RIFT VALLEY FEVER : A REPORT OF THREE CASES OF LABORATORY INFECTION AND THE EXPERIMENTAL TRANSMISSION OF THE DISEASE TO FERRETS.

Three cases of Rift Valley fever in human individuals are reported. The virus was recovered from the respiratory tract of the patients and was transmitted to ferrets by the intranasal route. The experimental disease so produced in ferrets is characterized by fever, marked pulmonary lesions, and hemorrhagic phenomena. The results indicate that the virus of Rift Valley fever belongs to the group of filterable viruses which may gain entrance to the human body through the respiratory tract. The differential diagnosis of Rift Valley fever and influenza is discussed. While, clinically, this is a dif

Knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding cross-infection control among dental laboratory technicians in Bulgaria: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Cross-infection control is essential for high-quality oral health care. Dental technicians, as key members of the dental team, handle clinical materials and manage laboratory processes that pose biological risks. Despite their university-level training in Bulgaria, little is known about their awareness, attitudes, and compliance with infection control standards. METHODS: A nationwide cross-sectional study was conducted from August 2024 to March 2025 among dental technicians registered with the Bulgarian Dental Technician Association. An online questionnaire was used to assess thei

Comprehensive Laboratory Analysis of a Scrub Typhus and H1N1 Influenza Co-Infection: A Case Report from Hainan, China.

Co-infection of Orientia tsutsugamushi and influenza A virus complicates diagnosis and treatment in endemic regions because of overlapping clinical features and potential synergistic inflammation. We describe a 68-year-old woman from Hainan, China, who presented with five days of high fever (39.2 °C), nonproductive cough, eschar formation, lymphadenopathy, cytopenias, elevated liver enzymes, and raised inflammatory markers. On the day of admission, influenza A was confirmed by rapid antigen test and Orientia tsutsugamushi IgM/IgG was detected via colloidal-gold immunochromatography, prompting

Elevated Soluble ACE2 Activity in Children and Adults After SARS-CoV-2 Exposure Irrespective of Laboratory-Confirmed Infection.

The pivotal role of the cell entry receptor ACE2 for SARS-CoV-2 infection is well-established. When ACE2 is shed from cell surface into plasma as soluble ACE2 (sACE2), it can effectively neutralize SARS-CoV-2. This longitudinal prospective cohort study analyzed sACE2 activity in 1192 participants, aged 4 months to 81 years, 3 and 12 months after SARS-CoV-2 household exposure. Following SARS-CoV-2 exposure, participants exhibited significantly elevated sACE2 activity, irrespective of confirmed infection, with the highest levels observed in exposed children. Longitudinal analysis revealed a decl

Metagenomic Next-Generation Sequencing Versus Traditional Laboratory Methods for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Infection in Liver Transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) has emerged as an effective method for the noninvasive and precise detection of infectious pathogens. However, data are lacking on whether mNGS analyses could be used for the diagnosis and treatment of infection during the perioperative period in patients undergoing liver transplantation (LT). METHODS: From February 2018 to October 2018, we conducted an exploratory study using mNGS and traditional laboratory methods (TMs), including culture, serologic assays, and nucleic acid testing, for pathogen detection in 42 pairs of cadaveric liv

Clinical and Laboratory Effects of Doxycycline and Prednisolone in Ixodes scapularis-Exposed Dogs With Chronic Anaplasma phagocytophilum Infection.

Persistent infection of Anaplasma phagocytophilum (AP) after treatment and immunosuppression has not been studied in dogs infected with AP after Ixodes scapularis infestation. This descriptive pilot study evaluated 6 laboratory-reared beagles that were persistently positive for AP antibodies after infestation with wild-caught I. scapularis. After 20 weeks, 3 of 6 dogs were administered doxycycline orally for 28 days, and all 6 dogs were then administered prednisolone at 2.2 mg/kg orally for 14 days. Blood was collected from all 6 dogs and evaluated by complete blood count, AP antibodies, and A

A laboratory-based evaluation of the BioStar Optical ImmunoAssay point-of-care test for diagnosing Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection.

The development of gonococcal point-of-care tests (POCTs) has been challenging due to the relatively monomorphic nature of the Neisseria genus. The BioStar Optical ImmunoAssay (OIA) POCT for diagnosing Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection detects a specific epitope on the L7/L12 ribosomal protein, which reduces cross-reactivity with other neisseriae, and produces a highly specific test. A laboratory-based evaluation of this POCT was performed to determine its analytical sensitivity and specificity. A panel of N. gonorrhoeae (n=158) and non-gonococcal Neisseria (n=62) isolates were examined. The OIA
