An Innovative Injectable and Retrievable Drug Delivery System for Endodontic Therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Endodontic treatment failures remain a significant treatment challenge. Different bacterial combinations are implicated in posttreatment disease. Enterococcus faecalis is often detected in these biofilms. Calcium hydroxide has many limitations, including low flowability, difficult retrieval, high pH, and limited efficacy against E. faecalis. Here, we show that these difficulties can be overcome using calcium salicylate (CASA) encapsulated in a photocrosslinked thermoreversible F127-dimethacrylamide (DMA) hydrogel. METHODS: CASA was prepared by mixing calcium hydroxide and salicy

Appropriate flame-spraying treatment exacerbates thermal oxidative degradation of residual polyethylene films.

In dryland farming, plastic film mulching can significantly increase crop yields, but the resulting residues impair soil health. Heretofore, only few studies had examined how heat treatment facilitates the rapid degradation of polyethylene (PE) residual films. Herein, we characterized the variations in micro-morphology, functional groups, and crystallinity of PE residual films after moderate heat exposure using a self-made flame-spraying equipment. The results revealed that solid residues (SR) obtained from flame-spraying showed a gravimetric weight loss of 9.39 %-15.35 % compared with untreat

A comparative study of the surface structure, acidity, and catalytic performance of tungstated zirconia prepared from crystalline zirconia or amorphous zirconium oxyhydroxide.

Tungstated zirconias prepared from W deposition on zirconium oxyhydroxide are reportedly active for alkane isomerization, whereas solids synthesized by impregnation of zirconia are inactive. The origin of the differences between the two preparations is not fully understood. The present paper examines the influence of W surface density and the nature of the support on the surface structure, development of the acidity, and catalytic performance of WO(x)()/ ZrO(2) catalysts. Two series of catalysts containing W surface densities up to 5.2 at. W/nm(2) were prepared by pore volume impregnation of t

Design and Implementation of an Eyewear-Integrated Infrared Eye-Tracking System.

Eye-tracking is a key enabling technology for smart eyewear, supporting hands-free interaction, accessibility, and context-aware human-machine interfaces under strict constraints on size, power consumption, and computational complexity. While camera-based solutions provide high accuracy, their integration into lightweight and low-power wearable platforms remains challenging. This paper is a feasibility study for the design, simulation, and experimental evaluation of a photosensor oculography (PSOG) eye-tracking system that is fully integrated into an eyewear frame, based on near-infrared (NIR)

Long-wave infrared imaging for respiratory rate measurement in a patient with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: A case report.

Respiratory monitoring is important in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients as progressive respiratory muscle weakness often leads to respiratory failure. We performed single-case feasibility evaluation of long-wave infrared imaging for noncontact respiratory rate estimation in a hospitalized amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patient and compared it with red-green-blue camera-based optical flow analysis and electrocardiogram-derived respiration. Respiratory rate was assessed using four methods: (a) manual counting as the ground truth; (b) long-wave infrared; (c) red-green-blue; and (d) single-le

A transpupillary approach for crosslinking Guinea pig sclera using WST11 and near-infrared light.

Crosslinking strengthens the sclera and holds potential as a treatment for myopia. This study aims to identify optimal crosslinking parameters in guinea pigs using WST11 with dextran followed by near-infrared (NIR) illumination. Guinea pig eyes were incubated in WST11 with 2, 5 or 10% dextran, and penetration depth was assessed by fluorescence microscopy. Crosslinking efficacy was measured as thermal stability using a thermal degradation assay, following incubation in WST11 + 10% dextran (WST-D) for 30 min and NIR irradiation at 10 mW/cm2 or 20 mW/cm2 for 10, 20 and 30 min. The optimized param

Non-contact detection of post-regurgitation deep inhalation in calves using infrared thermography and deep learning-based nostril segmentation.

