Osteomas are benign tumours characterized by proliferation of compact or cancellous bone. The most common site is the mandible, followed by the sinuses. These tumours are slow-growing, usually asymptomatic, and are generally discovered as incidental radiological findings. Osteomas occur commonly in frontal sinus, followed by the ethmoid and maxillary sinus, and very rarely in the sphenoid sinus. Symptoms arise when osteomas obstruct the ostium of the sinus or impinge on adjacent orbital or intracranial structures. Two cases of maxillary sinus osteoma are presented along with a review of the li…

BACKGROUND: Multiple chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) staging systems have been developed in an attempt to correlate symptoms with radiological imaging results. Currently, no perfect system exists. We sought to analyze the maxillary sinus (MS) using three-dimensional volumetric measurements and advanced high-resolution CT imaging.
METHODS: We reviewed MS CT scans from 50 control subjects and 50 subjects with documented CRS involving at least one MS. The following measurements were recorded: (1) volume of MS free air, (2) MS mucosal thickening, and (3) MS lateral wall bony thickness. Average Houns…

PURPOSE: Removal of antral foreign bodies after implantation is mandatory to avoid infectious processes and may be a troublesome question. Different surgical approaches could be considered, with several limitations and morbidities.
METHODS: We present a new tool (Antral Retriever) conceived to remove antral dental implants or any other migrated material through a minimally invasive canine fossa approach, under continuous endoscopic view and local anesthesia.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Antral Retriever enables the surgeon to successfully remove antral foreign bodies through a canine fossa appro

Dental implants placed in the maxilla risk failure because of the low density of the maxillary bone and the shortness of the maxillary ridge. Moreover, inadequate implant preparation, drilling or installation can easily lead to complications related to the maxillary sinuses. Displacement of dental implants into the maxillary sinus can cause serious complications, but there are few reports of such cases. The aim of this paper is to present three cases of a migrated dental implants into the maxillary sinus: in the first two cases the dental implant was found close to the medial wall of the maxil…

OBJECTIVE: To assess the preoperative value of washing cytology in maxillary sinus lesions with suspected malignancy.
STUDY DESIGN: Over a 4-year period, 96 p tients with clinical or radiologic suspicion of a malignant maxillary sinus tumor either confined to the maxillary complex or extending to the nasal cavity underwent preoperative cytologic evaluation by sinus puncture and local washing or nasal washing. Subsequently all patients underwent endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) and partial or total maxillectomy. For controls, 10 patients with rhinosinusitis, who according to standard symptoms an…

BACKGROUND: Ameloblastoma is a common odontogenic tumor of the jaws that comprises 3 variants: conventional (solid), unicystic and peripheral ameloblastomas. Unicystic ameloblastoma (UA) in the maxillary sinus is very rare. With a secondary infection, the clinical features may lead to incorrect diagnosis and treatment.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 19-year-old man was referred for the management of sinusitis and a mass at the right cheek. A few weeks earlier, the patient presented with acute cellulitis at the same area and underwent an incision and drainage in a primary care unit without any approp…

The authors describe a case of oncogenic osteomalacia due to a mesenchymal phosphaturic tumour in the maxillary sinus. This is a paraneoplastic syndrome in which a tumour produces a peptide hormone-like substance (phosphatonin) that causes a urinary loss of phosphates resulting in a debilitating systemic condition. In this case, the patient experienced muscle stiffness, reduction of muscle tone, loss of weight and pathological fractures. Clinical and radiological examination revealed a tumour in the right maxillary sinus; all other results were negative. The diagnosis following pathology exami…

AIM: The aim of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of maxillary sinus findings in elderly subjects above the age of 50 through the use of panoramic radiography and to test the hypothesis that such findings are more prevalent in dentate subjects.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: A total of 105 subjects over the age of 50 years were examined both clinically and radiographically in the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology of the Manipal College of Dental Sciences in Manipal, India, over a period of three months for various reasons. Eight were excluded due to the lack of diagnostic qu…

