Perseveration and Suicide in Huntington's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease (HD) patients are at significantly higher risk of suicidal behavior, and associated cognitive and behavioral factors play an important role. Impulsivity is commonly thought to be a risk factor, but does not completely account for all suicide attempts. OBJECTIVE: To provide clinical evidence that perseverative behavior may precipitate suicide attempts in HD. METHODS: Case review of four HD patients who attempted suicide. RESULTS: Each patient demonstrated a clinical history of perseverative behavior, and endorsed perseveration on upsetting thoughts leading up

Shared predictors of youthful gambling, substance use, and delinquency.

Given that gambling, alcohol misuse, other drug use, and delinquency are correlated, it is hypothesized that these problem behaviors have shared antecedents. Measures from 3 explanatory domains--sociodemographic factors (age, race, and socioeconomic status), individual factors (impulsivity and moral disengagement), and socialization factors (parental monitoring and peer delinquency)--were tested for links to problem behaviors in 2 longitudinal samples of adolescents. Black youth had lower levels of problem behaviors than Whites. Impulsivity was a significant predictor of alcohol misuse for fem

Gender moderates the relationship between impulsivity and sexual risk-taking in a cocaine-using psychiatric outpatient population.

Adults who abuse substances are at increased risk for contracting sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. Within this population, sexual risk behaviors have been associated with increased impulsivity. Studies in non-clinical populations showing gender-related differences in sexual decision-making and casual sexual partnering suggest impulsivity has a greater influence on men than women, but these differences have not been documented in substance-using patients. In a sample of 89 adults with recent cocaine use and receiving outpatient psychiatric treatment, we tested the hypothesis that

The possible influence of impulsivity and dietary restraint on associations between serotonin genes and binge eating.

Although serotonin (5-HT) genes are thought to be involved in the etiology of bulimia nervosa and binge eating, findings from molecular genetic studies are inconclusive. This may be due to limitations of past research, such as a failure to consider the influence of quantitative traits and gene-environment interactions. The current study investigated these issues by examining whether quantitative traits (i.e., impulsivity) and environmental exposure factors (i.e., dietary restraint) moderate 5-HT gene/binge eating associations in a sample of young women (N = 344). Binge eating was assessed usin

Manic symptoms and impulsivity during bipolar depressive episodes.

OBJECTIVES: In contrast to the extensive literature on the frequent occurrence of depressive symptoms in manic patients, there is little information about manic symptoms in bipolar depressions. Impulsivity is a prominent component of the manic syndrome, so manic features during depressive syndromes may be associated with impulsivity and its consequences, including increased risk of substance abuse and suicidal behavior. Therefore, we investigated the prevalence of manic symptoms and their relationships to impulsivity and clinical characteristics in patients with bipolar depressive episodes. M

Effects of fluoxetine on aggressive behavior of adult inpatients with mental retardation and epilepsy.

Nineteen mentally retarded inpatients with epilepsy and a history of current or recent aggressive behavior were treated with 20 mg of fluoxetine daily. All were concurrently taking other psychotropic medications, including carbamazepine and neuroleptics. A standardized rating scale (MOAS) was used to assess the effects of fluoxetine on aggressive behavior. There were wide individual differences in drug response. In nine patients, fluoxetine treatment was associated with increased aggression, while drug withdrawal led to a decrease to below pretreatment levels. Two hypotheses concerning the app

Impulsivity and Compulsivity in Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Disorders: Clinical Implications for Treatment Sequencing.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and related disorders comprise a heterogeneous group of neuropsychiatric conditions characterized by intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors. While traditionally conceptualized as disorders of compulsivity, emerging evidence supports a dimensional model in which impulsivity represents a critical and interacting construct that influences clinical presentation, comorbidity patterns, and treatment response. This interaction is increasingly understood through dysfunction within cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical circuitry and associated large-scale brain netwo

Think twice: Impulsivity and decision making in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Recent studies have challenged the anxiety-avoidance model of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), linking OCD to impulsivity, risky-decision-making and reward-system dysfunction, which can also be found in addiction and might support the conceptualization of OCD as a behavioral addiction. Here, we conducted an exploratory investigation of the behavioral addiction model of OCD by assessing whether OCD patients are more impulsive, have impaired decision-making, and biased probabilistic reasoning, three core dimensions of addiction, in a sample of OCD patients and healthy co

Problematic social media use and inhibitory control among post-secondary students.

