OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine low molecular weight (LMW)-DNA fragmentation changes after white blood cell (WBC) incubation in lysis buffer followed by constant-field gel electrophoresis (CFGE). WBCs were isolated from blood samples of workers highly exposed to asbestos fibres at the workplace in Germany, and were compared with those from healthy adults. This study was conducted parallel to the study presented in our preceding paper (Marczynski et al. 2000b) in which we described significant increases in the levels of 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) adducts in the DNA o

Lahav, Milstein, and co-workers reported that the complex [(bpy)Rh(hd)](+)PF(6)(-) (bpy = substituted bipyridine ligand, hd = 1,5-hexadiene) shows catalytic activity in the hydrogenation of acetone (Töllner, K. et al. Science 1997, 278, 2100). The activity in an ordered monolayer was found to be dramatically greater than in solution. We used the DFT functional mPW1K (Lynch, B. J. et al. J. Phys. Chem. A 2000, 104, 4811) to investigate the mechanism of the homogenous reaction. The suitability of the mPW1K functional was verified by coupled cluster calculations on a model system. Bulk solvent ef

A series of 100 lead workers from different industries, 91 at work and nine admitted to hospital with lead poisoning, was studied in order to define more clearly the clinical and biochemical criteria of lead poisoning in three stages—(A) a presymptomatic state of lead exposure (37 men), (B) a state of mild symptoms or mild anaemia (45 men), and (C) frank lead poisoning with severe symptoms and signs (18 men). The tests used were haemoglobin, reticulocyte count, and blood lead, and urinary lead, coproporphyrin, δ-aminolaevulinic acid (ALA), and porphobilinogen (PBG) estimations. Of these, the u

This paper examines basic aspects of determining strain due to noise on workers in an industrial environment. Technological development enables better working conditions which then demands changes in methods for measuring strain and stress loadings. A modified method is now presented since the existing method for determining strains caused by exposure to noise is proving insufficient. The objective of the modified method is to eliminate the shortcomings of the existing method by taking into account the complex effects of noise in specific working environments. The effects of exposure to noise

The authors report a penetrating orbitocerebral steel mattress spring injury without permanent ophthalmic or neurologic sequelae. A 44-year-old female mattress factory worker sustained an injury to her right orbit by a high-velocity projectile foreign body. Imaging revealed a metallic spring in the right orbit traversing the optic nerve and superior orbital fissure and lodging in the temporal lobe of the brain. Cerebral angiography demonstrated the steel coil around, but not damaging, the middle cerebral artery and other vessels. With a combined craniotomy and frontal orbitotomy, the spring wa

Recently, many studies have found a decrease in semen quality which has increased the focus on male reproductive health. Occupational hazards are by far the best documented in reproductive epidemiological research. Generally, occupational exposures have been divided into physical exposures (heat and radiation), chemical exposures (solvents and pesticides), psychological exposures (distress), exposure to metals and welding. The recent and/or most important epidemiological studies exploring the effect of occupational exposures on semen quality and fecundity, the ability to conceive, are reviewed

Aluminum is known as a toxic metal today. Aluminum has already been determined to cause asthma bronchial and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It was also reported that Shaver disease undergoing fibrosis with large bubbles and the symptoms of potroom asthma had developed in the workers working in the manufacture of aluminum. The aim of the study was to analyze the relationship between aluminum and spontaneous pneumothorax in the patients not working in the industry and also to evaluate its results. Two groups were studied: the patient group and control group. The first group consisted of

Allergy to oil of turpentine has diminished largely due to the use of cheaper substitutes in many occupations. However, 2 particular areas still reliant on real oil of turpentine are those of the perfume industry and ceramic decoration. We report 24 cases of hand dermatitis in pottery workers involved in ceramic decoration, paintresses, liners, gilders, enamellers and a fine china painter, seen in a 6-month period following a change from Portuguese to Indonesian turpentine, of whom 14 were sensitive to Indonesian turpentine, 8 to alpha-pinene, 4 to delta-3-carene and 2 positive to turpentine p

Trichloroethylene, an organic solvent from the group of chlorinated hydrocarbons, has been employed throughout the greater part of this century particularly for degreasing of metals, dry cleaning and as a content in glue and lacquer. Biological monitoring of workers exposed to trichloroethylene as current health supervision has been employed in Danish factories since 1947 as the metabolite trichloroacetic acid in the urine provides an indication of the degree of exposure during the preceding week. In the present investigation, a review was undertaken of all measurements of trichloroacetic acid