Continuous monitoring of rumination is highly informative for assessing cattle health and welfare. Traditional methods for rumination detection, such as pressure sensors, accelerometers, and acoustic sensors, require direct attachment to animals, which can be costly and stressful for the animals. This study proposes a non-contact approach for characterizing post-regurgitation deep inhalation (PRDI) in calves using infrared thermography and deep learning-based nostril segmentation. Synchronized RGB and temperature data were collected from 8 calves across 28 imaging sessions, during which rumina

Wavelet-Based Spectral Feature Gating for Near-Infrared Remote Photoplethysmography Estimation.

Near-infrared (NIR) video-based remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) enables physiological measurement under low-light conditions using monochrome facial videos. NIR videos lack chrominance-based cues, while weak cardiac variations remain entangled with motion, illumination, and imaging noise. To address these limitations, we propose a wavelet-based spectral feature gating (WSFG) module for NIR-based rPPG estimation. The WSFG module applies a two-level stationary wavelet transform (SWT) to decompose intermediate temporal features without temporal downsampling. Specifically, learnable spectral ga

Comparative evaluation of thermography, infrared, mercury, digital, and ecological thermometers for body temperature measurements in cattle.

Following the global ban on mercury thermometers due to their toxicological risks, alternative devices such as digital, ecological (galinstan-based), and infrared thermometers, as well as infrared thermography, have emerged for veterinary use. This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy and agreement of these alternatives compared to the mercury thermometer for measuring body temperature in cattle. Twenty-four clinically healthy or stable cattle were monitored twice daily over five consecutive days. Rectal temperatures were recorded using mercury, digital, and ecological thermometers. Infrared t

Tuning Photophysical Conflict Into Synergy: Stereoelectronic Planarity Disruption Unlocks Concurrent Aggregation-Enhanced ROS and NIR-II Fluorescence.

The development of near-infrared-II (NIR-II) fluorescent photosensitizers is fundamentally limited by a photophysical trade-off: aggregation-caused quenching that typically suppresses both reactive oxygen species (ROS) and fluorescence. Herein, we introduce a paradigm-shifting strategy-stereoelectronic planarity disruption of molecular planarity-to transform this detrimental trade-off into a synergistic, aggregation-enhanced process. By integrating sterically demanding and electronically communicative peripheries into an acceptor-donor-acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-DA'D-A) scaffold, we designed s

Selective Near-Infrared Fluorescent Chemosensors for Human Carboxylesterase 1 Activity.

Carboxylesterase 1 (CES1) is an enzyme that is crucial for drug metabolism by hydrolyzing a range of ester- and amide-containing drugs, which, in turn, influences drug efficacy and safety. Accurate monitoring of CES1 activity bears importance for the clinical setting, providing invaluable guidance in the utilization of numerous drugs that undergo metabolism by CES1. An approach to achieve monitoring involves designing near-infrared (NIR) probes, which also have the advantages of reducing autofluorescence, enhancing sensitivity, and allowing noninvasive imaging of molecular processes in biologi

Reduced adverse effects of infrared free electron laser-irradiated insulin amyloid in vitro and in mice.

Insulin is a hormone that physiologically contributes to the control of glucose metabolism and therefore insulin self-injection has been one of the highly effective therapeutic approaches for diabetes. However, repeated injection of insulin preparations into the same site induces the formation of insulin amyloid. The amyloid adheres to native insulin, reduces the absorption of native insulin into blood vessels and eventually leads to high blood glucose levels. However, less-invasive radical treatments have not been explored. In this study, we examined whether free electron laser (FEL) irradiat

Synthesis of PbS/CdS/ZnS Core/Shell/Shell Quantum Dots for Multiplexed Shortwave Infrared Imaging.

