Coordination deficits in ideomotor apraxia during visually targeted reaching reflect impaired visuomotor transformations.

Ideomotor limb apraxia, commonly defined as a disorder of skilled, purposeful movement, is characterized by spatiotemporal deficits during a variety of actions. These deficits have been attributed to damage to, or impaired retrieval of, stored representations of learned actions, especially object-related movements. However, such deficits might also arise from impaired visuomotor transformation mechanisms that operate in parallel to or downstream from mechanisms for storage of action representations. These transformation processes convert extrinsic visual information into intrinsic neural comma

A Critical Review of Risk Assessment Models for Listeria monocytogenes in Dairy Products.

A review of the published quantitative risk assessment (QRA) models of L. monocytogenes in dairy products was undertaken in order to identify and appraise the relative effectiveness of control measures and intervention strategies implemented at primary production, processing, retail, and consumer practices. A systematic literature search retrieved 18 QRA models, most of them (9) investigated raw and pasteurized milk cheeses, with the majority covering long supply chains (4 farm-to-table and 3 processing-to-table scopes). On-farm contamination sources, either from shedding animals or from the b

Retrograde Amnesia - A Question of Disturbed Calcium Levels?

Retrograde amnesia is the inability to remember events or information. The successful acquisition and memory of information is required before retrograde amnesia may occur. Often, the trigger for retrograde amnesia is a traumatic event. Loss of memories may be caused in two ways: either by loss/erasure of the memory itself or by the inability to access the memory, which is still present. In general, memories and learning are associated with a positive connotation although the extinction of unpleasant experiences and memories of traumatic events may be highly welcome. In contrast to the many ex

Minimal access to male fertility prices online: an analysis of the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART) clinics.

BACKGROUND: Though insurance coverage is evolving for male infertility services, most patients continue to pay out of pocket. These costs such as semen analysis and intracytoplasmic sperm injection preparation may affect the utilization of those services. We sought to determine online price transparency specifically for male infertility services on the websites of in-vitro fertilization (IVF) clinics in the US. METHODS: In this cross-sectional analysis, pricing data was acquired from each clinic on the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART) website as of July 2019. Each website w

Risk of disruptive behavioural disorders in offspring of mothers with perinatal depressive disorders: A data linkage cohort study.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to examine the relationship between maternal antenatal and postnatal depressive disorders and the risk of disruptive behavioural disorders (DBDs) in offspring, including conduct disorder (CD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). METHODS: We utilised a large administrative health dataset from New South Wales (NSW), Australia. Maternal perinatal depressive disorders and offspring DBDs were identified using International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) codes. Generalised linear models with a binomial distribution and log link function were applied to estimate

Geospatial mapping and data linkage uncovers variability in outcomes of foot disease according to multiple deprivation: a population cohort study of people with diabetes.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Our aim was to investigate the geospatial distribution of diabetic foot ulceration (DFU), lower extremity amputation (LEA) and mortality rates in people with diabetes in small geographical areas with varying levels of multiple deprivation. METHODS: We undertook a population cohort study to extract the health records of 112,231 people with diabetes from the Scottish Care Information - Diabetes Collaboration (SCI-Diabetes) database. We linked this to health records to identify death, LEA and DFU events. These events were geospatially mapped using multiple deprivation maps for t

Risk and protective factors for offending among UK Armed Forces personnel after they leave service: a data linkage study.

BACKGROUND: A proportion of ex-military personnel who develop mental health and social problems end up in the Criminal Justice System. A government review called for better understanding of pathways to offending among ex-military personnel to improve services and reduce reoffending. We utilised data linkage with criminal records to examine the patterns of offending among military personnel after they leave service and the associated risk (including mental health and alcohol problems) and socio-economic protective factors. METHOD: Questionnaire data from a cohort study of 13 856 randomly selec

Birth weight and risk of paediatric Hodgkin lymphoma: Findings from a population-based record linkage study in California.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between birth weight (along with a variety of pre and perinatal characteristics) and the risk of paediatric Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) diagnosed at age <20 years. METHOD: We linked California statewide birth records from 1978-2009 and cancer diagnosis data from 1988-2011 to conduct a population-based case-control study with 1216 cases and 4485 controls (matched on birth month and year, sex, and race/ethnicity). Conditional logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) of paediatric HL overall and by age of di

