Integrating science-based and local ecological knowledge: a case study of mangrove restoration and rehabilitation projects in the Philippines.

Mangrove forest is an ecosystem-based solution for disaster risk reduction in the Philippines, but its historical deforestation has hampered its capacity to protect coastal communities. With the increasing occurrence of storm surge in the Philippines, mangrove reforestation projects have received renewed attention, but many have failed. Community participation was deemed to be essential in those projects that did well. Hence, this paper examines successful mangrove restoration and rehabilitation projects in the Philippines to find out how community participation contributed to the accomplishme

From training to education: Understanding and responding to the resuscitation education issues with ideas and theory.

BACKGROUND: Alongside medical science, educational efficiency and local implementation have been identified as the three leading themes that influence cardiac arrest survival outcomes. Where the medical science domain continues to inform the contemporary evidence for the optimal practice, the remaining two education themes continue to face criticism linked to the poor sustainability of clinician resuscitation skills, with a rapid decay in abilities often evident soon after training and certification. The European Resuscitation Council recently reasserted the importance of programmes to reflect

Adolescents' Knowledge and Attitudes Towards NCDs: the Impact of a Novel Preventive School-Based Approach.

The relevance of addressing the burden of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) through school-based approaches targeting early-life risk factors is widely acknowledged, yet evidence on their large-scale implementation and effectiveness remains limited. Students aged 14-15 (n = 176) were surveyed for their knowledge, skills, and attitudes regarding NCDs. The questionnaire dealt with the cognitive, affective, and social influences on personal-level decisions. A two-arm quasi-experimental design with baseline and postmeasurement was employed; cases were exposed to a novel school-based approach develop

ABC's active ingredients: Parent coaches' in vivo feedback predicts maternal sensitivity among low-income predominantly Latina mothers.

Based on principles of implementation science and precision home visiting, this study tested parent coaches' in vivo feedback as a predictor of sensitive parenting behaviors in 91 low-income mothers of infants (infant Mage = 12.73 months, SD = 4.17). All participants lived in the United States. Most (87%) of the mothers identified as Latina. All participants had received Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up (ABC), an evidence-based program consisting of 10 home visits provided by a trained parent coach. The ABC program's principal fidelity criterion is a specific type of in vivo (real-time) f…

Impact of COVID-19 on Adolescent HIV Prevention and Treatment Research in the AHISA Network.

Members of the Adolescent HIV Prevention and Treatment Implementation Science Alliance (AHISA) network conduct research aiming to close gaps between what is known to be impactful across the HIV prevention and treatment cascade, and services delivered to optimize outcomes for adolescents/young adults (AYA) in high HIV-prevalence settings. The COVID-19 pandemic introduced new challenges which threaten to exacerbate care and access disparities. We report results of a survey among AHISA teams with active AYA HIV research programs in African countries to determine how the pandemic has impacted thei…

Commentary on Scaling-up Evidence-based Interventions in US Public Systems to Prevent Behavioral Health Problems.

As evidence-based interventions (EBIs) to prevent mental, emotional, and behavioral health problems continue to become available, approaches for implementation in systems and settings, at scale, are needed. The article, Scaling-up Evidence-based Interventions in U.S. Public Systems to Prevent Behavioral Health Problems: Challenges and Opportunities (Fagan et al. 2019) examines five large, complex public systems (behavioral health, child welfare, education, juvenile justice, and public health) that have adopted and implemented EBIs in various ways and presents common factors that support scale-

Preparing for the unexpected: the pivotal role of social and behavioral sciences in trials of biomedical HIV prevention interventions.

A range of efficacies have been reported for biomedical HIV prevention interventions, including antiretroviral treatment, male circumcision, preexposure prophylaxis, microbicides, and preventive vaccines. This range of efficacies probably results from the influence of multiple inputs and processes during trials, including the strength and target of the intervention, host factors, target population characteristics, level of HIV exposure, and intervention dose. Expertise in social and behavioral sciences, in conjunction with basic science, clinical research, epidemiology, biostatistics, and comm

Rationing by assumption: De-implementation of spinal injections requires rigorous comparative evidence.

Ballengee et al. propose an implementation science framework for de-implementing epidural steroid injections (ESIs) for chronic low back pain (CLBP). This commentary identifies several critical limitations of their proposal. First, the target population is inadequately defined; the term "non-specific" CLBP is never operationalized, inviting misapplication to patients with specific pathoanatomical diagnoses. Second, the evidentiary anchor, a recent BMJ clinical practice guideline, is subject to a formal retraction request from 34 professional organizations citing inappropriate pooling of hetero…

Effective, but underused: lessons learned implementing contingency management in real-world practice settings in the United States.

Despite being one of the most effective adjunctive behavioral interventions in combination with medication for opioid use disorder, contingency management (CM) is one of the least available interventions in opioid treatment programs. This paradoxical state of affairs is perhaps the greatest example of the research-to-practice gap in the behavioral health field. Implementation science, a discipline that aims to identify replicable methods that can be used across settings and populations to bridge the gap between research and practice, can potentially help. Based on our team's experience impleme…
