Type V biliary cyst with cystolithiasis.

We present the case of a 40-year-old female who presented to the General Surgery clinic due to a single episode of abdominal pain which required a visit to the Emergency Department. The patient had undergone surgery during childhood due to the suspicion of a hepatic hydatid cyst. However, an intraoperative cholangiography identified a small, non-complicated biliary cyst. Therefore, a hepatic resection was not performed. The patient did not undergo follow-up of the lesion.

Late Pleistocene/Early Holocene Evidence of Prostatic Stones at Al Khiday Cemetery, Central Sudan.

The recovery of three stone-like ovoid objects within the burial of a pre-Mesolithic (Late Pleistocene/Early Holocene) individual at Al Khid … cates on-going infectious processes in the individual. This discovery of the earliest known case of lithiasis extends the appearance of prostatic stones into the Late Pleistocene/Early Holocene, a disease which therefore can no longer be considered exclusive to the modern era, but which also affected prehistoric individuals, whose lifestyle and diet were si …

Dacryolithiasis: A Review.

PURPOSE: To review and summarize the clinical features, presentations, diagnostic modalities and management of dacryolithiasis. METHODS: A comprehensive PubMed search of all English articles on dacryolithiasis was reviewed. Although this review primarily relied on articles written in English, non-English-language articles that had abstracts translated into English were also reviewed. Data reviewed included epidemiology, pathogenesis, appearance and composition, clinical features, presentations, diagnostic modalities, management of dacryolithiasis and the implications of incidental dacryoliths…

Familial occurrence of pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis in 3 siblings.

Pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis (PAM) is a rare disease of unknown etiology characterized by intra-alveolar calcium deposits. More than 500 cases were reported in the literature. The disorder affects people at every age beginning from the early childhood. It occurs probably as a result of autosomal recessive transmission. Familial occurrence is often found with family history of the disease being present in up to 50% of the reported cases. We report PAM in 3 siblings.

[Rhinolithiasis].

INTRODUCTION: A rhinolith is a rock which forms in the nose. It occurs from the solidification of mucus and nasal debris: by mineral salts, calcium, magnesium phosphate and carbonate, and it leads to unilateral obstruction of the nasal airway followed by inflammatory changes of the nasal mucus membrane and paranasal cavities. This inflammatory process may lead to a purulent form with complications, intracranial propagation and dacryocystitis. CASE REPORT: This is a case report of a patient with rhinolithiasis, 30 years of age, complaining of breathing difficulties for 10 years, with nasal sec…

[Pyonephrosis complicated by a pyogenic psoas abscess. Apropos of a case].

Psoas abscess of pyogenic origin developed secondary to renal infection in a patient with coralliform lithiasis, a favorable outcome being obtained after nephrectomy and drainage of abscess. Clinical diagnosis is difficult but ultrasound and CT scan imaging provide useful data. Other causes of pyogenic abscess are discussed, the most frequent origin being digestive disease.

[Percutaneous catheterization of the intestinal loop of hepatico- jejunostomy: a new possibility in the treatment of complex biliary diseases].

OBJECTIVES: After hepatico-jejunostomy, endoscopic exploration of the biliary tract is not possible, and percutaneous transjejunal catheterization seems to be an attractive option. PATIENTS: This is a 10 year prospective evaluation of 55 percutaneous transjejunal biliary interventions in 53 patients. RESULTS: Thirty nine patients had biliary lithiasis, 10 had suspected recurrent biliary cancer, 5 biliary stenosis, and 1 angiocholitic intrahepatic abscess. Initial success was obtained in all patients and 155 procedures were performed. Interventions included strictures, dilatation, stone extra…

[Celioscopic cholecystectomy. A survey of the French Society of Endoscopic Surgery and Operative Radiology. Apropos of 937 cases].

