Fatal iatrogenic cardiac tamponade due to central venous catheterization.

Fatal adverse events caused by any health professional as consequence of malpractice are uncommon. In this work, the authors report a fatal cardiac tamponade associated with a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) by the right jugular vein that perforated the right atrium of the heart. The diagnosis of cardiac tamponade was not detected in hospital during the intrapericardial infusion of total parenteral nutrition and was only registered during the autopsy. Diagnosing occupational disease: a new standard of care?

Is a physician civilly liable for failure to diagnose an occupational disease in his patient? Under principles of common-law tort, physicians are held to certain standards of care in treatment. When that standard is breached and a patient is injured, a negligence action may lie. Might a court find that a physician has breached that standard of care if he fails to include in his examination of thorough work history and evaluation of job exposures to toxic chemicals? A number of medical malpractice cases involving standards of care are analyzed and parallels are drawn to the occupational disease…

Burnout in orthopedic surgeons.

Burnout corresponds to a state of exhaustion (emotional, physical, mental) that can result in complete psychological and/or physical breakdown. Burnout is a result of how our society has evolved. A recent phenomenon, it affects all strata of society, all corporations, and all countries. Physicians are not immune to it, whether they are in public or private practice and whether they are residents in training or seasoned practitioners. The orthopedic world is particularly affected because of multiple risk factors such as sustained work demands, increased malpractice lawsuits, patients no longer …

Can we assess risk of psychiatric sequelae from perinatal injuries?

Medical malpractice litigation involving seven to nine figure settlements has been on the rise over the past decade. Given the life-altering scope of these incidents, forensic child psychiatrists may be asked to opine on the effects of a permanent perinatal injury on normal human development. Whether forensic child psychiatrists can assess risk of future psychiatric effects from such incidents is an important question. This paper is spurred by two separate cases, each involving a male infant having a portion of their genitals accidentally amputated by an obstetrician-gynecologist (OB/GYN) duri…
