Emotion causes targeted forgetting of established memories.

Reconsolidation postulates that reactivation of a memory trace renders it susceptible to disruption by treatments similar to those that impair initial memory consolidation. Despite evidence that implicit, or non-declarative, human memories can be disrupted at retrieval, a convincing demonstration of selective impairment in retrieval of target episodic memories following reactivation is lacking. In human subjects, we demonstrate that if reactivation of a verbal memory, through successful retrieval, is immediately followed by an emotionally aversive stimulus, a significant impairment is evident

Neurocognitive correlates of Food and Alcohol Disturbances: An integrated neuropsychological investigation.

Food and Alcohol Disturbance (FAD) represents a functional relationship between alcohol use and eating behaviors, in which individuals engage in disordered eating to enhance alcohol intoxication and/or compensate for alcohol-related caloric intake. FAD is highly prevalent among young adults, particularly University students. While the biopsychosocial correlates of FAD are documented, its specific neurocognitive correlates remain unexplored, despite extensive literature describing the distinct neurocognitive correlates of alcohol consumption and eating disorders. We therefore investigated wheth

Lesion-behavior mapping indicates a strategic role for parietal substrates of associative memory.

Numerous neuroimaging studies indicate that ventral parietal cortex (VPC), especially angular gyrus, plays an important role in episodic memory. However, the nature of the mnemonic processes supported by this region is far from clear. We previously found that stroke lesions in VPC and lateral temporal cortex caused deficits in cued recall of unimodal word pairs and picture pairs, and cross-modal picture-sound pairs, with larger deficits in the cross-modal task. However, those findings leave open the question whether those regions' integrity is necessary for maintenance of associative represent

Hippocampal ripples signal contextually mediated episodic recall.

High-frequency oscillatory events, termed ripples, represent synchrony of neural activity in the brain. Recent evidence suggests that medial temporal lobe (MTL) ripples support memory retrieval. However, it is unclear if ripples signal the reinstatement of episodic memories. Analyzing electrophysiological MTL recordings from 245 neurosurgical participants performing episodic recall tasks, we find that the rate of hippocampal ripples rises just prior to the free recall of recently formed memories. This prerecall ripple effect (PRE) is stronger in the CA1 and CA3/dentate gyrus (CA3/DG) subfields

Voice biomarkers as indicators of cognitive changes in middle and later adulthood.

Voice prosody measures have been linked with Alzheimer's disease (AD), but it is unclear whether they are associated with normal cognitive aging. We assessed relationships between voice measures and 10-year cognitive changes in the MIDUS national sample of middle-aged and older adults ages 42-92, with a mean age of 64.09 (standard deviation = 11.23) at the second wave. Seven cognitive tests were assessed in 2003-2004 (Wave 2) and 2013-2014 (Wave 3). Voice measures were collected at Wave 3 (N = 2585) from audio recordings of the cognitive interviews. Analyses controlled for age, education, depr

Memory for neutral, emotional and trauma-related information in sexual abuse survivors.

Previous studies have shown that trauma-exposed individuals, including survivors of sexual abuse, show inferior performance in episodic memory tasks compared to non-exposed controls. This, however, has mainly been tested using neutral content. Our goal in this study was to determine whether this relative impairment in episodic memory extends to generally emotional and trauma-related content. Twenty-seven sexual abuse survivors and 27 control women participated in the study. They listened to stories with three content types (neutral, generally emotional and trauma-related) and performed a free-

Cognitive decline and brain amyloid-β accumulation across 3 years in adults with Down syndrome.

Adults with Down syndrome (DS) have a high incidence of Alzheimer's disease (AD), providing a unique opportunity to explore the early, preclinical stages of AD neuropathology. We examined change in brain amyloid-β accumulation via the positron emission tomography tracer [11C] Pittsburgh compound B (PiB) across 2 data collection cycles, spaced 3 years apart, and decline in cognitive functioning in 58 adults with DS without clinical AD. PiB retention increased in the anterior cingulate gyrus, precuneus cortex, parietal cortex, and anterior ventral striatum. Across the 2 cycles, 14 (27.5%) partic

The Proactive Self in Space: How Egocentric and Allocentric Spatial Impairments Contribute to Anosognosia in Alzheimer's Disease.

In addition to impairments in episodic and spatial memory, anosognosia (i.e., loss of awareness of the deficient aspect of own cognitive functioning) may be considered an important cognitive marker of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, although a growing body of interesting models have been proposed to explain this early symptom, what is still missing is a unifying framework of all the characteristic signs occurring in patients with AD that may guide the search for its causal neuropathological process and, ultimately, the etiological process. This contribution will first show how anosognosia m

Effects of an ambient odor on brain activations during episodic retrieval of objects.

This study investigated the brain areas involved in episodic memory retrieval of pictures depending on the characteristics of the contextual environment during encoding (i.e. presence or absence of an odor). In the first stage, subjects were presented with a series of 32 pictures. Half of the pictures were presented while the subjects smelled an odor (vanillin). No particular odor was associated with the presentation of the other half of the pictures. Two weeks later, a retrieval task was performed in which the same pictures were presented during an fMRI session but without any odor associatio

[Relationship between memory disorders and self-consciousness in Alzheimer's disease].

Episodic memory deficits are almost always the first cognitive impairment in Alzheimer disease (AD). AD is also characterized by a loss of self-awareness. The aim of this article is to give an interpretation of AD patients' episodic impairments through the study of the relationship between memory and the self. Using the Remember/Know paradigm associated with the self-reference effect and emotional valence, we showed that this relationship may be impaired in AD. On the one hand, this could explain AD patients' difficulty accessing autonoetic consciousness, that is to say mentally bring back eve

Growing Up with Asperger's Syndrome: Developmental Trajectory of Autobiographical Memory.

