Childhood lead poisoning is a man-made disease whose magnitude has not yet been measured in Chile. In the U.S.A. it has been estimated that 4 percent of children have elevated blood lead levels and that among poor black children, this rate is as high as 18 percent. The main sources of symptomatic lead poisoning are lead-based paint used in interior and exterior house surfaces, airborne lead from leaded gasoline and industrial emissions. Data collected for the Edinburgh Lead Study have been used to investigate lead concentrations in children's naturally shed deciduous teeth. Most studies on lead toxicity in the suckling rat have been performed with doses leading to growth retardation. In a previous paper ( Sundstr öm et al. 1983), the effects of different lead doses on normal suckling rats were described. Information pertaining to 294 cases of bovine lead poisoning that occurred during the 15-year period from 1968 to 1982 was collected from the toxicology laboratory records at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Water lead levels fell after hardening was introduced whereas there was a small rise in water lead levels in a control area monitored over the same time. During a 6-year period, 23 Navajo adolescents were hospitalized 47 times for presumed lead intoxication secondary to gasoline sniffing. Most patients were male (87%) and sniffed gasoline as a social activity, more frequently in spring and summer. Sixty-five percent of the patients first presented with toxic encephalopathy. 47 lead-poisoned children, treated and without encephalopathy, are compared with sibling controls on perceptual-verbal pattern comparisons of subtests of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children to determine whether there has been brain damage. Both groups of children do not differ significantly from each other on comparisons of these patterns, and they appear to be similar to each other in WISC functioning. The conclusion is that lead-poisoning, treated, and without encephalopathy, does not result in detectable brain damage by means of these pattern analyses.

Chromosomes in cultured lymphocytes from the following groups were analyzed: 16 workers from a smelting plant for storage batteriers in Lyon, France; 7 workers from a factory where tin dishes are made at Nerem, Belgium; and 20 controls. The choice of the workers was made on the basis of either elevated blood lead (Lyon) or elevated urinary delta-aminolevulinic acid (Nerem). An increased number of severe aberrations--rings and dicentrics--were detected in the persons from Lyon, whereas no such aberrations but an increased number of fragments were seen in those from Nerem.
