A 10-year-old male captive tiger (Panthera tigris) developed right-sided facial asymmetry and enlargement. Computed tomography revealed a destructive mass of the right maxillary bone with right nasal cavity involvement. Histopathology indicated a spindle cell sarcoma. A single fraction of 22 Gy using stereotactic radiotherapy was prescribed. After treatment, the facial conformation returned to normal and the tiger resumed normal behavior. BACKGROUND: Leiomyosarcomas of soft tissue are malignant tumours that are not infrequently encountered in clinical medicine and histopathology. Such sarcomas of the eye are, however, a rare occurrence.
PURPOSE: Herein, the histopathological features of a case of conjunctival leiomyosarcoma are described. A 38-year-old HIV-positive male, who was otherwise fit and healthy, presented with redness of his right eye and a mass of the conjunctiva. Ulcerative colitis (UC) is known to be associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer. However, the occurrence of non-epithelial malignancies is uncommon. An elevated lesion in the descending colon was found in a 51-year-old woman with a 30-year history of UC. Despite tumor progression, repeated biopsies showed no cancerous findings. Primary ovarian leiomyosarcoma is a very rare tumour which is most commonly seen in postmenopausal women. Leiomyosarcoma of the broad ligament is a rare tumour, since only 15 cases have been reported thus far in the English literature. A case of retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma (LMS) in a 38-year-old woman who had a tumor in the retroperitoneum with severe hypertension and hypokalemia is presented. Further investigation revealed an elevated serum aldosterone and norepinephrine level. After tumorectomy, the levels of serum aldosterone and norepinephrine successfully normalized; hypertension and hypokalemia were also cured. Pancreatic tumors are primary in most of the cases. Pancreatic metastases associated with other primary malignancies, especially pancreatic metastasis of leiomyosarcoma, are uncommon.
