Can cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers tell us something about financial capacity in Alzheimer's disease patients? A preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Although diagnostic markers in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) have become a rapidly growing research field, they have not as yet been investigated in relation to capacities that are of interest to geriatric psychiatry and neuropsychology, such as financial capacity. The aim of this study was to assess whether CSF biomarkers can predict financial capacity in patients with a diagnosis of major neurocognitive disorder due to Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHODS: Participants were examined with a number of neuropsychological tests, with an emphasis on the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE),

Child Psychiatry Consultation Clinic for Pediatricians: Long-Term Outcomes.

There is an urgent need for new clinical models to improve access to child mental health care. Pediatricians are tasked to care for youth with mild to moderate mental health problems, but require additional training. This article describes an outpatient child psychiatry consultation clinic (CPC) designed to empower pediatricians to care for youth with depression, anxiety, and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Over a 2-year period, 40 primary care physicians (PCPs) referred 159 patients to the CPC. The most common primary diagnoses of patients seen for consultation were generalized anxi

Operationalization of the updated diagnostic algorithm for classifying HIV-related cognitive impairment and dementia.

BACKGROUND: This study applies the updated HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Disorders (HAND) diagnostic algorithm. METHODS: Participants were 210 HIV-infected-adults, classified using proposed HAND criteria: HIV-Associated Dementia (HAD), Mild Neurocognitive Disorder (MND), Asymptomatic Neurocognitive Impairment (ANI). RESULTS: The algorithm yielded: normal = 32.8%, ANI = 21.4%, MND = 34.3%, and HAD = 11.4%. Normal participants performed superior to HAND-defined participants on cognition, and HAD participants performed more poorly on global cognition and executive functioning. Two distinct subg

Transsexualism or the gender dysphoria syndromes.

Professional, patient and media forces tend to oversimplify the complexity of the gender dysphoria syndrome. Because sex reassignment surgery may be helpful to some patients with the syndrome and harmful to others, mental health professionals need to competently perform differential diagnoses of both the gender disorder and the associated psychopathologies. This frequently involves distinctions between subtle forms of psychosis, character pathologies of varying severity, and major developmental problems. Surgery should not be considered the only, or the best, treatment for the syndrome. Contra

Impact of Yoga on Spinal Mobility and Psychological Outcomes in Patients with Axial Spondyloarthritis: A Prospective Non-randomized Controlled Study.

Exercise is a key non-pharmacological component of therapy in axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA). Evidence for yoga as a mind-body intervention remains limited. This study aimed to assess the effects of an 8-week yoga program on mobility, function, disease activity, activity-related competences, and psychological outcomes in axSpA compared with physiotherapy and healthy individuals. We conducted a prospective, non-randomized, study (University Hospital Erlangen, May 2021-January 2024). AxSpA patients participated either in weekly yoga sessions for 8 weeks (approximately 60 min; online format) or

Re-imaging the intentional stance.

The commonly used paradigm to investigate Dennet's 'intentional stance' compares neural activation when participants compete with a human versus a computer. This paradigm confounds whether the opponent is natural or artificial and whether it is intentional or an automaton. This functional magnetic resonance imaging study is, to our knowledge, the first to investigate the intentional stance by orthogonally varying perceptions of the opponents' intentionality (responding actively or passively according to a script) and embodiment (human or a computer). The mere perception of the opponent (whethe

Transient psychosis in an immune-competent patient after oral trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole administration.

We describe a rare adverse reaction to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX; Septra, Bactrim) in an immune-competent female adolescent. She was prescribed TMP-SMX for a urinary tract infection, which she had developed while being treated in the hospital for an extensive leg cellulitis. Shortly after receiving her third dose of TMP-SMX, she developed an acute altered mental status with agitation as well as vivid visual and auditory hallucinations. After prompt discontinuation of TMP-SMX, the patient slowly began to improve and was able to return to her baseline mental status within 10 days. N

Telehealth Competencies to Ensure Health Care Access, Quality, and Equity for Older Adults: A Scoping Review.

Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, increased use of telehealth expanded access to health care for older adults. Many clinicians and health systems adjusted workflows and realized that certain competencies are needed to fully engage older adults in telehealth services. This scoping review evaluates the approaches needed to educate clinicians about providing telehealth services to older adults. Methods: We conducted a review of studies published from January 2000 through February 2024 by using the 6-stage scoping review process. Searches of PubMed/MEDLINE and five other databases included

Moving from tradition-based to competence-based psychotherapy.

Current education and training in psychological interventions is mostly based on different 'schools' (traditions such as cognitive-behavioural or psychodynamic therapy), and strong identification with these specific traditions continuously hinders a scientifically based development of psychotherapy. This review is selective rather than systematic and comprehensive. In addition to the consideration of other influential publications, we relied on a literature search in Web of Science using the following terms (update: 24 December 2020): (psychotherapy AND meta-analy* AND competence*). Mental disorders and osteoporosis treatment in patients with hip fracture-a Danish population-based cohort study.

UNLABELLED: Using Danish registries, we identified 57,887 patients with hip fracture aged ≥ 65 without recent anti-osteoporosis medication (AOM) and examined whether mental disorders affect AOM initiation after hip fracture. One-year initiation ranged from 6.5 to 17.0% among patients with mental disorders compared to 21% in patients without mental disorder. Initiation remains suboptimal, highlighting required targeted interventions. PURPOSE: To evaluate the impact of mental disorders on the initiation of anti-osteoporosis medication (AOM) following hip fracture. METHODS: Using Danish medical

Cognitive fitness modulates gender differences in sleep and mental health among competitive athletes under chronic stress.

Objectives: Mental fitness is increasingly considered a key component of an athlete's competitive arsenal. Active domains of mental fitness include cognitive fitness, sleep, and mental health; and these domains can differ between men and women athletes. Our study investigated the associations of cognitive fitness and gender to sleep and mental health, and the interaction between cognitive fitness and gender on sleep and mental health, in competitive athletes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: 82 athletes competing at levels from regional/state to international (49% women, M-age = 23.3 year
