Interrelationship between ectoparasites and wild rodents from Tijucas do Sul, state of Paraná, Brazil.

Sixteen species of ectoparasites were collected from 50 wild rodents, from August 1990 to August 1991, in an area of Araucaria augustifolia forest, in the municipality of Tijucas do Sul, State of Paraná, Brazil. Ectoparasites infested 98% of the rodents, with the highest indices of infestation found in the drycool season. Species that occurred in single or multiple infestations were recorded. Ectoparasite/host associations were significant (p < 0.01) for Gigantolaelaps wolffsohni/Oryzomys nigripes, Polygenis pradoi/Oxymycterus sp. and Amblyopinus sp./Oxymycterus sp. The following represent new

Phthiriasis palpebrarum in a 7-year-old girl: a case report.

This case report presents a rare instance of phthiriasis palpebrarum in a 7-year-old female patient. The patient complained of bilateral eyelid pruritus and erythema lasting for 3 weeks. Slit-lamp examination revealed adult lice and nits adhering to the palpebral margins, and microscopic assessment confirmed the diagnosis of Pthirus pubis infestation. Following multiple treatment attempts, all lice and nits were successfully eliminated. With the application of tobramycin eye ointment, the patient achieved full recovery. Phthiriasis palpebrarum is an uncommon condition, especially in pediatric

First molecular detection of Bartonella spp. in two chewing louse species (Amblycera: Menoponidae and Ischnocera: Philopteridae) parasitizing Calonectris borealis (Cory, 1881) (Procellariiformes: Procellariidae).

Procellariidae is the most diverse family of the order Procellariiformes, with 13 genera and about 90 species of seabirds. The genus Calonectris is represented by three species in the Atlantic Ocean. Bartonella spp. is a globally distributed bacterium primarily affecting mammals, with transmission through hematophagous arthropod vectors. Recent studies have found Bartonella in non-mammals like birds and turtles, prompting the present study to explore the potential role of chewing lice in its transmission. Here, we report two different Bartonella genotypes in each lice species identified: one s

Chemoreception in the salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis: an electrophysiology approach.

The search for effective and long-term solutions to the problems caused by salmon lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer, 1837) has increasingly included biological/ecological mechanisms to combat infestation. One aspect of this work focuses on the host-associated stimuli that parasites use to locate and discriminate a compatible host. In this study we used electrophysiological recordings made directly from the antennule of adult lice to investigate the chemosensitivity of L. salmonis to putative chemical attractants from fish flesh, prepared by soaking whole fish tissue in seawater. There was a

Case report: a new method for treatment of permethrin - resistant head lice.

Head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) infestation is an important disease worldwide, especially in children under 11 years old. Permethrin is the most common insecticide for treatment of human pediculosis, but nowadays resistance to permethrin and other pyrethroids has caused many treatment failures. The second treatment of choice is malathion.

Clinical applications of topical ivermectin in dermatology.

Ivermectin (IVM) is a broad-spectrum anti-parasitic drug with significant anti-inflammatory properties. The emergence of treatment resistance to lindane, permethrin, and possibly malathion complicates the global strategy for management of common parasitic skin diseases such as scabies and head lice. In this regard. IVM has been safely and effectively used in the treatment of these common human infestations. In addition, IVM may be useful in inflammatory cutaneous disorders such as papulopustular rosacea where demodex may play a role in pathogenesis. Herein, we review the current applications o
