BACKGROUND: Regional anesthetic techniques are the primary analgesic techniques in breast cancer surgery. Novel techniques include the pectoralis (PECS) block and the erector spinae plane (ESP) block.
OBJECTIVES: This study compared the analgesic efficacy of ultrasound-guided ESP and PECS-II blocks in patients undergoing unilateral modified radical mastectomy (MRM).
METHODS: The current prospective randomized controlled trial investigated 60 females scheduled for unilateral MRM under general anesthesia. The participants were randomized into two groups, namely a single-shot ESP block (n = 30)

Persistent left superior vena cava is rare and asymptomatic and is usually discovered incidentally during or after insertion of a central venous catheter. There is uncertainty as to whether or not the catheter should be removed after its malposition resulting in persistent left superior vena cava. We reported an unusual case of a breast cancer patient with a persistent left superior vena cava detected after a peripherally inserted central catheter insertion. The patient had undergone a modified radical mastectomy and needed to insert a peripherally inserted central catheter for chemotherapy. A

In order to investigate the relationship between the extent of tumor invasion and the tumor size, axillary lymph nodes metastasis, Her-2 gene overexpression, and histologic grading in breast invasive ductal carcinoma as well as the optimal extent of excision during the breast-serving surgery, the clinical data of 104 patients with breast invasive ductal carcinoma who had received modified radical mastectomy were analyzed. The correlation analysis on invasive extent, which was evaluated by serial sections at an interval of 0.5 cm from 4 different directions taking the focus as the centre, and t

OBJECTIVE: Ovarian malignancy is highly suspected when patients present with an ovarian cystic mass lesion accompanied with ascites. However, aside from the primary origin, a metastatic lesion should be considered, since the ovary is frequently metastasized from cancers of other organs, such as the genital tract, gastrointestinal tract, and breast. Herein, we report the case of a patient with a left adnexal mass and ascites to emphasize consideration of metastatic ovarian tumors from non-gynecologic organs.

Between 1975 and 1989, 535 patients with infiltrating ductal carcinoma of the breast in various clinical stages were treated by modified radical mastectomy and axillary node clearance, followed by chemotherapy, endocrine therapy or radiotherapy. Median follow-up was 3 years (5 months to 15 years). Fifty-eight local or regional recurrences occurred. The 5-year and 10-year actuarial risks of breast recurrences were 14% +/- 2% and 23% +/- 4%, respectively. Using multivariate analysis with the Cox regression model, the most important multivariate-adjusted independent contributing factors to local

INTRODUCTION: Male breast carcinoma is an uncommon malignancy, accounting for approximately 1% of all breast neoplasms. Most cases usually occur after the age of 60 and often present in advanced stages.
CASE PRESENTATION: This is a case report of a 45-year-old male who presented with a lump in his left breast along with left axillary lymphadenopathy, without any known risk factors. Fine needle aspiration cytology of the lesion showed malignant epithelial cells consistent with ductal carcinoma. Core needle biopsy was advised; however, the patient underwent a left modified radical mastectomy at

With breast cancer cases escalating globally, the risk of uncommon sequelae like cutaneous metastatic carcinoma also rises. The identification of such metastases is essential in posttreatment surveillance. A 73-year-old woman with a history of hypertension and diabetes initially presented with postmenopausal bleeding, leading to the discovery and treatment of endometrial carcinoma via hysterosalpingo-oophorectomy. Nearly a decade later, she developed bilateral breast carcinoma, confirmed via radiology and biopsies, necessitating a bilateral-modified radical mastectomy. Her postoperative phase

BACKGROUND: Paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration (PCD) is a relatively rare complication among patients with cancers with nonmetastatic tumor manifestation, including breast cancer. A breast cancer diagnosis is usually made several months (or even years) after the onset of neurological symptoms.
CASE DESCRIPTION: In this study, we describe the early diagnosis and treatment of PCD in one patient with breast cancer. The patient's first symptom was unsteady gait, followed by dizziness and dysarthria of explosive speech. Subacute progressive ataxia symptoms, weight loss, normal imaging findings