Diagnostics of intrathoracic sarcoidosis in people with an occupational injury or an annoyance of respiratory organs are frequently connected with additional difficulties. The first roentgenological manifestations of a silicosis caused during the period of dry drilling especially in ore metal mining, are frequently bilaterally increased shadows of the hilum without any worth mentioning findings in the parenchyma. The radiograph of diffuse restiform and speckled shadows in people exposed to dust without a sufficient load or in younger age always demands a search for sarcoidosis. Granulomatoses

BACKGROUND: Cobalt is widely used in industrial processes, resulting in occupational exposure among workers in mining, smelting, and hard-metal industries. Although cobalt-containing compounds have been classified as carcinogenic or possibly carcinogenic, epidemiological evidence linking cobalt exposure to cancer risk remains limited and heterogeneous. This systematic review aimed to synthesize the available human evidence on the association between cobalt exposure and site-specific cancer outcomes. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus was conducted to identify ep

INTRODUCTION: Impalement injury is an uncommon presentation, and penetrating chest injuries account for 1% to 13% of thoracic trauma hospital admissions. The vast majority of patients with penetrating thoracic trauma who survive to reach the hospital alive can be managed nonoperatively. Nevertheless, in 10% to 15% of cases, emergency operation is necessary due to the associated hemorrhagic shock and visceral injury.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report on a 39-year-old male, a construction worker, who fell down from a height of a construction site, landing ventrally on a clump of iron rods with

Drugs, cosmetics, preservatives, fragrances, pesticides, metals, and other chemicals can cause skin sensitization. The ability to predict the skin sensitization potential and potency of substances is therefore of enormous importance to a host of different industries, to customers' and workers' safety. Animal experiments have been the preferred testing method for most risk assessment and regulatory purposes but considerable efforts to replace them with non-animal models and in silico models are ongoing. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the computational approaches and models tha

Lead, the 82nd element in our periodic table, has accompanied humankind throughout the millennia of our history and development. As a ubiquitous heavy metal, lead is used in multiple applications and nine billion tons continue to be extracted globally every year. Although the United States has succeeded in limiting lead exposure among its own citizens by banning the use of lead in gasoline and household paint, while instituting improved working conditions for those who are exposed to lead in the workplace, the battle against lead is not won. In addition, it continues to plague the rest of the

A review of the health effects of cadmium is presented. Overexposure to cadmium produces numerous acute and chronic effects. Cases of acute poisoning resemble metal-fume poisoning. The first and most distinctive indication of chronic effects is renal tubular dysfunction characterized by proteinuria. Other chronic effects include liver damage, emphysema, osteomalacia, neurological impairment, testicular, pancreatic, and adrenal damage, and anemia. Tumorigenic effects have been observed in animals, and excessive prostatic and lung cancer has been observed in worker studies. In vitro and in vivo

Microbially contaminated metal-working fluid (MWF) can cause respiratory symptoms in exposed workers in the form of exogenous allergic alveolitis/hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP). The diagnosis of HP is based, among others, on the identification of the culprit and the detection of corresponding specific IgG antibodies (sIgG) in the patient's serum. Commercial antigen tools for the detection of these HP triggers are rarely available; therefore, antigens from contaminated MWF workplace samples were isolated exemplarily for diagnosis of a suspected HP case. Various MWF-specific bacteria were ide

On the basis of the data available in the literature and of our experience, the clinical patterns of respiratory troubles which can be observed in workers exposed to inhalation of hard metal dusts can be schematized as follows: Irritation forms, mild and transient, or severe up to pulmonary oedema, dose-correlated, which occur in all subjects exposed to sufficiently high atmospheric concentrations; Asthmatic forms, either reversible after cessation of exposure or persistent after stopping the exposure, which occur in a relatively low percentage of exposed subjects and also apply to the states

Though copper (Cu)-handling workers are known to be at risk to develop metal fume fever and acute respiratory failure, very little is known about the metabolic fate and pulmonary toxicity of Cu compounds deposited in the lung. We have investigated time-course and dose-related changes in Cu contents, the production of metallothionein (MT) and inflammatory responses in the rat lung following intratracheal instillation of cupric sulfate (CuSO4). Intratracheally instilled Cu was cleared rapidly from the lung with a half-time of 7.5 h. Copper-binding MT was induced in the lung tissue following Cu i

Certain exposures related to agricultural work have been associated with neurological disorders. To date, few studies have included brain health measurements to link specific risk factors with possible neural mechanisms. Moreover, a synthesis of agricultural risk factors associated with poorer brain health outcomes is missing. In this systematic review, we identified 106 articles using keywords related to agriculture, occupational exposure, and the brain. We identified seven major risk factors: non-specific factors that are associated with agricultural work itself, toluene, pesticides, heavy m