Twenty-eight surgeons, members of the Société Française de Chirurgie Endoscopique et de Radiologie Opératoire, took part in this multicenter study, carried out between March 1989 and January 1991. Nine hundred and thirty-seven patients were entered into the study, 934 of whom presented with biliary lithiasis and 3 with gallbladder polyps. Biliary colic was found in 918 (98 percent) of patients. One hundred and twenty-five patients (13.3 percent) presented with acute cholecystitis. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy had to be converted to traditional laparotomy in 50 cases (5.3 percent). The most fre…

[Preliminary experience in extracorporeal renal surgery and autotransplants].

Successful management of stenosis of a polar branch of the renal artery by means of autotransplantation is reported. The main indications for this technique are described: arteriosclerosis and injury to the artery, aneurysm, various forms of ureteral injury, bilateral or unilateral renal tumour, coralliform intraparenchymal lithiasis, together, with the techniques for extracorporeal perfusion of the kidney and the mechanisms of the more commonly adopted conservation solutions.

[When cholangiocholecystography should and should not be performed].

Little-know contraindications for i.v. cholangiocholecystography with water-soluble hexaiodated contrast media are presented. Particular reference is made to suspected cholecystic lithiasis and dysprotidaemic patients or those undergoing treatment with sulphamides, salicylic acid, barbiturates, etc. Lastly, reference is made to the suitability of cholegraphy in suspected acute cholecystitis. Here, in fact, this method is preferable to oral cholecystography.

Indications for a medium mineral high bicarbonate water (Cerelia) in urology.

To increase water intake is an useful prophylactic treatment for many urologic diseases, such as urolithiasis or urinary tract infection. An high water intake increases urinary volume with a dilutional effect that involves a consequent decrease of the concentrations of urinary solutes and a reduction of the levels of the salts involved in the lithogenic process. Furthermore the increased flow of urine in the urinary tract also improves the elimination of debris, gravel and bacteria. The intake of a water (Cerelia) with medium mineral (calcium 119.7 mg/l) and high bicarbonate (412 mg/l) content…

[The significance of the duodenal papilla within the framework of diseases of gallbladder and bile ducts].

On the basis of 3185 biliary tract operations performed at the city hospitals of Braunschweig and Lüneburg, 12% of which included papillotomies, the frequency and pathogenesis of Vater's papilla stenosis is discussed. About 5% of all stenoses of Vater's papilla do not appear in connection with lithiasis in the biliary tract; these are defined as primary stenoses. 95% of Vater's papilla stenoses occur with lithiasis and inflammatory diseases of biliary tract. Stenosis of Vater's papilla is most often seen in connection with severe cholecystitis and pericholecystitis. There exists in most cases …

Ureteroscopy from the recent past to the near future.

Stone surgery is one of oldest surgical practices undertaken by man. Hippocrates refused to let his followers "cut for the stone" and it was … now the treatment of choice in most cases. As far as we know humans have always had stones. First, lithiasis was endemic bladder stones in children, now it is renal in general. Added to this a number of well-known risk factors, a rapid increase in obesity in the population, as well as bariatric surgery for its treatment, are causing an increase in the prev …

Modalities of testing Helicobacter pylori in patients with nonmalignant bile duct diseases.

AIM: This paper describes the procedure of detection of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) in bile specimens in patients suffering from benign diseases of biliary ducts (lithiasis with/without nonspecific cholangitis). METHODS: The group of 72 patients entering the study consisted of 32 male and 40 female (45% and 55%, respectively). Bile was obtained during ERCP in 68 patients, and during cholecystectomy in 4 patients. A fast urease test (FUT) to determine the existence of H. pylori in gastric mucosa was carried out for all the patients during the endoscopic examination. The existence of geneti…

Fragmentation of biliary tract stones by lithotripsy using local anesthesia.

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy has become an important mode of therapy for renal lithiasis in patients who cannot withstand surgery. Recently, this method has been successful in fragmenting biliary stones in selected healthy patients. We report the successful fragmentation of biliary stones after the administration of local anesthesia in two patients who were poor surgical risks.
