BACKGROUND: Nasotracheal intubation (NTI) is widely used in dental and maxillofacial surgeries to secure the airway while maintaining an unobstructed surgical field. However, NTI is associated with complications such as nasal bleeding, bacteremia, and retropharyngeal perforation. Among these, medical device-related pressure injuries (MDRPIs) caused by nasotracheal tubes are a significant concern. These injuries range from erythema to severe necrosis and can lead to postoperative pain, aesthetic concerns, and prolonged treatment. 3M Microfoam™ surgical tape (3MM; 3M Japan Limited, Shinagawa-ku,

AIM: The primary objective of this study was to assess the potential association between social deprivation and maxillofacial trauma in Midwest Ireland.
METHOD: A retrospective cohort study of patients undergoing surgical management of maxillofacial fractures, between January 2014 and December 2023, was undertaken. The Pobal 2022 Index utilises recent census data to determine relative deprivation of each electoral region. This database was utilised to assign patients a socioeconomic quartile ranging from Q1 (most deprived) to Q4 (most affluent) and a numerical Deprivation Index Score (DIS).

INTRODUCTION: Since March 20, 2003, maxillofacial surgeons in Iraq encounter several trauma cases, part of which are zygomatic residual deformities that result from conventional war, civil unrest, crimes, and car explosions. This study aimed to determine the relationship between etiological factors and severity of posttraumatic zygomatic residual deformity and to investigate methods of surgical repairs, treatment modalities, and any complications that may have occurred during this critical time in Iraq.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: There were a total of 40 patients with posttraumatic deformity of th

Shrapnel or gunshot injuries in Maxillofacial Region are highly considered to be challenging which leads to death in most cases, and even in the case of no mortality, they will cause morbidity and appearance impairment due to complex injuries to bone and soft tissue. Herein, in a particular case, the patient was a person injured by a gunshot of a Kalashnikovs҆ bullet in his face; the bullet was located at the end of the medial wall of the maxillary sinus and was removed through the functional endoscopy of the nose and sinuses. The bullet was removed without causing any additional incisions on

The Silverman's syndrome or "child abuse syndrome" consist in several symptomes whose about 50% are maxillo-facial ones. These which are must often unknown at the initial stage, are responsible for an after effect syndrome, involving very significant nasal, oral, labial and buccal lesions. The anomalies of facial growth are the results of chronic lesions of cartilagenous septum and of nose bone area. A better understanding of this syndrome should held to diagnose it as quickly as possible. Indeed children are endangered by a lack of protective measures.

As many as 30% of all maxillofacial fractures (MFFs) and skull base fractures (SBFs) are reported to be sports-related. Participation in sporting activities has grown worldwide and the number of cases of sports-related injuries has also increased. The aim of this study was to evaluate the data of 3596 patients hospitalized by MFF or SBF over a 6-year period; 147 (4%) of these cases were sports-related (mean age 29.7±12.8 years). The highest incidence was found in patients aged 20-29 years (35%), and the fractures resulted mostly from ball sports (74%), especially soccer (59%) and handball (8%)

High energy trauma has been considered a risk factor for blunt cerebrovascular injuries (BCVI). The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence and risk factors for BCVI specifically in patients with maxillofacial fractures in an urban level I trauma center. A retrospective cohort study of patients aged ≥ 18 years, admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) between 2007 and 2017, was implemented. There were 23,394 patients treated and entered into the MGH Trauma Registry: 22,287 sustained blunt trauma. Of the total blunt trauma patients, 68 (0.3%) had BCVI. There were 2421 patie

BACKGROUND Maxillofacial fractures represent one of the most common forms of traumatic injuries, affecting both function and aesthetics, and are associated with significant morbidity and long-term sequelae. The incidence and distribution of these fractures vary considerably depending on demographic, socioeconomic, and geographic factors. This retrospective study from a single center aimed to evaluate the presentation, imaging findings, and outcomes in 195 patients with maxillofacial fractures treated with closed reduction or open reduction with internal fixation (ORIF). BACKGROUND: Despite an increasing interest in the treatment of clavicle fractures, this is still a not yet defined area in severely injured patients as most studies exclude these patients. Analyzing fracture type and evaluate accompanying injuries can provide valuable information in an early stage of trauma care.
OBJECTIVE: To identify prevalence, fracture type and accompanying injuries of clavicle fractures in the severely injured patient.
METHODS: We included all severely injured patients (ISS ≥ 16) with a clavicle fracture from January 2007 - December 2011. We prospectively collected data

There are many reasons for hypotension in trauma patients. Life-threatening hemorrhage associated with maxillofacial trauma is considered rare. Here, we present a 25-year-old patient with maxillofacial trauma complicated by life-threatening hemorrhage after a traffic accident. At the emergency department, massive epistaxis was noted. Nasal packing and blood transfusion were performed, but vital signs of the patient were still unstable. Cerebral angiography revealed contrast extravasation from the left superficial temporal and internal maxillary arteries of the left external carotid artery. Aft

Computed tomography (CT) is the standard of care imaging in craniomaxillofacial (CMF) trauma. Despite the clear advantages of high-resolution multiplanar and three-dimensional reconstructions, which facilitate accurate diagnosis and provide intraoperative (IO) real-time visual feedback, CT's main drawbacks remain availability, cost, and high radiation exposure. The decision to perform a CT scan is based on the integration of the patient's trauma mechanism, clinical examination, subjective judgment of the CMF surgeon, and the complexity of the surgery if used IO.