Autobiographical memory (AM) and social cognition share common properties and both are affected in autism spectrum disorders (ASD). So far, most of the scant research in ASD has concerned adults, systematically reporting impairment of the episodic component. The only study to be conducted with children concluded that they have poorer personal semantic knowledge than typical developing children. The present study explores the development of both components of AM in an 8-year-old boy diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, based on three examinations in 2007, 2008, and 2010. On each occasion, he und

Interactive effect of apolipoprotein e genotype and age on hippocampal activation during memory processing in healthy adults.

CONTEXT: Although the apolipoprotein E (APOE) ϵ4 allele is a major genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer disease, its effect on hippocampal function during episodic memory is controversial because studies have yielded mixed results. The age of the studied cohorts may contribute to this apparent inconsistency: activation for ϵ4 carriers tends to be increased in studies of older adults but decreased in some studies of younger adults. Consistent with differential age effects, research in transgenic mice suggests that the ϵ4 allele may particularly affect the aging process. OBJECTIVE: To d

Modern scores for traditional tests - Review of the diagnostic potential of scores derived from word list learning tests in mild cognitive impairment and early Alzheimer's Disease.

Episodic memory impairment is one of the early hallmarks in Alzheimer's Disease. In the clinical diagnosis and research, episodic memory impairment is typically assessed using word lists that are repeatedly presented to and recalled by the participant across several trials. Until recently, total learning scores, which consist of the total number of words that are recalled by participants, were almost exclusively used for diagnostic purposes. The present review aims at summarizing evidence on additional scores derived from the learning trials which have recently been investigated more frequentl

Biomarker-guided neuromodulation aids memory in traumatic brain injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of cognitive disability in adults, often characterized by marked deficits in episodic memory and executive function. Prior studies have found that direct electrical stimulation of the temporal cortex yielded improved memory in epilepsy patients, but it is not clear if these results generalize to patients with a specific history of TBI. Here we asked whether applying closed-loop, direct electrical stimulation to lateral temporal cortex could reliably improve memory in a TBI cohort. Among a larger group of patients undergoing neurosurgical evaluati

Thinking about it: the impact of COVID-19-related stimuli on prospective memory.

BACKGROUND: Since 2020, information regarding COVID-19 has been a constant presence in the news, in our conversations and thoughts. Continuous exposure to this type of stimuli could have an impact on cognitive processes essential for our everyday activities, such as prospective memory (PM). PM is the ability to remember to perform an intention at a specific point in the future, like remembering to take prescribed medicines at a specific time or to turn off the stove after cooking. Do COVID-related stimuli affect our ability to perform a PM task? METHODS: To answer this question, we proposed a

Remembering Molly: Immediate and delayed false memory formation after acute MDMA exposure.

The entactogen 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) is increasingly being recognized for its therapeutic potential but is also widespread in nightlife settings where it may co-occur with crime. Since previous research detected impaired verbal memory during acute MDMA intoxication, understanding the drug's ramifications in an applied legal context becomes crucial. We conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to examine acute and delayed effects of MDMA (75 mg) on false memory in 60 healthy volunteers with a history of MDMA use, using three well-established false memory methods: a b

A transient effect of episodic simulation in repeated decision-making.

Deciding what activities to engage in on a given day recruits multiple cognitive processes, including the episodic memory system. One of the ways in which the episodic memory system supports daily decision-making is by episodic simulation, allowing us to pre-experience prospective activities. Prior work has shown that episodic simulation can increase the likelihood that one engages in an activity in the future but has not tested whether this increased likelihood is consistent across repeated choices or whether it depends on what is being simulated. Thus, the goal of the present study was to fi

Distinct brain activity patterns associated with traditional Chinese medicine syndromes: a task-fMRI study of mild cognitive impairment.

BACKGROUND: Abnormalities in brain activity patterns during episodic memory tasks have been inconsistently reported in amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) patients using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). This study applied traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome differentiation to categorize aMCI patients into distinct subgroups, aiming to clarify the neural mechanisms underlying their cognitive profiles. METHODS: Participants included aMCI patients categorized into the turbid phlegm clouding the orifices (PCO) or spleen-kidney deficiency (SKD) syndrome subgroups, alongs

The quantity and quality of cardiovascular fat at mid-life and future cognitive performance among women: The SWAN cardiovascular fat ancillary study.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular fat is a novel risk factor that may link to dementia. Fat volume and radiodensity are measurements of fat quantity and quality, respectively. Importantly, high fat radiodensity could indicate healthy or adverse metabolic processes. METHODS: The associations of cardiovascular fat (including epicardial, paracardial, and thoracic perivascular adipose tissue [PVAT]) quantity and quality assessed at mean age of 51 with subsequent cognitive performance measured repeatedly over 16 years of follow-up were examined using mixed models among 531 women. The role of decision-making in cannabis-related problems among young adults.

BACKGROUND: Deficits in decision-making and episodic memory are often reported among heavy cannabis users, yet little is known on how they influence negative consequences from cannabis use. Individual differences in decision-making may explain, in part, why some individuals experience significant problems from their cannabis use whereas others do not. We hypothesized that poor decision-making would moderate relationships between amount of cannabis use and problems from cannabis use whereas episodic memory performance would not. METHOD: Young adult cannabis users (n=52) with cannabis as their
