94 patients with malignant melanoma or soft tissue sarcoma of the extremities were submitted to isolated cytostatic limb perfusion. With palliative indication for treatment of malignant melanoma, the 5 year survival rate was 25% after perfusion with methotrexate and 50% after perfusion with melphalan. The adjuvant perfusion showed very good results, too. Furthermore, the authors report on their first experiences in regional cytostatic perfusion of soft tissue sarcoma and bone sarcoma.

The authors describe a Chinese boy presenting with recurrent retinoblastoma in combination with anterior chamber and vitreous seeding. After two cycles of intra-arterial chemotherapy combined with intracameral and intravitreal melphalan injections, the retinal tumor regressed. The seeds in the anterior chamber and vitreous body were invisible. After 12 months of follow-up, extraocular metastasis was not demonstrated and the retinal tumor was stable. The visual acuity of this patient remained 20/30.

A patient with chronic renal failure was investigated after complaining of oral discomfort which was found to be due to macroglossia and generalized involvement of the oral soft tissues by amyloidosis. A search for multiple myeloma proved to be positive. She also had a previous history of Carpal-tunnel syndrome. Despite an initial good response to treatment with phenylalanine nitrogen mustard (melphalan hydrochloride), she finally succumbed to end-stage renal failure.

Extramedullary plasmacytoma with immunoglobulin-associated amyloidosis was diagnosed in a 10-year-old cat. The primary tumor was a large, circumferential mass of the right tarsal region. Metastasis developed in the regional lymph nodes, spleen, and liver. Permanganate-resistant amyloid deposits were associated with plasma cells in the primary and metastatic tumors. Treatment with prednisone and melphalan had little effect on the progression of the disease, and the cat died four weeks later.
