Choline is an essential nutrient required for early development. Previous studies have shown that prenatal choline availability influences adult memory abilities depending on the medial temporal lobe integrity. The relevance of prenatal choline availability on object recognition memory was assessed in adult Wistar rats. Three groups of pregnant Wistar rats were fed from E12 to E18 with choline-deficient (0 g/kg choline chloride), standard (1.1 g/kg choline chloride), or choline-supplemented (5 g/kg choline chloride) diets. The offspring was cross-fostered to rat dams fed a standard diet during

Recent work has added strong support to the long-standing hypothesis that the stabilization of both long-term potentiation and memory requires rapid reorganization of the spine actin cytoskeleton. This development has led to new insights into the origins of cognitive disorders, and raised the possibility that a diverse array of memory problems, including those associated with diabetes, reflect disturbances to various components of the same mechanism. In accord with this argument, impairments to long-term potentiation in mouse models of Huntington's disease and in middle-aged rats have both bee

OBJECTIVE: Long-term memory deficits are often seen in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Recently, studies showed that patients with hippocampal sclerosis (HS) type 2, which presents with severe neuron loss in CA1 only, performed within the normal range. However, up to 30% of HS type 2 cases have memory deficits. As insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is related to neurogenesis and memory performance, we sought to investigate a possible link between the expression of IGF-1 receptor (IGF-1R) and verbal memory performance among patients with HS type 2.
METHODS: We selected 21 patient

Although research indicates that hightened glucocorticoid levels impair long-term memory functions and may inhibit traumatic memory retrieval in humans, the impact of acutely elevated glucocorticoid levels on learning and attentional functions is still unclear. Furthermore, the effect of glucocorticoids on executive functions as well as the recovery from long-term memory deficits is insufficiently studied. The present study examined memory functions in patients with acute exacerbation of neurological diseases (multiple sclerosis, acute optic neuritis), who were treated with a high dose of gluc

Recent computational and behavioral studies suggest that motor adaptation results from the update of multiple memories with different timescales. Here, we designed a model-based functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiment in which subjects adapted to two opposing visuomotor rotations. A computational model of motor adaptation with multiple memories was fitted to the behavioral data to generate time-varying regressors of brain activity. We identified regional specificity to timescales: in particular, the activity in the inferior parietal region and in the anterior-medial cerebellum

We studied verbal and visual short term memory, learning capabilities and long term retention in a sample of 96 patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD) and 42 controls matched by sex, age, years of education and verbal intelligence. We found significant differences between groups in visual short term memory and verbal learning, but not in verbal short term memory and long term retention. Performance in visual short term memory and learning correlated with the severity of disease and motor performance. Forty-one per cent of patients had impairment in visual short term memory, and this impairment

Elevated prefrontal cortex activity is often observed in healthy older adults despite declines in their memory and other cognitive functions. According to one view, this activity reflects a compensatory functional posterior-to-anterior shift, which contributes to maintenance of cognitive performance when posterior cortical function is impaired. Alternatively, the increased prefrontal activity may be less efficient or less specific because of structural and neurochemical changes accompanying aging. These accounts are difficult to distinguish on the basis of average activity levels within brain

Memory impairment is a prominent defining feature of Alzheimer's disease (AD), yet the degree to which the profile of memory impairment is uniform across patients is not fully resolved. The study examined patterns of memory impairment in a large cohort of AD patients, with particular attention to the relationship between working and long-term declarative memory. Tests of working memory, visual and verbal recall and recognition, and recent personal memory were administered to 67 AD patients in the early to moderate stages of disease and to 30 age-matched controls. Performance on all measures wa

Adaptation learning is crucial to maintain precise motor control in face of environmental perturbations. Although much progress has been made in understanding the psychophysics and neurophysiology of sensorimotor adaptation (SA), the time course of memory consolidation remains elusive. The lack of a reproducible gradient of memory resistance using protocols of retrograde interference has even led to the proposal that memories produced through SA do not consolidate. Here, we pursued an alternative approach using resting-state fMRI to track changes in functional connectivity (FC) induced by lear

Impairment of reconsolidation of conditioned food aversion memory led to the development of a specific anterograde amnesia: repeated training of amnestic snails did not induce long-term memory formation. DNA demethylation caused by injections of DNA methyltransferase inhibitor (DNAMT) during repeated training led to long-term memory formation. Injections of an NMDA glutamate receptor antagonist or a serotonin receptor antagonist prevented memory formation induced by administration of DNAMT inhibitor and repeated training. We hypothesize that methylation-dependent repression of neuronal genes u

