Immune regulation of osteoclast function in postmenopausal osteoporosis: a critical interdisciplinary perspective.

Extensive studies on cross talk between immune and skeletal systems in autoimmune diseases give rise to a new discipline of 'osteoimmunology', which explores the molecular regulation of osteoclasts by immune system. Postmenopausal osteoporosis is recognized as a cytokine driven disease, but the mechanism that how estrogen deficiency interplaying with cytokines to stimulate bone loss remains to be elucidated. Although the effect of individual cytokines on osteoclast formation is well characterized, the major challenge is to fit a multitude of redundant pathways and cytokines into a systemic mod

Contribution of toxicologic pathologists for the safety of human health in biomedical research-past, present, and future of the JSTP.

The research field of "Toxicologic Pathology" evaluates potentially toxic chemical exposures and chemically mediated illnesses in humans and experimental animals. Comparative studies of chemical exposures between model organisms and humans are essential for the risk assessment of chemicals and human health. Here we review the development and activities of the Japanese Society of Toxicologic Pathology (JSTP) during its 37-year history. Toxicological pathology studies provide many interesting and valuable findings. Rodent cancer bioassay data demonstrate the importance of dose levels, times, and

Frailty Identification and Care Pathway: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Care for Older Trauma Patients.

BACKGROUND: Frailty is a well-established marker of poor outcomes in geriatric trauma patients. There are few interventions to improve outcomes in this growing population. Our goal was to determine if an interdisciplinary care pathway for frail trauma patients improved in-hospital mortality, complications, and 30-day readmissions. STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study of frail patients ≥65 years old, admitted to the trauma service at an academic, urban level I trauma center between 2015 and 2017. Patients transferred to other services and those who died within the first 24 hours

The role of polysubstance use in the development, maintenance, and treatment of stimulant use disorders.

Stimulant use disorders represent a significant public health challenge, with no U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) pharmacotherapies currently available. A growing concern is that stimulant use rarely occurs in isolation. Instead, it often involves sequential or simultaneous use of multiple substances. This review explores the mechanistic, epidemiological, clinical, and preclinical dimensions of polysubstance use involving stimulants, particularly cocaine and methamphetamine. Key gaps in the existing literature are identified to underscore the critical need for polysubstance use research

Hormones, culture and puberty: How clinicians (don't) see gender in persistent pediatric pain.

Medical literature suggests that girls are affected by persistent pain disproportionately to boys especially following the onset of puberty. This article turns attention to how clinicians treating pediatric pain patients conceptualize the role of sex/gender in persistent pain and its care. Drawing on in-depth interviews with members of interdisciplinary pediatric pain care teams in Finland, we argue that sex/gender is an elusive object of alternating in/attention in pain care. We show that clinicians diverge in their views on the degree to which sex/gender matters in pediatric pain, and often

Defining the quality of interdisciplinary care for patients with brain metastases: modified Delphi panel recommendations.

The value of interdisciplinary teams in improving outcomes and quality of care of patients with brain metastases remains uncertain, partly due to the lack of consensus on key indicators to evaluate interprofessional care. We aimed to obtain expert consensus across disciplines on indicators that evaluate the quality and value of brain metastases care. A steering committee of key opinion leaders curated relevant outcomes and process indicators from a literature review and a stakeholder needs assessment, and an international panel of physicians rated the outcomes and process indicators using a mo

Advances in research on dental occlusion and brain function: neuroimaging correlates and molecular mechanisms.

The relationship between dental occlusion and brain function is bidirectional, involving neuroanatomical, neurophysiological, and clinical disorders. Occlusal sensory input modulates sensorimotor control, cognitive functions, and emotional states via neural pathways, while aberrant brain function can conversely disrupt occlusion homeostasis. This review synthesizes recent progress in deciphering the bidirectional interactions between dental occlusion and brain function, with a focus on the impacts of occlusion on brain structure and function, the underpinning molecular and physiological mechan

Complementary therapies: What are we talking about?

Complementary therapies are used by cancer patients at every stage of treatment. Denying this reality would mean denying our patients' quest for well-being and autonomy. It would also mean ignoring the satisfaction they derive from them. There is a need for clarification on the definitions of the terms used, as well as on regulations and practitioner training. Developing clinical studies of good methodological quality that are adapted to practice is essential to providing scientific proof of efficacy and safety (qualitative and quantitative evaluations). Integrating complementary therapies wit

Perioperative management of uncorrected tetralogy of Fallot presenting for emergent noncardiac surgery: A case report.

With only about 3% of patients with uncorrected tetralogy of Fallot surviving past age 40, we describe the case of an uncorrected tetralogy of Fallot following a palliative, now obstructed, Blalock-Taussig shunt in a man who presented for emergent noncardiac surgery. Due to limited in-house records, managing this complex patient presentation required obtaining outside-hospital records, performing point-of-care diagnostic studies, and coordinating with the surgical team. We employed monitored anesthesia care with the option to convert to general anesthesia if needed. The patient was discharged

[Vertebral body metastases : From the clarification of back pain to the treatment decision].

Vertebral body metastases represent one of the most frequent manifestations of skeletal tumor dissemination and must be considered in the differential diagnosis of unexplained back pain, particularly in patients with a known history of oncological diseases. The associated morbidity, including spinal instability, deformity, pathological fractures and severe pain, is substantial. Healthcare professionals are regularly confronted with this complex clinical scenario in both outpatient and inpatient settings. A thorough medical history, especially the identification of red flags (e.g., prior trauma

Frontiers and future perspectives of neuroimmunology.

Neuroimmunology is an interdisciplinary branch of biomedical science that emerges from the intersection of studies on the nervous system and the immune system. The complex interplay between the two systems has long been recognized. Research efforts directed at the underlying functional interface and associated pathophysiology, however, have garnered attention only in recent decades. In this narrative review, we highlight significant advances in research on neuroimmune interplay and modulation. A particular focus is on early- and middle-career neuroimmunologists in China and their achievements

Current and future applications of biomarkers in samples collected through minimally invasive methods for cancer medicine and population-based research.

Despite advances in cancer medicine and research, invasive and potentially risky procedures such as biopsies, venous blood tests, imaging, colonoscopy, and pap smear tests are still primarily used for screening, staging, and assessing response to therapy. The development and interdisciplinary use of biomarkers from urine, feces, saliva, scent, and capillary blood collected with minimally invasive methods represents a potential opportunity for integration with biomarker analysis for cancers, both in clinical practice (e.g., in screening, treatment, and disease monitoring, and improved quality o
