Effect of oral contraceptives intake on postural stability in young healthy women throughout the menstrual cycle.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of oral contraceptives on static postural stability in young healthy women during their menstrual cycle. Twenty-three women with the regular menstrual cycle, using or not using oral contraceptives, participated in this study. Salivary progesterone and estradiol levels were measured during one menstrual cycle. Measurements of balance were performed during a quiet stance on a firm and foam surface by the force platform, with eyes either opened or closed, on day 2, 7, 14, 21 and 28 of the cycle. Results of stability on a firm surface with eye…

Myths and Methodologies: Reducing scientific design ambiguity in studies comparing sexes and/or menstrual cycle phases.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the topic of this review? We review methodological considerations for the inclusion of women in sex and menstrual cycle phase comparison studies. What advances does it highlight? Improving the methodological design for studies exploring sex differences, menstrual cycle phase differences and/or endogenous versus exogenous female sex hormones will help to close the gap in our understanding of the effects of endogenous and exogenous hormones on exercise science and sports medicine outcomes. ABSTRACT: In recent years, the increase in scientific literature exploring sex diffe…

Normative Values of Voice Analysis Parameters With Respect to Menstrual Cycle in Healthy Adult Turkish Women.

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: Objective measurements are quite important for assessment of voice disorders. The first aim of this study was to establish a prototype database of normative values of voice analysis parameters in healthy Turkish adult female population. The second aim was to evaluate the variations of these parameters during physiological menstrual cycle. STUDY DESIGN: This is a prospective, single-blind study. METHODS: Eighty-nine healthy women (mean age, 31.5 ± 6.0 years) with normal physical findings and without vocal abuse or dysphonia were participated. Detailed physical and videos…

Sexual activity modulates shifts in TH1/TH2 cytokine profile across the menstrual cycle: an observational study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate if sexual activity moderated menstrual cycle-related shifts in cytokines associated with T-helper type 1 (TH1) cells (e.g., interferon [IFN] γ) and T-helper type 2 (TH2) cells (e.g., interleukin [IL] 4). Immune activity shifts across the menstrual cycle, with higher follicular-phase TH1-cell activity but higher luteal-phase TH2-cell activity. Little is known about how social behaviors alter TH1-TH2 ratios, despite evidence that psychosocial factors can influence immunity. Of particular interest is how sexual activity influences immune responses that may support concep…

Acute pre-learning stress and declarative memory: impact of sex, cortisol response and menstrual cycle phase.

This study explores the influence of pre-learning stress on performance on declarative memory tasks in healthy young adults in relation to sex and menstrual cycle phase. The sample was composed of 119 students (32 men and 87 women) from 18 to 25 years of age. The women were tested in different hormonal stages (30 in follicular phase, 34 in luteal phase, and 23 using oral contraceptives). The participants were exposed to the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) or a control condition. Afterwards, their memory performance was measured using a standardized memory test (Rey's Auditory Verbal Learning T…

Oral contraceptive pill use and menstrual cycle phase are associated with altered resting state functional connectivity.

At rest, brain activity can be characterized not by an absence of organized activity but instead by spatially and temporally correlated patterns of activity. In this experiment, we investigated whether and to what extent resting state functional connectivity is modulated by sex hormones in women, both across the menstrual cycle and when altered by oral contraceptive pills. Sex hormones have been shown to have important effects on task-related activity, but few studies have investigated the extent to which they can influence the behavior of functional networks at rest. These hormones are dramat…

The effect of premenstrual dysphoric disorder and menstrual cycle phase on brain activity during response inhibition.

BACKGROUND: Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) has generally not been associated with impulsive behavior. However, some studies suggest that women with PMDD have higher impulsivity scores than healthy controls and that brain activity during response inhibition may vary across the menstrual cycle. Therefore, our aim was to unravel potentially important cognitive aspects of PMDD by investigating brain activity during response inhibition in women with PMDD and healthy controls in relation to menstrual cycle phase. METHODS: Fourteen PMDD patients and 13 healthy controls performed a Go/NoGo ta…

Human 2D (index) and 4D (ring) digit lengths: their variation and relationships during the menstrual cycle.

It is known that there are sexually dimorphic differences in relative and absolute lengths of the index (2nd) and ring (4th) fingers and that the sizes of laterally-paired soft tissues (e.g. ears and fingers) show changes across the menstrual cycle. The aim of the present study was to determine whether cyclical changes in the digit lengths of the index and ring fingers also occur and, if so, to what extent these are related to changing patterns of circulating sex steroids. Digit lengths were assessed over two cycles in groups of right-handed females (19-21 years of age) who were divided on the…

Influence of menstrual cycle, parity and oral contraceptive use on steroid hormone receptors in normal breast.