This chapter describes a systematic approach for synthesizing high-quality lead sulfide/cadmium sulfide/zinc sulfide (PbS/CdS/ZnS) core/shell/shell quantum dots (QDs) with tunable emission in the shortwave infrared (SWIR) wavelength range (1000-1700 nm). This protocol details the synthesis of three distinct QD formulations with emission peaks at approximately 1150, 1250, and 1515 nm, enabling multiplexed in vivo imaging applications. The synthetic route involves three key steps: (1) size-controlled synthesis of PbS cores through hot injection precipitation, (2) formation of a CdS shell through

Infrared thermography in the detection of arthritis: a systematic review of diagnostic performance compared with joint ultrasound.

Early detection of arthritis in autoimmune rheumatic diseases (ARDs) is critical to prevent irreversible damage. Joint ultrasound (US) offers high sensitivity and availability in a routine clinical practice. However, US is limited by examiner dependency and resource requirements. Infrared thermography (IRT) is a non-invasive, radiation-free method to examine surface temperature alterations linked to arthritis. Although promising, its diagnostic performance relative to joint US remains incompletely defined. The aim of this review was to examine the literature on IRT and its relationship to join

Effects of infrared assisted refractance window drying on physicochemical and quality attributes and thermodynamic analysis of thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.).

In this research, the process of drying thyme with Infrared- assisted Refractance Window (IR-RW) method was investigated as a new technology. The effect of water temperature (WT) and weight of samples (SW) on kinetics, energy, thermodynamic properties, qualitative characteristics, bioactive and essential oil were determined and optimized. Based on the response surface method (RSM-CCD), WT (70-90 °C) and SW (60-120 g) to achieve the best drying time, energy consumption (SEC), color (ΔE), bioactive properties and essential oil efficiency (EO) were optimized. The results showed that Midilli’s mod

Multispectral infrared-to-full-color upconversion expanding human vision.

The human visual system is inherently blind to infrared radiation due to the insufficient energy of infrared photons to trigger the photoisomerization of the retinal chromophore, resulting in the loss of over half of the solar spectrum. Here, we report a colloidal quantum dot (CQD)-based infrared-to-visible upconverter that enables ultrasensitive upconversion of multispectral infrared light radiation as full-color visible vision. The photon-energy-selective excitonic transitions in quantum-confined states and the photon flux, respectively, enable infrared wavelength- and intensity-dependent nu

Exploring the effect of red and near-infrared light on neurodegenerative disease: A focus on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Charcot's devastating disease of the motor system.

All neurodegenerative diseases, from Alzheimer's disease to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), are characterised by a relentless and progressive degeneration of neurones. The degenerating neurones suffer from mitochondrial dysfunction, glutamate excitotoxicity, metabolic disorder and atypical protein aggregations; there is also widespread neuroinflammation and damage to the neurovascular unit across the nervous system. Unfortunately, there is no current treatment option that addresses all, if not many, of these striking abnormalities, one that stops or even slows the progression of the disea

Near-Infrared Nanothermometer Reveals Temperature Discrepancy between Organs and Body Surface for Heatstroke Prevention.

Organ temperatures often vary significantly from body surface temperatures during heatstroke, leading to acute organ failure, although body temperature is continuously controlled. However, the exact temperature discrepancy between them remains unclear due to a lack of noninvasive techniques for real-time monitoring of organ temperature fluctuations. Herein, we developed a near-infrared emissive nanothermometer by codoping Nd3+ and Yb3+ to produce two distinct emissions at 980 and 1330 nm under 808 nm excitation. These emissions demonstrated differential responses to temperature variations, ena

Full-Spectrum phototherapy in hair loss management: a systematic review of wavelength-dependent mechanisms, clinical efficacy, and future directions.

Alopecia is a complex condition with profound social and psychological implications, creating an urgent need for safe and effective therapeutic interventions. This review introduces a novel "Wavelength-Penetration Depth-Targeting Mechanism" model to clarify the multi-level regulatory effects of full-spectrum phototherapy (spanning from ultraviolet to mid-infrared wavelengths) on hair follicle regeneration. Unlike traditional treatments such as drugs and surgery, phototherapy provides non-invasive, wavelength-specific modulation of key pathways. Specifically, UVB/UVA selectively induce apoptosi