Maxillary sinus retention cysts are occasionally found on dental radiographs. The objective of this study was to verify the frequency of maxillary sinus retention cysts in consecutive panoramic radiographs from 173 patients (77 males, 96 females) in an orthodontic office. The chi-square test was used for statistical analysis. Ten patients (5.8%) of the total sample presented a maxillary sinus retention cyst. Males had a higher frequency (9.1%) than females (3.1%), but this difference was not significant (P>.05). Overall, the frequency of maxillary sinus retention cysts in orthodontic patients …

A 4-year-old girl presented to a medical clinic with a painless right facial swelling. The treating physician ordered a radiograph of the sinuses and received a report of "maxillary sinusitis." After appropriate antibiotic treatment, the facial swelling increased, and the mother took the child to her community pediatrician. After a period of observation and additional imaging, the diagnosis of dentigerous cyst was made. After appropriate surgical intervention, the cyst was removed, and over the ensuing 6 weeks the facial swelling gradually diminished. Dentigerous cysts, although uncommon, need…

Hypoplasia and aplasia of maxillary sinus, maxillary sinus septae, ethmomaxillary sinus, superior meatus-draining maxillary sinus, and over-pneumatization are the variations of maxillary sinuses. Findings such as uncinate process abnormality, orbital enlargement, sphenomaxillary plate, canine fossa elevation, infraorbital fissure enlargement, thickening of the sinus wall and mucosal pathologies can be seen together with these variations. The aim of this study is to determine the incidence and morphology of the anatomical variations of maxillary sinus and accompanying structures. A total of 330…

The accidental displacement of foreign bodies into the maxillary sinus is not an unusual complication in dental clinical practice. However, dental materials, and, in particular, dental impression materials, introduced into the sinus several weeks to months after a maxillary tooth extraction or dentoalveolar surgery through either a small, long-standing oroantral fistula or an insufficiently healed extraction wound is uncommon. In the case reported, 3 months after a maxillary molar extraction, the material used for maxillary impression was pushed into the antrum through a small, almost invisibl…

The maxillary sinus is universally described as a pyramidal-shaped cavity in the maxilla. Hypoplasia, which can occur unilaterally or bilaterally, is graded by the authors by the degree of failure of descent below the nasal floor in achieving its position adjacent to the posterior dentition in the adult. Unlike early studies using plain X-rays, which considered pneumatization into the zygomatic recess and dental alveolus as criteria, the authors have adopted the above-cited parameters based on computed tomography (CT) imaging, which reveals that even when smaller the sinus retains a pyramidal …

BACKGROUND: The aetiology of maxillary mucosal cysts is uncertain. Chronic rhinosinusitis has been proposed as a probable aetiological explanation for their formation.
METHOD: We recruited 500 consecutive patients who had undergone computed tomography scanning of the paranasal sinuses for possible chronic sinus disease. We identified 110 (22 per cent) cases of maxillary mucosal cysts.
RESULTS: Patients' mean age was 42.65 years, with a female to male ratio of 0.69:1 (45:65). The mean cyst size was 14.27 mm, and most were located on the inferior surface of the antrum. Only in two cases did th

We present a case of a large maxillary sinus tumor in a 6-year-old boy, immunohistologically indistinguishable from a malignant melanoma, that led to the diagnosis of Carney complex. The Carney complex is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by mucocutaneous pigmented lesions and neoplasia of multiple endocrine glands and is usually due to an inactivating mutation of the gene for the protein kinase A regulatory subunit 1A. The Carney complex has characteristic head and neck manifestations that can point to the diagnosis of this potentially lethal condition.

Fungal infections are on the increase and those of the jaw cavities with Aspergillus species may be connected with the root apices of teeth in the upper jaw. Diagnostic changes in the sinus maxillaris and certain types of facial pain may be indicative of fungal infection. The authors report a case of aspergillosis sinusitis and describe the diagnostic methods and treatment of this infection that may be associated with endodontic treatment.
