AIM AND OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of massage, sucrose solution, herbal tea or hydrolysed formula, each used individually in the treatment of infantile colic.
BACKGROUND: The term colic describes a group of symptoms that occur frequently in infants, consisting of paroxysmal abdominal pain and severe crying. Infant colic is of importance for both parents and the community health services that provide families with care, and is therefore an important clinical problem that is amenable to nursing interventions.
DESIGN: This prospective and randomised-contro

Orally administered caffeine and dextromethorphan (DM) were used as pharmacologic probes to determine the effect of infant diet on acquisition of cytochrome P-450 (CYP) enzyme activity during the first 6 mo of life. The caffeine elimination rate constant (ke) was determined from serum, and concentrations of caffeine, DM, and their respective metabolites were measured in urine by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Caffeine ke was low at 2 wk and displayed a significant positive linear correlation with age (p < 0.001); increasing faster in formula-fed than in breast-fed infants (p <

The term "artificial feeding" includes a) the various infant formulas (including homemade formulas) substituting or supplementing mother's milk; b) the so-called "Beikost", i.e. minor additions to mothers milk or formula, such as fruit juices, fruit, meat and eggs; c) solid foods replacing part of the liquid food after a few weeks or months (weaning food). The use of these preparations in no- or partially-breastfed infants was studied and correlated with various socioeconomic parameters. The most striking observations were (1) during the first three months a decline in homemade formulas in fav…

We report a 9-month-old male Latino infant with congenital nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI) who presented with hypernatremic dehydration aggravated by severe gastroenteritis. Initially, the infant was managed with intravenous fluids followed by standard 20 cal/ounce formula and pharmacological therapy, resulting in normalization of his serum sodium level. While hydrochlorothiazide therapy alone or in combination with prostaglandin inhibitors or amiloride has been successful in children and adolescents, this is the first report of the successful use of hydrochlorothiazide and amiloride in a

BACKGROUND: Cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) is the most common food allergy in infants, with significant clinical, nutritional, and economic consequences. In Jordan, the Ministry of Health (MoH) provides specialized formulas for affected infants; however, local data on clinical presentation, treatment duration, costs, and breastfeeding barriers are scarce.
AIM: To evaluate the clinical manifestations and outcomes of infants diagnosed with CMPA in a public hospital in Jordan and to assess treatment costs and maternal breastfeeding barriers.
METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study

Arachidonic acid (ARA) is an essential long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid for infant growth and development, commonly added to infant formula and supplementary foods as ARA oil or ARA powder. Since December 2025, infant formula products have been recalled in several countries due to cereulide contamination in ARA ingredients. Cereulide, a heat-resistant emetic toxin produced by Bacillus cereus, presents a serious threat to infant health. However, specific analytical methods for cereulide detection in ARA raw materials remain scarce, hindering effective quality control and source prevention …

Between 1975 and 1990, a total of 34 patients with water intoxication were treated at St Louis (Mo) Children's Hospital, 24 of these in the last 3 years, indicating a marked increase in incidence of this previously rare condition. Thirty-one were infants living in poverty who ingested excessive amounts of water offered at home by their caretakers. Exhaustion of the supply of infant formula was the most common reason given for this substitution. Infants were treated by a single infusion of hypertonic saline or a slow infusion of isotonic saline. Central pontine myelinolysis was not observed as …

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The double-blind randomized European Childhood Obesity Project (CHOP) demonstrated that reduced protein content in infant formula leads to a lower body mass index (BMI) up to six years of age. Here we aimed at assessing pre-peritoneal fat, a marker of visceral fat, in children participating in the CHOP trial.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Healthy term formula-fed infants in five European countries were randomized either to higher (n = 550) or lower (n = 540) protein formulas in the first year of life. Infants who were exclusively breastfed for at least three months (n = 588) were …

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Infant feeding affects child growth and later obesity risk. We examined whether protein supply in infancy affects the adiposity rebound, body mass index (BMI) and overweight and obesity up to 11 years of age.
METHODS: We enrolled healthy term infants from five European countries in a double blind randomized trial, with anticipated 16 examinations within 11 years follow-up. Formula-fed infants (n = 1090) were randomized to isoenergetic formula with higher or lower protein content within the range stipulated by EU legislation in 2001. A breastfed reference group (n =

BACKGROUND: Early feeding with cow's milk (CM) may increase the risk of cow's milk allergy (CMA).
OBJECTIVE: We sought to examine prospectively whether supplementary feeding of CM at the maternity hospital would increase the risk when compared with feeding with pasteurized human milk or hydrolyzed formula.
METHODS: We studied 6209 unselected healthy, full-term infants, of whom 5385 (87%) required supplementary milk while in the hospital. The infants were randomly assigned to receive CM formula (1789 infants), pasteurized human milk (1859 infants), or whey hydrolysate formula (1737 infants).

