Listening to speech elicits brain activity time-locked to the speech sounds. This so-called neural entrainment to speech was found to be atypical in dyslexia, a reading impairment associated with neural speech processing deficits. We hypothesized that the brain responses of dyslexic vs. normal readers to real-life speech would be different, and thus the strength of inter-subject correlation (ISC) would differ from that of typical readers and be reflected in reading-related measures. We recorded magnetoencephalograms (MEG) of 23 dyslexic and 21 typically-reading adults during listening to ~10

Though recent years have seen a growth in research on predictive processes in language comprehension, their scope and mechanisms remain partially elusive. While mechanisms involved in predicting specific words are relatively well understood, those underlying syntactic prediction are still unclear. In part, this is because of the difficulty in designing experiments that manipulate syntactic predictability while controlling other variables. In this MEG study, we achieved this with a manipulation of syntactic category predictability within fully well-formed expressions of Standard Arabic. Partici

OBJECTIVE: Brain electromagnetic activity in patients with epilepsy is characterized by abnormal high-amplitude transient events (spikes) and abnormal patterns of synchronization of brain rhythms that accompany epileptic seizures. With the aim of improving methods for identifying epileptogenic sources in magnetoencephalographic (MEG) recordings of brain data, we applied methods previously used in the study of oceanic 'rogue waves' and other freak events in complex systems.
APPROACH: For data from three patients who were awaiting surgical treatment for epilepsy, we used a beamformer source mod

Transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive method for modulating human brain activity. Although there are several hypot … dal, cathodal, or sham occipital tDCS, and then completed a visual flanker task during high-density magnetoencephalography (MEG). The resulting oscillatory responses were imaged in the time-frequency domain using beamforming, and the effects of tDCS on task-related oscillations and spontaneous neural activity were assessed. The results indicated that anodal tDCS of the …

This study investigates whether movement kinematics modulates similarly the rolandic α and β rhythm amplitude during executed and observed goal-directed hand movements. It also assesses if this modulation relates to the corticokinematic coherence (CKC), which is the coupling observed between cortical activity and movement kinematics during such motor actions. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) signals were recorded from 11 right-handed healthy subjects while they performed or observed an actor performing the same repetitive hand pinching action. Subjects' and actor's forefinger movements were monito…

Visual dysfunction can be caused by several abnormalities, including dysfunctions in the visual cortex and retina. Our aim was to investigate changes in visual evoked brain responses in the primary visual cortex associated with Parkinson's disease (PD). Sixteen healthy control subjects and ten patients with PD participated in this study. We assessed the visual evoked magnetic field (VEF) using magnetoencephalography (MEG). Checkerboard pattern reversal (CPR) and monotonous grating pattern (MGP) stimulations were used. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed to analyze brain volume and g…

We utilized magnetoencephalography imaging to record brain activity during somatosensory stimulation of the breast-a body part that feels incongruent to most presurgical female-to-male (FtM)-identified transgender individuals-and the hand, a body part that feels congruent. We measure …

Recognizing an object takes just a fraction of a second, less than the blink of an eye. Applying multivariate pattern analysis, or "brain decoding", methods to magnetoencephalography (MEG) data has allowed researchers to characterize, in high temporal resolution, the emerging representation of object categories that underlie our capacity for rapid recognition. Shortly after stimulus onset, object exemplars cluster by category in a high-dimensional activation space in the brain. In this emerging activation space, the decodability of exemplar category varies over time, reflecting the brain's tra…

We used simultaneous recordings of the neuromagnetic (MEG) and electrooculogram (EOG) recordings on a pair of directly facing subjects, i.e., the sender and the observer of the eye gaze, to measure changes in the spontaneous brain activities while the observer perceives changes in eye gaze direction of the sender. The MEG signals were analyzed in the time-frequency domain to evaluate event-related changes in the spontaneous brain activities induced by the onset of eye movements. Significant increase in the gamma-band power was observed in the eye-contact condition compared to the averting cond

Recent findings have implicated thalamic alpha oscillations in the phasic modulation of cortical activity. However, the precise relationship between thalamic alpha oscillations and neocortical activity remains unclear. Here we show in a large sample of healthy human participants (n = 45) using spatial filtering techniques and measures of phase amplitude coupling that the amplitude of gamma-band activity in posterior medial parietal cortex is modulated by the phase of thalamic alpha oscillations during eyes-closed resting-state recordings. In addition, our findings show that gamma-band activity

