Associations between parental marital conflict and short-video addiction among Chinese adolescents: a cross-sectional chain mediation analysis of experiential avoidance and anxiety.

This cross-sectional study examined the association between parental marital conflict and short-video addiction among adolescents and assessed indirect associations involving experiential avoidance and anxiety. The Children's Perception of Interparental Conflict Scale, Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II, Generalized Anxiety Disorder-2 Scale, and Short-Video Addiction Scale were administered to 4,065 adolescents from six schools across five provinces in China. PROCESS Model 6 and 5,000 bootstrap resamples were used to test the mediation effects. (1) Parental marital conflict, experiential a

The causal impact of gut microbiota on allergic rhinitis mediated by cerebrospinal fluid metabolites: A study based on Mendelian randomization and mediation analysis.

In recent years, the role of gut microbiota (GM) in the pathogenesis of allergic diseases (ADs) has garnered increasing attention, yet the influence of the brain and its metabolites (such as cerebrospinal fluid [CSF] metabolites) remains unclear. This study aims to investigate whether GM mediates its effect on allergic rhinitis (AR) through CSF metabolites and to quantify this mediating effect, while systematically evaluating the causal relationships between brain functional networks/CSF metabolites and multiple ADs to elucidate the potential roles of brain-related factors in allergic mechanis

Timing and regimen of antiretroviral therapy and all-cause mortality in people with HIV: A time-to-event mediation analysis via opportunistic infection.

OBJECTIVES: To compare associations of antiretroviral therapy (ART) strategies with all-cause mortality and assess whether first opportunistic infection (OI) occurrence and time partly explain survival differences. METHODS: We analyzed 38,692 people with HIV in Henan Province (2015-2024). ART initiation timing and regimen were assessed, with early initiation defined as CD4+ T cell counts ≥500 cells/μL. Cox regression estimated associations with all-cause mortality and first OI. Multistate models characterized transitions to first OI and death, and time-to-event mediation analyses quantified t

Family support is important for mitigating the mental health consequences of loneliness among Black Americans at midlife: Results from a longitudinal mediation analysis.

PURPOSE: Social connectedness influences mental health, yet pathways through loneliness versus social isolation remain underexamined among Black Americans. This study examines these mediating pathways. METHODS: We analyzed longitudinal data (between 2005-2006 and 2016-2017) among Black Americans (N = 592) in the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS), Milwaukee, WI. Social connectedness was measured across six dimensions: neighborhood social cohesion, social integration, support from family, support from friends, social contribution, and community contribution. Mediators included loneliness and

The importance of social support and food insecurity in improving outcomes for perinatal depression: A causal mediation analysis of the AFFIRM-SA trial.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the mechanisms through which psychological interventions influence symptoms of perinatal depression can inform the development of interventions for improving maternal mental health. The AFFIRM-SA trial, conducted in an underserved settlement on the outskirts of Cape Town, was a task-shared psychological intervention designed to improve symptoms of perinatal depression. We aim to estimate indirect effects of mediators through which the AFFIRM-SA intervention reduced perinatal depressive symptoms. METHODS: Interventional Effects, a robust causal inference framework, wa

Smartphone-Based Intervention Targeting Norms and Risk Perception Among University Students with Unhealthy Alcohol Use: Secondary Mediation Analysis of a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Many digital interventions for unhealthy alcohol use are based on personalized normative feedback (PNF) and personalized feedback on risks for health (PFR). The hypothesis is that PNF and PFR affect drinkers' perceptions of drinking norms and risks, resulting in changes in drinking behaviors. This study is a follow-up mediation analysis of the primary and secondary outcomes of a randomized controlled trial testing the effect of a smartphone-based intervention to reduce alcohol use. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate whether perceptions of drinking norms and risks mediated …

Psychological resilience and social support as determinants of HIV-related stress in older adults living with HIV in China: a moderated mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND: This cross-sectional study investigates the relationship between social support, psychological resilience, and HIV-related stress in older adults living with HIV in China. It further explores whether psychological resilience mediates the link between social support and stress and whether living arrangements moderate this relationship. METHODS: From January to February 2024, 405 older adults aged 50 and above were selected from the outpatient Department of Infection and Immunology at Changsha Infectious Disease Hospital. Participants filled out a structured on-site questionnaire su

Serial Mediation Analysis of Psychological Inflexibility and Daytime Insomnia Rumination in the Relationship Between Dysfunctional Beliefs About Sleep and Insomnia in College Students.

Emerging research suggests that psychological inflexibility may be a factor contributing to the development and maintenance of insomnia. However, less is known about the potential cognitive pathways that may explain this relationship. In this study, we investigated the serial mediating effects of psychological inflexibility and daytime insomnia-related rumination on the association between dysfunctional beliefs and attitudes about sleep (DBAS) and insomnia symptoms. The sample included 490 college students who underwent assessments at two time points over a 1-month period. The results of our m

Do age at diagnosis, tumour thickness and tumour site explain sex differences in melanoma survival? A causal mediation analysis using cancer registry data.

Women diagnosed with melanoma have better survival than men, but little is known about potential intervention targets to reduce this survival gap by sex. We conducted a population-based study using Victorian Cancer Registry data including 5833 women and 6780 men aged 15 to 70 years when diagnosed with first primary melanoma between 2007 and 2015. Deaths to the end of 2020 were identified through linkage to the Victorian and national death registries. We estimated the effect of age at diagnosis, tumour thickness and tumour site on reducing the melanoma-specific survival gap by sex (ie, interven

A moderated serial mediation analysis of the association between HIV stigma and sleep quality in people living with HIV: a cross-sectional study.

With the wide use of antiretroviral therapy in people living with HIV (PLWH), the mortality and morbidity rates among this community are dramatically decreasing. However, sleep disorder is still one of the prominent health issues among PLWH, and it lowers their quality of life. Although we already know the potential biological pathway that links poor sleep quality among PLWH, the potential contribution of the psychosocial pathway (e.g., stigma) is far from understood. In this study, we aimed to explore the potential serial mediating effects (HIV stigma-loneliness-depression-sleep quality) and