Inflammatory breast cancer is a rare and aggressive malignancy that is often initially misdiagnosed because of its similar presentation to more benign breast pathologies such as mastitis, resulting in treatment delays. Presenting symptoms of inflammatory breast cancer include erythema, skin changes such as peau d' orange or nipple inversion, edema, and warmth of the affected breast. The average age at diagnosis is younger than in noninflammatory breast cancer cases. Known risk factors include African American race and obesity. Diagnostic criteria include erythema occupying at least one-third o

Histiocytoid breast carcinoma (HBC) is a rare type of breast cancer with controversial histogenesis, which is characterized by abundant foamy cytoplasm, fuzzy cell boundary, linear or annular infiltration, eccentric large irregular nuclei or prominent nucleoli and low mitotic activity. HBC has been considered to be a variant of lobular carcinoma, a variant of apocrine ductal carcinoma, and an apocrine variant of lobular carcinoma and to resemble lipid-rich carcinoma. We presented a case of 75-year-old woman with a 5-cm mass in the left breast. The mass was yellow-beige on cut section. HBC was

Bisphosphonates (BPs) are often used for the treatment of several diseases such as osteoporosis, cancer-associated hypercalcemia, and osteolytic bone metastasis. Recently, there have been reports of osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) in cancer patients whose treatment regimens include BPs. In this case report, we describe complications and treatment of ONJ in a breast cancer patient with bone metastases who received long-term treatment with BPs. A 70-year-old woman underwent modified radical mastectomy on her left breast cancer and received oral 5-fluorouracil derivatives for 2 years in another ho

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy is not usually performed with respect to the internal mammary lymph node chain. However, the SLN may be located in the internal mammary chain, particularly with medial lesions. We carried out this study to investigate whether lymphatic mapping and SLN biopsy can detect internal mammary involvement in patients with breast cancer.
METHODS: A dye- and gamma probe-guided SLN biopsy was performed in a consecutive series of 41 patients with tumor in situ or clinical stage I or II breast cancer. After the biopsy, these patients underwent ei

Carcinoma in situ is the earliest histologically recognisable form of malignancy and as such provides an opportunity to treat the disease in a curative way. However, due to the comparative rarity of in situ breast carcinoma, there is no available information derived from controlled clinical trials. The two major variants, ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) will be considered separately as the two conditions have divergent natural histories. DCIS is increasing in incidence since microcalcification, which is a frequent accompaniment, may be detected radiological

BACKGROUND: We aimed to evaluate retrospectively the correlation of loco-regional relapse (LRR) rate, distant metastasis (DM) rate, disease free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) in a group of breast cancer (BC) patients who are at intermediate risk for LRR (T1-2 tumor and 1-3 positive axillary nodes) treated with or without postmastectomy radiotherapy (PMRT) following modified radical mastectomy (MRM).
METHODS: Ninety patients, with T1-T2 tumor, and 1-3 positive nodes who had undergone MRM received adjuvant systemic therapy with (n = 66) or without (n = 24) PMRT. Patient-related chara

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is usually associated with metastases to lungs, bones and liver. Breast carcinoma metastasizing to the gallbladder is very rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 59-year-old woman presented with bilateral synchronous breast lesions. A palpable, retroareolar solid lesion of diameter equal to 5 cm was present in the right breast, and a newly developed, non-palpable lesion with microcalcifications (diameter equal to 0.7 cm) was present in the upper outer quadrant of the left breast. Modified radical mastectomy was performed on the right breast and lumpectomy after hook-wire localiz

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the usefulness of activated carbon particles (CH40) as a vital staining dye for visualizing lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes in breast cancer.
DESIGN: A retrospective evaluation.
SETTING: Department of Surgery in Sendai National Hospital, Japan, a 716-bed teaching hospital.
METHODS: To identify as many lymph nodes as possible in the axillary fat, by which we might decrease the possibility of the presence of undetected metastatic nodes, an emulsion of activated carbon particles (CH40) was injected into the centre of the mammary gland, close to the tumour site, 3 da

PURPOSE: The prognostic significance of pathological response of primary tumor and metastatic axillary lymph nodes after neoadjuvant chemotherapy was assessed in patients with noninflammatory locally advanced breast carcinoma.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between January 1989 and April 1995, 148 consecutive patients with locally advanced breast carcinoma participated in the study. Of these, 140 fully evaluable patients (67, stage IIIA; 73, stage IIIB) were treated with three courses of 5-fluorouracil, doxorubicin, and cyclophosphamide (FAC), followed by modified radical mastectomy when technically f