Metformin Improves Survival in Patients with Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma and Pre-Existing Diabetes: A Propensity Score Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) remains a highly lethal disease. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is both a risk factor for and a sequela of PDAC. Metformin is a commonly prescribed biguanide oral hypoglycemic used for the treatment of type II DM. We investigated whether metformin use before PDAC diagnosis affected survival of patients with DM, controlling confounders such as diabetic severity. METHODS: We used the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results registry (SEER)-Medicare linked database to identify patients with PDAC diagnosed between 2007 and 2011. The diabetic TO comor

The impact of first birth obstetric anal sphincter injury on the subsequent birth: a population-based linkage study.

BACKGROUND: With rising obstetric anal sphincter injury (OASI) rates, the number of women at risk of OASI recurrence is in turn increasing. Decisions regarding mode of subsequent birth following an OASI are complex, and depend on a variety of factors. We sought to identify the risk factors for OASI recurrence from first and subsequent births, and to investigate the effect of OASI birth factors on planned caesarean for the second birth. METHODS: Using two linked population datasets from New South Wales, Australia, we selected women giving birth between 2001 and 2011 with a first birth OASI and

Identifying clinical/translational research cohorts: ascertainment via querying an integrated multi-source database.

BACKGROUND: Ascertainment of potential subjects has been a longstanding problem in clinical research. Various methods have been proposed, including using data in electronic health records. However, these methods typically suffer from scaling effects-some methods work well for large cohorts; others work for small cohorts only. OBJECTIVE: We propose a method that provides a simple identification of pre-research cohorts and relies on data available in most states in the USA: merged public health data sources. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Utah Population Database Limited query tool allows users to

Generalized tensor-based morphometry of HIV/AIDS using multivariate statistics on deformation tensors.

This paper investigates the performance of a new multivariate method for tensor-based morphometry (TBM). Statistics on Riemannian manifolds are developed that exploit the full information in deformation tensor fields. In TBM, multiple brain images are warped to a common neuroanatomical template via 3-D nonlinear registration; the resulting deformation fields are analyzed statistically to identify group differences in anatomy. Rather than study the Jacobian determinant (volume expansion factor) of these deformations, as is common, we retain the full deformation tensors and apply a manifold vers

Removal of bone in CT angiography of the cervical arteries by piecewise matched mask bone elimination.

In maximum intensity projection (MIP) images of CT angiography (CTA) scans, the arteries are often obscured by bone. A bone removal method is presented that uses an additional, nonenhanced scan to create a mask of the bone by thresholding and dilation. After registration of the CTA scan and the additional scan, the bone in the CTA scan is masked. As the cervical area contains bones that can move with respect to each other, these bones are separated first using a watershed algorithm, and then registered individually. A phantom study was performed to evaluate and quantify the tradeoff between th

StUdy of Gestational diabetes And Risk using Electronic Data (SUGARED): a population-based cohort study-study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in Australia has tripled in the last 20 years. Consequently, over 40 000 pregnancies are now diagnosed as 'higher risk' each year. This has increased antenatal surveillance and obstetric intervention, often in the form of delivery earlier than 39 weeks gestation. The StUdy of Gestational diabetes And Risk using Electronic Data (SUGARED) project aims to use large population-based and routinely collected linked health data to (1) personalise risk prediction of adverse pregnancy outcomes for women undergoing glucose tolerance test

Combining disparate data sources for improved poverty prediction and mapping.

More than 330 million people are still living in extreme poverty in Africa. Timely, accurate, and spatially fine-grained baseline data are essential to determining policy in favor of reducing poverty. The potential of "Big Data" to estimate socioeconomic factors in Africa has been proven. However, most current studies are limited to using a single data source. We propose a computational framework to accurately predict the Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) at a finest spatial granularity and coverage of 552 communes in Senegal using environmental data (related to food security, econom

Lessons in Medical Record Abstraction from the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian (PLCO) National Screening Trial.

The most rigorous and accurate approach to evaluating clinical events in cancer screening studies is to use data obtained through medical record abstraction (MRA). Although MRA is complex, the particulars of the procedure-such as the specific training and quality assurance processes, challenges of implementation, and other factors that influence the quality of abstraction--are usually not described in reports of studies that employed the technique. In this paper, we present the details of MRA activities used in the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial, which us
