Rectal Inflammatory Myoglandular Polyp with Osseous Metaplasia in a Child.

Background: Inflammatory myoglandular polyp (IMGP) combines the histopathological features of juvenile polyp and Peutz-Jegher's polyp. Osseous metaplasia can be occasionally seen in various benign, adenomatous, and malignant polyps. Case report: A nine-year-old girl with hematochezia had a rectal polyp with histological features of IMGP with additional stromal osseous metaplasia. Conclusion: Benign osseous metaplasia can be found in IMGP.

Filiform Polyposis in Ulcerative Colitis: A Rare Pediatric Case.

BACKGROUND: Filiform polyposis is a rare benign condition referred to as inflammatory polyposis, or pseudopolyposis that is usually found in association with Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis or granulomatous colitis which is formed by non-specific mucosal and submucosal reactions to previous severe inflammation. It is characterized by multiple finger-like projections most commonly in the transverse and descending colon. CASE REPORT: A 15-year-old girl with a history of ulcerative colitis was admitted to the pediatric emergency department with abdominal pain attacks for the past 2 weeks. Abd

Serrated colon polyps as precursors to colorectal cancer.

Identification of the serrated neoplasia pathway has improved our understanding of the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer (CRC). Insights include an increased recognition of the malignant potential of different types of serrated polyps such as sessile and traditional serrated adenomas. Sessile serrated adenomas share molecular features with colon tumors that have microsatellite instability and a methylator phenotype, indicating that these lesions are precursors that progress via the serrated neoplasia pathway. These data have important implications for clinical practice and CRC prevention, beca

[Colonic localization of pseudopolypoid type disclosing Recklinghausen's neurofibromatosis].

A case of colonic Recklinghausen neurofibromatosis found in a forty-two-year-old woman is presented. Only the colon was affected. The first symptom was rectal bleeding. Widespread polypoid lesions involving the rectum, sigmoid, left colon and part of the transverse colon were demonstrated upon barium enema and rectosigmoidoscopic examinations. As demonstrated by a review of the medical literature, colonic involvement in Recklinghausen disease is very infrequent and forms restricted to the colon are exceptional. The pathologic findings and the clinical, radiological and endoscopic features in c

Azathioprine does not reduce adenoma formation in a mouse model of sporadic intestinal tumorigenesis.

AIM: To investigate if azathioprine could reduce adenoma formation in Apc(Min/+) , a mouse model of sporadic intestinal tumorigenesis. METHODS: Azathioprine was administered via drinking water (estimated 6-20 mg/kg body weight per day) to Apc(Min/+) and wildtype mice. Control animals received vehicle only (DMSO) dissolved in drinking water. At 15 wk of age all mice were sacrificed and intestines of Apc(Min/+) were harvested for evaluation of polyp number. Azathioprine induced toxicity was investigated by immunohistochemical analysis on spleens. RESULTS: All azathioprine treated mice showed s

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome: case report and literature review.

Periorificial lentiginosis, also knew as Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome (PJS), is an autosomally dominant inherited condition determined by a mutation localized at 19p13.3 responsible for mucocutaneous pigmentation and gastrointestinal polyps. Skin- and mucosal pigmentation may be present at birth but usually occur in early childhood, and occasionally may develop later. Round, oval or irregular patches of brown or almost black pigmentation 1 to 5 mm diameter, irregularly distributed over the oral mucosa, gums, hard palate and lips (especially the lower) are observed. The pigmented maculae on the face,…

Hamartomatous polyposis syndrome associated malignancies: Risk, pathogenesis and endoscopic surveillance.

Hamartomatous polyposis syndromes (HPS) are a heterogeneous spectrum of diseases that are characterized by diffuse hamartomatous polyps lining the gastrointestinal (GI) tract together with extra-GI manifestations. Classical HPS includes juvenile polyposis syndrome, Peutz-Jeghers syndrome, PTEN hamartoma tumor syndrome and hereditary mixed polyposis syndrome. Patients with HPS have a higher risk of GI and extra-GI malignancies than the general population, although the underlying mechanisms remain unclear and are obviously different from the carcinogenesis of classical adenocarcinoma and colitis

The use of ultrasound to demonstrate small bowel polyps in a patient with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome.

A 21-year-old woman presented to the accident and emergency department with a 2-day history of lower abdominal pain. Her lips had the stigma of melanosis. Previously, she had received a diagnosis of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome, although no polyps had been detected in small and large bowel barium studies performed approximately 8 years before. Clinically, the patient had mild deep lower abdominal tenderness, and a mass was palpable in the suprapubic region. Urgent ultrasound showed ileoileal intussusception and small polyps in the lumen of the small bowel. At laparotomy, ileoileal intussusception wa