The medial temporal lobe was identified as an important neural structure in human memory by the advent of patient H.M., who suffered from severe amnesia caused by bilateral medial temporal lobectomy. Dozens of neuropsychological study of H.M. led to the classification of human memory into declarative and non-declarative memory, as well as short-term and long-term memory. The medial temporal lobe subserves declarative memory and long-term memory. It also plays an important role especially in the process of memory consolidation. The psychological and neurological mechanisms of the consolidation

Declarative long-term memories are not created in an instant. Gradual stabilization and temporally shifting dependence of acquired declarative memories in different brain regions-called systems consolidation-can be tracked in time by lesion experiments. The observation of temporally graded retrograde amnesia (RA) following hippocampal lesions points to a gradual transfer of memory from hippocampus to neocortical long-term memory. Spontaneous reactivations of hippocampal memories, as observed in place cell reactivations during slow-wave-sleep, are supposed to drive neocortical reinstatements an

Microtubule-associated Protein 6 (MAP6) is critical for maintaining microtubule stability and synaptic plasticity, and its dysfunction is a key driver of cognitive impairment. However, the molecular mechanisms linking MAP6 deletion to cognitive deficits remain unclear. Here, we generated a novel Map6 knockout (KO, Map6-/-) mouse model using CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing. Behavioral tests confirmed that Map6-/- mice exhibited prominent cognitive impairments, primarily in long-term memory and spatial learning. Hippocampal transcriptome profiling identified marked downregulation of neuroten

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cognitive and motor decline. Early detection remains challenging, as traditional neuroimaging and neuropsychological assessments often fail to capture subtle, preclinical changes. Recent advances in digital health and artificial intelligence (AI) offer new opportunities to identify non-invasive biomarkers of cognitive impairment. In this study, we propose an AI-driven framework for early AD based on handwriting motion data captured using a sensor-integrated Smart Pen. The system employs an inertial measuremen

The Timed Up and Go (TUG) test is widely used for mobility assessment, but its clinical utility is limited by reliance on total completion time alone. Detailed analysis of constituent subtasks can provide richer insights into functional impairments. This study proposes a Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) network with multilabel classification for robust activity segmentation of the Instrumented TUG (iTUG) test using a single lumbar-mounted IMU. Data from 105 participants (79 healthy across three age groups and 26 with gait-affecting pathologies) were collected. The model achieved a

BACKGROUND: Solar irradiance is a nonlinear and intermittent function, which makes accurate forecasting of solar power generation a challenge. The high variability of meteorological conditions is not well represented by conventional atmospheric models, thus hampering forecasting skill and model robustness. In this work, an advanced hybridization of multi-population cuckoo search (HMPCS) algorithm with machine learning (ML) methods is developed to enhance the predicated performance of photovoltaic (PV) power forecasting with more reliability.
METHODS: In this study, a hybrid modeling framework

Accurate continuous prediction of lower-limb joint angles from surface electromyography (sEMG) remains challenging because of the nonlinear, non-stationary, and subject-specific nature of sEMG signals, which can reduce robustness and lead to degraded prediction accuracy during highly dynamic gait phases. In this study, we propose RTGNet, a dual-branch deep learning framework for lower-limb joint-angle prediction from multichannel sEMG. The method constructs two feature views from the same sEMG stream: recurrence-plot (RP)-based representations for nonlinear texture characterization and time-se

Several lines of evidence have shown that platelet-derived factors are key molecules in brain-body communication in pathological conditions. Here, we identify platelets as key actors in the modulation of fear behaviors in mice through the control of inhibitory neurotransmission and plasticity in the hippocampus. Interfering with platelet number or activation reduces hippocampal serotonin (5-HT) and modulates fear learning and memory in mice, and this effect is reversed by serotonin replacement by serotonin precursor (5-HTP)/benserazide. In addition, we unravel that natural killer (NK) cells pa

Research into memory mechanisms has predominantly centered on adult male rodents, often overlooking the influences of sex and developmental stage. Memory processes vary significantly between juveniles and adults, with sex acting as a critical determinant. Oxytocin (OXT) has emerged as a key modulator of fear responses and extinction in a sex-dependent manner, with prepubertal females displaying OXT-dependent contextual extinction patterns akin to adult males. These differences likely stem from diverse trajectories of hippocampal and prefrontal cortex maturation. This study examines the CA1 reg

Visual search is speeded when a target is repeatedly presented in an invariant scene context of nontargets (contextual cueing), demonstrating observers' capability for using statistical long-term memory (LTM) to make predictions about upcoming sensory events, thus improving attentional orienting. In the current study, we investigated whether expectations arising from individual, learned environmental structures can encompass multiple target locations. We recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) while participants performed a contextual cueing search task with repeated and non-repeated spatial