OBJECTIVES: Severe hepatic encephalopathy gives rise to asterixis, a striking motor symptom also called flapping tremor, which is characterized by a sudden ceasing of muscle tone in all muscles of a limb. In this study, we aimed at scrutinizing the cortical activation associated with asterixis and unraveling the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We recorded simultaneously neural activity with magnetoencephalography (MEG) and muscle activity with surface EMG in nine patients with manifest hepatic encephalopathy showing asterixis. Asterixis events were detected sem…

INTRODUCTION: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a multisystem genetic disorder affecting multiple organs, including the brain, and very often associated with epileptic activity. Language acquisition and development seems to be altered in a significant proportion of patients with TSC. In the present study, we used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to investigate spatiotemporal cerebral language processing in subjects with TSC and epilepsy during a reading semantic decision task, compared to healthy control participants.
METHODS: Fifteen patients with TSC and 31 healthy subjects performed a lexico…

Variability or noise is an unmistakable feature of neural signals; however such fluctuations have been regarded as not carrying meaningful information or as detrimental for neural processes. Recent empirical and computational work has shown that neural systems with a greater capacity for information processing are able to explore a more varied dynamic repertoire, and the hallmark of this is increased irregularity or variability in the neural signal. How this variability in neural dynamics affects behavior remains unclear. Here, we investigated the role of variability of magnetoencephalography …

Steady-state visual-evoked potentials/fields (SSVEPs/SSVEFs) are used in cognitive and clinical electroencephalogram (EEG) and magnetoencephalogram (MEG) studies because of their excellent signal-to-noise ratios and relative immunity to artifact. Steady-state paradigms are also used to characterize preferred frequencies of dynamic neocortical processes. In this study, SSVEPs and SSVEFs were simultaneously recorded while subjects viewed checkerboard patterns alternating (black to white, white to black) with fixed driving frequency between 2 and 20 Hz. Distinct peaks in SSVEP/SSVEF power were ob

This case illustrates an uncommon form of symptomatic startle-induced epilepsy associated with infantile hemiplegia. Seizure semiology, neuroimaging and neurophysiological findings support involvement of the supplementary motor area in the generation of this seizure type. We present the case of an 11-year-old girl with an uncommon form of startle-induced seizures, illustrated on video-EEG, against the background of left infantile hemiplegia associated with extensive right hemispheric porencephaly but preserved cognitive functioning. The epileptic focus appears to be in the dorsolateral frontal

BACKGROUND: In patients with parkinsonian resting tremor, tremor-correlated activity in the contralateral sensorimotor cortex has been studied by both magnetoencephalography (MEG) and electroencephalography (EEG). In essential tremor, MEG failed to detect cortical involvement. The objective of this study was to investigate whether EEG recording can reveal tremor-correlated cortical activity in patients with essential tremor or enhanced physiological tremor.
METHODS: Seven patients with essential tremor and three patients with enhanced physiological tremor participated in the study. Unilateral…

Neuroimaging studies have revealed that the functional organization of reading differs between developmentally dyslexic and non-impaired individuals. However, it is not clear how early in the reading process the differences between fluent and dyslexic readers start to emerge. We studied cortical activity of ten dyslexic adults using magnetoencephalography (MEG), as they silently read words or viewed symbol-strings which were clearly visible or degraded with Gaussian noise. This method has previously been used to dissociate between analysis of local features and pre-lexical word processing in f…

A recent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study concluded that the motion-specific visual area V5 is not activated in dyslexic subjects. We report here opposing evidence based on whole-scalp neuromagnetic recordings. Apparent-motion stimuli elicited similar activation of V5 in both dyslexic and control subjects, with a trend for longer latencies in dyslexics. Both high- and low-contrast stimuli activated the V5 region in dyslexics. The lack of significant blood flow changes despite modified neuronal synchrony would explain the absence of fMRI signals and the presence of neuromagnet

Periventricular nodular heterotopia (PVNH) is a well-defined developmental disorder characterized by failed neuronal migration, which forms ectopic neuronal nodules along the ventricular walls. Previous studies mainly focus on clinical symptoms caused by the PVNH tissue, such as seizures. However, little is known about whether and how neurons in the PVNH tissue functionally communicate with neurons in the neocortex. To probe this, we applied magnetoencephalography (MEG) and stereo-electroencephalography (sEEG) recordings to patients with PVNH during resting and task states. By estimating frequ…
