Trephine-based in situ arthrodesis of the central tarsometatarsal joints: Clinical outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis of the second and third tarsometatarsal (TMT) joints is a common cause of midfoot pain. Arthrodesis is a reliable treatment, although optimal joint preparation and fixation remain debated. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study included 31 feet in 30 patients undergoing isolated or combined second and third TMT arthrodesis for idiopathic osteoarthritis (2016-2022). The technique used trephine-based joint preparation, calcaneal autograft, and nitinol staple fixation. Outcomes included MOXFQ, AOFAS scores, union, and complications. RESULTS: Radiographic union was achi…

Beyond joints: the importance of animal models in exploring rheumatoid arthritis comorbidities.

Joint inflammation is the most prominent feature of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but this disease can affect practically any organ of the body. The association between RA and comorbidities is multifaceted, involving traditional risk factors, chronic inflammation, and the effects of medications. A large number of animal models have been developed for the study of RA. All of them developed histopathological changes, such as human diseases, and often experienced other comorbidities. The choice of one model or another depends on several factors. It is important to bear in mind, for example, the stud

Refinement of the Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Synovitis Model in Equine Middle Carpal Joints.

The aim of this study was to refine the lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced synovitis model in normal carpal joints of Thoroughbred horses by comparing two low LPS doses. A further aim was to investigate the relationship between the induced synovitis and lameness. The study design consisted of two phases using nine horses with a unilateral crossover design and a within-animal saline control. Synoviocentesis was performed at post-injection hour (PIH) 0, 8, 24, 72 and 168, allowing for synovial fluid cytology and biomarker analysis. Objective gait and thermographic analysis were used to objectively…

Spectroscopic Analysis of the Extracellular Matrix in Naked Mole-Rat Temporomandibular Joints.

Naked mole-rats are extremely long-living rodents with a maximum lifespan of 37 years, and their cellular aging and tissue aging are almost nonexistent. Therefore, in this study, we aim to analyze the extracellular matrix of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) of naked mole-rats at the molecular level and explore the molecules involved in anti-aging and their localization. Micro-computed tomography (CT) scans revealed increased mineral density and wear of the mandibular condyle in aged mice. Conversely, CT scans did not reveal wear of the mandibular condyle in naked mole-rats, and histological a

Custom Ankle-Foot Orthosis in Foot Drop: Influence on Body Joints Kinematics.

Ankle Foot Orthoses (AFOs) are external supports typically prescribed in clinical practice to address foot drop deficits. Lower limb orthoses have been shown to have positive effects on spatio-temporal gait metrics, while the impact on body joint kinematics is less clear and varies in the literature. The objective of this study is to investigate the presence of a common movement pattern in body joints that compensates for the foot drop deficit. The study focuses on the trunk, knee, and hip joints. Eight patients with unilateral foot drop participated in walking trials on an instrumented treadm…

Comparative Microbiomes of the Respiratory Tract and Joints of Feedlot Cattle Mortalities.

A comparative study of microbiota of the respiratory tract and joints of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) cattle mortalities was undertaken. Nasopharynx, trachea, lung and joint samples were collected from 32 cattle that died of BRD, "cases", and 8 that died of other causes, "controls". Bacterial diversity was lower (p < 0.05) in the nasopharynx, trachea and lungs of cases as compared to controls. In cases, alpha-diversity (p < 0.05) was lower in the lungs and joints than the nasopharynx. Proteobacteria, Tenericutes, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes and Actinobacteria were the most abundant phyla in …

Mechanical loading of cranial joints minimizes the craniofacial phenotype in Crouzon syndrome.

Children with syndromic forms of craniosynostosis undergo a plethora of surgical interventions to resolve the clinical features caused by the premature fusion of cranial sutures. While surgical correction is reliable, the need for repeated rounds of invasive treatment puts a heavy burden on the child and their family. This study explores a non-surgical alternative using mechanical loading of the cranial joints to prevent or delay craniofacial phenotypes associated with Crouzon syndrome. We treated Crouzon syndrome mice before the onset of craniosynostosis by cyclical mechanical loading of cran…

Cutting-Edge Technologies for Inflamed Joints on Chip: How Close Are We?

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a painful and disabling musculoskeletal disorder, with a large impact on the global population, resulting in several limitations on daily activities. In OA, inflammation is frequent and mainly controlled through inflammatory cytokines released by immune cells. These outbalanced inflammatory cytokines cause cartilage extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation and possible growth of neuronal fibers into subchondral bone triggering pain. Even though pain is the major symptom of musculoskeletal diseases, there are still no effective treatments to counteract it and the mechanisms

Inflammatory disease of the costotransverse joints: US evaluation in 15 symptomatic patients.

The costotransverse joints (CTJs) are small arthrodial joints which articulate with the costal tuberosity on the transverse process of the thoracic vertebrae. CTJs are composed of oval-shaped facets with a major axis, vertical at the upper vertebrae and almost horizontal at the lower vertebrae. This position explains the different movements of the ribs: the cranial ribs move on the sagittal plane and the caudal ribs on the transverse plane. Movements in directions other than these usual CTJ spatial planes can cause inflammation resulting in a stinging pain in the space between the scapula and …

MRI of the sacroiliac joints: what is and what is not sacroiliitis?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: MRI has, as the only imaging modality, the ability to visualize both the inflammatory and destructive aspects of sacroiliitis and is a crucial element in the diagnosis and classification of axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA). However, the MRI appearance of several potential differential diagnoses may resemble axSpA sacroiliitis. RECENT FINDINGS: The appearances of sacroiliac joint (SIJ) MRIs of various diseased and healthy populations have recently been intensively studied.