INTRODUCTION: Problematic social media use (PSMU) parallels traditional characteristics of substance use disorders, including salience, functional impairment, and tolerance. An excessive focus on social reward and engaging in negative behaviors on social media may decrease certain executive functions. However, the role of how inhibitory control processes manifest in PSMU are not well understood. The current study aims to explore both the presence of inhibitory control impairments and harmful online behaviors, such as negative social comparison, in problematic social media use. METHODS: A popu

Sociodemographic differences in youth alcohol sipping's nomological network.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has established that certain features of personality (e.g., impulsivity), psychopathology (e.g., impulsivity, mood disorder, thought disorder), and contextual factors (e.g., parenting, parental alcohol use) are associated with an increased likelihood of having sipped alcohol in youth, and substance involvement and problems in adolescence and adulthood. What is less clear from the existing literature is whether well-established risk factors of substance use are consistent across sociodemographic characteristics (i.e., gender, race/ethnicity, religious affiliation,

Sex differences in the relationship between white matter microstructure and impulsivity in adolescents.

Rapid maturational brain changes occur during adolescence--a time associated with risk-taking behaviors and improvements in cognition. The present study examined the relationship between white matter (WM) microstructure, impulsive behavior and response inhibition in female and male adolescents. Twenty-one healthy adolescents underwent diffusion tensor imaging using a 3.0-T magnetic resonance imaging system. Impulse control was assessed using the Bar-On Emotional Quotient Inventory, Youth Version. Response inhibition was assessed using the Stroop Color-Word Interference Test. Fractional anisotr…

Neural correlates of risky decision making in Parkinson's disease patients with impulse control disorders.

Some patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) experience impulse control disorders (ICDs), characterized by deficient voluntary control over impulses, drives, or temptations regarding excessive hedonic behavior. The present study aimed to better understand the neural basis of impulsive, risky decision making in PD patients with ICDs by disentangling potential dysfunctions in decision and outcome mechanisms. We collected fMRI data from 20 patients with ICDs and 28 without ICDs performing an information gathering task. Patients viewed sequences of bead colors drawn from hidden urns and were instru

The value of impulsivity to define subgroups of addicted individuals differing in personality dysfunction, craving, psychosocial adjustment, and wellbeing: a latent class analysis.

High impulsivity is common to substance and gambling addictions. Despite these commonalities, there is still substantial heterogeneity on impulsivity levels within these diagnostic groups, and variations in impulsive levels predict higher severity of symptoms and poorer outcomes. We addressed the question of whether impulsivity scores can yield empirically driven subgroups of addicted individuals that will exhibit different clinical presentations and outcomes. We applied latent class analysis (LCA) to trait (UPPS-P impulsive behavior scale) and cognitive impulsivity (Stroop and d2 tests) score…

Patterns of change in impulsivity after bariatric surgery: evidence from 24 months of follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic and bariatric surgery is the most effective obesity treatment, and it has been demonstrated that an individual’s preoperative impulsivity can modulate the effects of MBS. However, it remains unclear whether MBS subsequently alters impulsive personality traits and impulsive decision-making. METHODS: A total of 66 MBS candidates were followed for 24 months after surgery. Impulsive decision-making and impulsive personality were assessed using the Delay Discounting Task and the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, respectively. A mixed linear model incorporating anxiety and depressio

Effects of antisocial or social attitudes on neurobiological functions.

Antisocial personality disorder is characterized by triats like a failure to conform to social norms, impulsivity, hostility, irritability and aggressiveness, recklessness, irresponsibility, criminality, a lack of guilt or remorse, and deceitfulness. A large number of investigations revealed that there is evidence for a neurobiological underpinning of antisocial behavior. The precise nature and causal aspects of the relationship between neurobiological abnormalities and antisocial behavior is still unknown. There is, however, some evidence that some antisocial patients are able to influence th

[Impulse control in addiction: a translational perspective].

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is a hallmark of addiction and predicts treatment response and relapse. Impulsivity is, however, a complex construct. Translational cross-species research is needed to give us greater insight into the neurobiology and the role of impulsivity in addiction and to help with the development of new treatment strategies for improving patients' impulse control. AIM: To review recent evidence concerning the concept of impulsivity and the role of impulsivity in addiction. METHOD: The concept and neurobiology of impulsivity are reviewed from a translational perspective. The rol
