G-ALPS: An index for evaluating cognitive decline and aging using diffusion tensor imaging.

INTRODUCTION: The glymphatic system dysfunction is associated with cognitive decline in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHODS: We introduce the G-Along Perivascular Space (G-ALPS) index, an optimized version of the ALPS index derived using Genetic Programming, and use it to analyze 217 diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) samples. RESULTS: Compared to the ALPS, the proposed G-ALPS index shows a stronger correlation with cognitive measures, including Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE, 2.78% improvement), Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR, 5.13% improvement), and Functio

Changes in temporal and spatial gait coordination during the six‑minute walk test in people with multiple sclerosis.

Although gait coordination impairments represent a critical aspect of walking dysfunction in multiple sclerosis (MS), their variation during prolonged walking remains relatively unexplored. This study investigated changes in gait coordination during the six-minute walk test (6MWT) by jointly analyzing temporal and spatial measures of inter-limb and inter-joint coordination. Sixty-five people with MS and 43 matched unaffected individuals performed the 6MWT while kinematic data were acquired using an inertial measurement unit-based motion capture system. Coordination was quantified using the Pha

Advanced phenotyping features utilizing deep learning techniques for automated analysis of stomatal guard cell orientation.

Stomata are vital for controlling gas exchange and water vapor release, which significantly affect photosynthesis and transpiration. Characterizing stomatal traits such as size, density, and distribution is essential for adaptation to the environment. While microscopy is widely used for this purpose, manual analysis is labor-intensive and time-consuming that limit large scale studies. To overcome this, we introduce an automated, high-throughput method that leverages YOLOv8, an advanced deep learning model, for more accurate and efficient stomatal trait measurement. Our approach provides a comp

Quantum-enhanced imaging and metrology with undetected photons via squeezed-light homodyne detection.

In this work a quantum imaging setup based on undetected squeezed photons is employed for metrological applications such as sensitive phase measurement and quantum imaging. Unlike traditional quantum imaging with undetected photons, as introduced by A. Zeilinger et al., the proposed setup incorporates a homodyne detection system and enhances the brightness of the quantum light using optical parametric oscillators (OPOs). The inclusion of OPOs may challenge the validity of the low-gain approximation, necessitating the development of a new theoretical framework that extends beyond this approxima

Toward Soft Wearable Strain Sensors for Muscle Activity Monitoring.

The force-generating capacity of skeletal muscle is an important metric in the evaluation and diagnosis of musculoskeletal health. Measuring changes in muscle force exertion is essential for tracking the progress of athletes during training, for evaluating patients' recovery after muscle injury, and also for assisting the diagnosis of conditions such as muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, or Parkinson's disease. Traditional hardware for strength evaluation requires technical training for operation, generates discrete time points for muscle assessment, and is implemented in controlled setti

Evaluation of the histamine H3 receptor antagonists from LINS01 series as cholinesterases inhibitors: Enzymatic and modeling studies.

Histamine is involved in several central nervous system processes including cognition. In the last years, H3 receptor (H3 R) antagonists have been widely explored for their potential on dementias and other cognitive dysfunctions, and the cooperative role between histamine and acetylcholine neurotransmissions on cognitive processes is widely known in literature. This motivated us to assess the potential of 1-[(2,3-dihydrobenzofuran-1-yl)methyl]piperazines (LINS01 compounds) as inhibitors of cholinesterases, and thus this work presents the inhibitory effect of such compounds against acetyl (AChE

NENet: Nested EfficientNet and adversarial learning for joint optic disc and cup segmentation.

Glaucoma is an ocular disease threatening irreversible vision loss. Primary screening of Glaucoma involves computation of optic cup (OC) to optic disc (OD) ratio that is widely accepted metric. Recent deep learning frameworks for OD and OC segmentation have shown promising results and ways to attain remarkable performance. In this paper, we present a novel segmentation network, Nested EfficientNet (NENet) that consists of EfficientNetB4 as an encoder along with a nested network of pre-activated residual blocks, atrous spatial pyramid pooling (ASPP) block and attention gates (AGs). Identification of key genes for type 1 diabetes mellitus by network-based guilt by association.