Steroid receptor was assessed immunohistochemically in 158 samples of normal breast for variation through the menstrual cycle. Patterns and intensity of reaction were used in a semi-quantitative scoring system to examine the influence of cycle phase, cycle type, parity and age. The changes in oestrogen receptor for natural cycle and oral contraceptive (OC) cycles indicated down-regulation by progestins. Progesterone receptor did not vary significantly in natural cycles, but increased steadily through OC cycles. This study provides strong evidence that both oestrogen and progesterone influence …

[LH, FSH and ovarian steroids in serum during normal menstrual cycles and cycles with corpus luteum insufficiency in the human female (author's transl)].

LH, FSH, estradiol-17beta, progesterone, 20alpha-dihydroprogesterone, 17alpha-hydroxyprogesterone, delta4-androstenedione and testosterone are determined by radioimmunoassay in serum daily during 11 menstrual cycles. Three of them had to be considered as cycles with corpus luteum insufficiency on the basis of basal body temperature, length of the luteal phase and the pattern of progesterone concentration in serum. One woman conceived during the investigated cycle. The present concepts of the regulation of ovulation are discussed on the basis of the chronological relationshp of changing endocri…

Estrogen induces premature luteal regression in rhesus monkeys during spontaneous menstrual cycles, but not in cycles driven by exogenous gonadotropin-releasing hormone.

Administration of exogenous estradiol during the mid- to late luteal phase of the menstrual cycle results in premature regression of the corpus luteum. The present study was initiated to identify the site of action of estrogen as well as to determine why administration of estrogen during the early luteal phase of the menstrual cycle does not result in luteolysis. Based upon extant literature, we hypothesized that estrogen and progesterone synergize to promote premature luteal regression. We tested this hypothesis in intact, spontaneously cycling rhesus monkeys by inserting estradiol, progester…

Follicular development during the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle: the enigma of luteinizing hormone receptor function.

BACKGROUND: The luteinizing hormone receptor (LHR) plays a pivotal role in regulating human follicular development and steroidogenesis through temporal and cell-specific expression on theca (TCs) and granulosa cells (GCs). Although LH-like activity (i.e., LH and/or human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG)) has long been incorporated into ovarian stimulation (OS) regimens, its precise physiological role in human folliculogenesis remains poorly defined. Recent large randomised clinical trials (RCT) have failed to demonstrate a consistent benefit of exogenous LH-like activity during OS, suggesting inco

Non-concussive impacts, cognition, and the menstrual cycle: a proof-of-concept study of elite female footballers.

Evidence indicates females may be more susceptible to sports-related concussion with worse and prolonged symptom severity according to menstrual cycle phase. We investigated whether menstrual cycle phases influence non-concussive heading kinematics in elite female footballers, and whether these impacts affect an athlete's cognition. Five eumenorrheic elite female footballers (Mage = 23 ± 4 years) participated in a 16-week proof-of-concept study wherein menstrual cycle phases were tracked, and cognition was monitored. Participants performed a weekly controlled heading drill by heading a ball th…

The influence of menstrual cycle phase on neuromuscular performance and subjective perception of effort in elite football players.

This study aimed to investigate the potential fluctuations in neuromuscular performance and subjective perception of effort during three different phases of the menstrual cycle. Fifteen elite female football players (age: 23.47 ± 6.14) volunteered to participate in the study. Tympanic temperature, saliva hormone measurement, urine concentration of the luteinizing hormone and a calendar tracker were used to verify the following phases of the menstrual cycle: early follicular phase (EFP), late follicular phase (LFP), and mid-luteal phase (MLP). For each phase, mean concentric velocity and the ra…

The influence of menstrual cycle and endometriosis on endometrial expression of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related genes.

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis is a common chronic gynaecological disorder related to the presence of ectopic foci of endometrial-like tissue, mostly in the pelvic cavity. Pathogenesis of this disease may be associated with epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), a phenomenon defined by morphological and functional changes from epithelial to mesenchymal cell phenotype. The role of EMT in the development of endometriotic lesions remains poorly understood. There is also little known about the role of EMT in the eutopic endometrium in course of the menstrual cycle. Therefore, the present study was…
