Effect of lactic acid bacteria on diarrheal diseases.

Microbial balance is an important factor in the maintenance of intestinal homeostasis, and yogurt or fermented milk supplementation has been proposed to control diarrheal diseases. A number of studies using animal models and clinical studies in humans have confirmed the beneficial effect of such fermented products in case of lactose intolerance, viral diarrhea or antibiotics-associated diarrhea. The mechanisms by which lactic acid bacteria exert their effects are multiple. Bacterial lactase improves the absorption of lactose, but fermented products slow down the intestinal transit facilitating…

Effect of orally administered epidermal growth factor on intestinal recovery of neonatal pigs infected with rotavirus.

The effect of oral epidermal growth factor (EGF) on histological and biochemical changes in epithelium in the small intestine was studied in … mall intestine. Rotavirus infection decreased villus height by 37% and reduced specific activity of lactase by 54%, of leucine aminopeptidase by 43%, and of alkaline phosphatase by 54% in the small intestine, compared with noninfected pigs. Only the supraphysiological dose of EGF (1.0 mg/L) consistently increased villus height in the proximal and mid-smal …

[Lactulose fermentation and lactose absorption in Chilean patients with liver cirrhosis: importance for hepatic encephalopathy therapy].

BACKGROUND: Non-absorbable carbohydrates are widely used in the therapy of hepatic encephalopathy. It has been argued that their effects depend on intestinal fermentation. In some geographic areas other than Chile up to 27% of healthy inhabitants are not able to increase breath hydrogen after a lactulose load, a parameter of intestinal fermentation of carbohydrate. Lactose has been proposed as an alternative to non-absorbable disaccharides in patients with lactase deficiency. AIM: To investigate intestinal fermentation of lactulose and lactose malabsorption in Chilean patients with liver cirr…

Lactose-intolerance may induce severe chronic eczema.

The primary acquired lactase deficiency of the adult is known to cause various disturbances in the gastrointestinal tract while extraintestinal symptoms are unusual. Here we report on a histologically proven chronic eczema requiring corticosteroid treatment for several months. It was obviously induced by a concomitant lactose intolerance since the introduction of a lactose-free diet led to a complete disappearance of the eczema and allowed the discontinuation of the corticosteroid treatment. As far as we know, this is the first case report of an eczema caused by a lactose intolerance.

Management of lactose intolerance.

The management of lactose intolerance comprises two parts: (1) the basic principles of treatment in persons intolerant to a dietary dose of lactose, and (2) main manoeuvres to reduce the lactose content in food, and/or consumption of special products of milk or exogenous lactase enzyme. The tactics of management depend on the type of hypolactasia, the severity of intolerance, and on the age of the patient. Special attention is paid to the development of lactose intolerance in some patients via iatrogenic mechanisms such as certain drugs, gastric surgery and ionizing radiation.

Lactose-poor milk in adult lactose intolerance.

The frequency of lactose intolerance was studied in patients with chronic gastrointestinal disease, mainly peptic ulcer to explore the possibilities of the use of lactose-poor milk. It was found that whole milk caused dyspeptic symptoms in 45% of patients with peptic ulcer; lactose-intolerance was present in 82% of the patients with milk intolerance; lactose poor powdered milk resulted in complete freedom from symptoms. Use of milk with reduced lactose contents is recommended in the diet of adult patients with lactase deficiency.

[Incidence of lactose intolerance in postmenopausal osteoporosis].

The incidence of lactose intolerance was determined in 31 women with idiopathic postmenopausal osteoporosis. Nine subjects exhibited a pathological rise in blood glucose (less than 20 mg/100 ml) after receiving 50 g lactose. The absorption of glucose and galactose, xylose, and fat was normal in the 31 patients. Daily intake of calcium was below the normal range in 3 subjects with and in 6 subjects without lactose intolerance. The association between lactase deficiency and osteoporosis is stressed.

Human adaptations to diet: Biological and cultural coevolution.

Modern humans evolved in Africa some 200,000 years ago, and since then, human populations have expanded and diversified to occupy a broad ra … n this text, we review four examples of gene-culture coevolution: (i) the persistence of the enzyme lactase after weaning, which allows the digestion of milk in adulthood, related to the emergence of dairy farming during the Neolithic; (ii) the population differences in alcohol susceptibility, in particular the ethanol intolerance of Asian populations due …

Anthropometric and metabolic profile of children with gene polymorphisms for primary lactose intolerance.

Primary lactose intolerance is caused by a genetically programmed loss in lactase production after 5-6 years of age. Milk and dairy products are often incriminated as a cause of gastrointestinal symptoms. Recent studies show that lactase persistence in adult life correlates with higher anthropometric indexes and an altered metabolic profile. We aimed to assess whether the presence of gene polymorphisms for primary lactose intolerance has an influence on the anthropometric and metabolic profile of children. We conducted a cross-sectional study, recruiting consecutive children evaluated at the 2…

Evaluation of a novel reverse-hybridization StripAssay for typing DNA variants useful in diagnosis of adult-type hypolactasia.

BACKGROUND: Adult-type hypolactasia is a genetically determined inability to digest lactose after weaning. Two single-nucleotide polymorphisms (C-13910T, G-22018A) located upstream of the lactase gene (LCT) within the gene MCM6 are associated with the lactase persistence/non-persistence trait in patients of European descent. Therefore, the genotyping of these SNPs has been established as a diagnostic tool for adult-type hypolactasia. We have recently shown that several novel allelic variants located in close proximity to the C-13910T SNP interfere with the diagnostic accuracy of real-time PCR-…

Lactose maldigestion in breast-feeding Gambian infants.

BACKGROUND: The ability of breast-feeding infants to utilize lactose, the major carbohydrate in breast-milk, is dependent on the presence of the enzyme lactase (E.C.3.2.1.108). Lactase is located in the brush border of the small intestine and because of its exposed position it is extremely vulnerable to pathogenic damage. Breast-fed Gambian infants have poor growth associated with intestinal damage beyond 3-4 months. The aim of this study was to assess the ability of Gambian infants aged 2-15 months (N = 113) to digest lactose and to see how this varied with age, intestinal permeability, and g…

[Clinical effectiveness of the therapeutic nutrition of sick children using enteral feeding preparations and low-lactose mixtures].

The paper concerns the results of clinical trials of new specialized foods--protein, defatted and fat enpits as well as low lactose milk mixtures, which were used in dietotherapy of sick children with different disease entities (hypothrophy, bronchopulmonary abnormalities, emaciation pre- and postoperatively, mucoviscidosis, Laurence-Moon-Bardte-Biedle's syndrome, Marfan's syndrome, galactosemia, lactase deficiency). The diets including new therapeutic foods were shown to exert high therapeutic effects, that gave grounds for the methodological recommendations for using them in pediatrics to be…

Lactose Intolerance - Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms and Treatment.

The majority (about 70%) of the world's population suffers from lactose intolerance. Lactose intolerance leads to long-term discomfort when consuming milk and dairy products, and hence, to their avoidance. Consequently, the intake of important nutrients is reduced, which potentially has a negative impact on the overall health. Knowing the condition - lactose intolerance - will prevent people from unnecessarily restricting dairy products in their diets. In this study, lactose synthesis and catabolism in the human body are presented, also the types of lactose intolerance, as well as the methods