The use of acidified milk for feeding infants has a long, interesting history that appears to have developed from the use of buttermilk in Holland as early as the late 19th century for feeding infants with diarrhea. Physicians in the early 20th century assumed that the observed benefits were from buttermilk's acidity leading to the practice of acidifying infant formula. The historical and physiological perspective on the use of acidified infant formula is now especially relevant with the emergence of an acidified liquid human milk fortifier for preterm infants. Here, we review that history, wi…

BACKGROUND: Infants born small for gestational age (SGA) are at risk for impaired growth and metabolic complications. However, the long-term effects of early feeding type on catch-up growth (CUG) in SGA infants remain controversial, and there have been no established anthropometric thresholds to predict later CUG.
METHODS: This population-based study analyzed full-term SGA infants (birth weight <3rd percentile) from the Korean National Health Screening Program (2007-2014). Feeding type was classified as exclusively breastfeeding or exclusively formula-feeding based on consistent parent-report

The full-term infants born during the leap year of 1988 in the obstetric-gynecological complex in the town of Dobrich were 2434, but the infants born according to the formula of Negele within the defined term--14 days were 2038. Most women were delivered of infants before the term. Standardization of parturients before and after term is made after estimated term with addition of 5 days to the last menses as the number of deliveries is increased as well. The difference in weight and length of infants before and on term is significant in respect to the infants born on term (with few exceptions)

Four hundred sixty-four fetuses underwent real time ultrasound examination within 72 hours before birth to evaluate other factors than the weight formula itself that might influence the accuracy of ultrasound weight estimation. The results indicated that fetal sex had no effect on weight estimation accuracy, but that fetal growth patterns, cephalic index, and the amount of amniotic fluid did. The weights of small-for-gestational age infants were significantly overestimated. Infants with oligohydramnios and low cephalic indexes were significantly underestimated by the ultrasonic weight formula.

BACKGROUND: Breast feeding rates in England at 3months of age are approximately 17% for exclusive breast-feeding and 55% for breast-feeds supplemented with formula. Tongue-tie (TT) in infants is cited as a significant cause of difficulty with maintaining breast-feeding. Early treatment and support can improve breast-feeding and allow infants to benefit from the many long-term benefits of breast-feeding. Our aim was to determine BF rates in infants 3months after attending our tongue-tie clinic (TTC).
METHODS: Institutional ethical approval and study approval were obtained. Patients attending t

Despite abundant research comparing postdischarge hospital diets for preterm infants, the ideal clinical approach has not been determined. Dilemmas persist because randomized controlled trials of preterm versus term infant formula have yielded equivocal results and because the predominant postdischarge diet for preterm infants has shifted from formula-based to a combination that includes maternal milk and increasingly includes a plan for breastfeeding. As the investigation of the influence of the post-hospital discharge diet on preterm infant outcomes evolves, factors to consider include the i…

The delivery of a preterm baby is a nutrition emergency. Growth and the accumulation of nutrient reserves are higher during the third trimester of pregnancy than at any other time during the life cycle. Enteral nutrition is the preferred mode of support and human milk the preferred source of enteral nutrition. Human milk is highly digestible and contains many anti-infective components, which confer a lower risk of infection. The mother of a preterm infant requires education, equipment, and encouragement to successfully initiate and sustain lactation. Human milk requires nutrient fortification

BACKGROUND: Breast milk is widely regarded as the optimal nourishment for infants. However, due to physiological or psychosocial factors, many infants do not receive adequate breastfeeding. So, the formula milk is proposed as a substitute of breast milk, and an increasing number of infants are being formula-fed. Numerous studies have highlighted the difference between breast and formula feeding, but the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Given the ethical constraints in conducting experimental studies on human breastfeeding, we employed pig, which have similar physiological structure with h
