In 23 hypothyroid children--15 girls and 8 boys--all of them receiving continuous substitution therapy, skeletal maturity was evaluated by use of a specific point system. The examination of 106 X-rays of the left hand revealed a clear-cut carpal retardation more than that of RUS (radius, ulna, short bones) in both sexes. It could be demonstrated a higher stage of development for RUS than carpal bone maturity in relation to height, independent of duration of therapy. A closer correspondence between RUS development and height may be assumed.

Radiologic bone lesions in 20 long-term hemodialyzed patients with chronic renal failure are described. During chronic dialysis the bone lesions increased. Treatment of 8 patients with 1 alpha-OH-D3 for 6 months prevented progression of the bone lesions or improved them.

Bone status and fracture rates were evaluated in two Yugoslav populations with very different dietary habits. In district A (Podravina) the daily calcium intake was about twice that in district B (Istra). There were similar but smaller differences in the intakes of other nutrients. Mechanical sensory blocking effects in the metacarpi of rams were compared following perineural injection of saline, 2% lidocaine (LIDO), 0.5% bupivacaine (BUPI), and a 1:1 (volume/volume) mixture of LIDO-BUPI. The purpose of this study is to analyse three different lengthening techniques used in 31 small bones for congenital malformations of the hand and foot: 15 metacarpals, 12 metatarsals, 1 foot stump and 3 spaces between a previously transplanted phalanx end of the carpus or the metacarpal. The use of intramedullary wires for fixation of fractures of the metacarpal and proximal phalanx in our hospital was reviewed. Twenty-six patients with 26 metacarpal fractures and four proximal phalangeal fractures were treated using this technique from 1993 to 1998. We reviewed data from 57 patients (40 women) with Klippel-Feil syndrome to identify and characterize limb deficiencies. The cervical synostosis was classified according to the description of Feil (1919). Limb deficiencies were classified according to Henkel et al.