OBJECTIVE This study aimed to propose a co-expression-network (CEN) based gene functional inference by extending the "Guilt by Association" (GBA) principle to predict candidate gene functions for type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). METHODS Firstly, transcriptome data of T1DM were retrieved from the genomics data repository for differentially expressed gene (DEGs) analysis, and a weighted differential CEN was generated. The area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC) was chosen to determine the performance metric for each Gene Ontology (GO) term. Differential expression analysis

Adhesive dynamics simulations quantitatively predict effects of kindlin-3 deficiency on T-cell homing.

Leukocyte adhesion is important for the proper functioning of the immune system. While leukocyte homing is mediated by adhesion receptors, the activation of these receptors is modulated by intracellular signaling molecules. In Leukocyte Adhesion Deficiency Type 3, the loss of the kindlin-3 prevents the activation of Leukocyte Function-associated Antigen-1 (LFA-1), which leads to a defect in adhesion, causing recurrent infections and bleeding disorders. Here, we use Integrated Signaling Adhesive Dynamics, a computer model of leukocyte rolling and adhesion combined with a simulated intracellular

Effect of contralateral acoustic stimulation on cochlear tuning measured using stimulus frequency and distortion product OAEs.

OBJECTIVE: To study whether a change in cochlear tuning, measured using OAEs, could be detected due to contralateral activation of the efferent system using broadband noise. DESIGN: Cochlear tuning measures based on SFOAE phase gradients and SFOAE-2TS 'Q' were used to test this hypothesis. SFOAE magnitude and phase gradient were measured using a pure-tone sweep from 1248 to 2496 Hz at 50 dB SPL. 2TS curves of SFOAE were recorded with a suppressor frequency swept from 1120 to 2080 Hz at 50 dB SPL. DPOAE f2-sweep phase gradient was also obtained to allow comparisons with the literature. All thr

MRF-based intensity invariant elastic registration of cardiac perfusion images using saliency information.

In this paper, we propose a Markov random field-based method that uses saliency and gradient information for elastic registration of dynamic contrast enhanced (DCE) magnetic resonance (MR) images of the heart. DCE-MR images are characterized by rapid intensity changes over time, thus posing challenges for conventional intensity-based registration methods. Saliency information contributes to a contrast invariant metric to identify similar regions in spite of contrast enhancement. Its robustness and accuracy are attributed to a close adherence to a neurobiological model of the human visual syste

Matrix symmetry and normality in multimode fiber transport.

Multimode fibers (MMFs) support high-dimensional optical transport within a compact form factor, with growing applications in biomedical imaging, telecommunications, and quantum engineering. Realizing this potential requires accurate knowledge of the fiber transmission matrix (TM); yet experimentally measured TMs are often corrupted by system-level distortions that obscure the underlying modal physics and limit wavefront control. Here, we show that the reciprocity of optical waves imposes symmetry constraints that provide self-consistency conditions for identifying and correcting such distorti

Decoupling Surgical Bioaerosol Burden and Biological Activity with Point-of-Care Microfluidic-Plasmonic Biosensing.

Point-of-care bioaerosol analysis remains a critical gap in perioperative exposure assessment, as existing air-monitoring approaches primarily quantify particle burden while providing limited information on aerosol-associated biomolecular composition. Here, we present Surgical Personalized On-site Tracker (SPOT), a portable microfluidic sampling-to-biosensing system with localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) biosensing for dual-parameter assessments of proteinaceous aerosol burden and accessible adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The SPOT platform enables on-site detection of total protein as

Editorial Commentary: The Lateral Femoral Condyle Angle: Adding Another Piece to the Complex Puzzle of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury Risk.

Predicting risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and ACL graft rupture remains an elusive challenge, with a substantial and emerging body of literature attempting to elucidate the clinical and anatomic factors that influence risk. In particular, anatomic risk factors have gained interest as advancements in imaging technology have conferred an enhanced ability to identify and quantify novel variables with differential magnitudes of clinical importance. The lateral femoral condyle angle represents one such novel metric that accounts for the relative flexion or extension of the lateral

A deep learning approach for keratoconus detection using spatio-temporal features from corneal imaging.

Keratoconus is a progressive corneal disease that requires early and accurate detection to prevent severe visual impairment. This study presents a deep learning-based classification model for distinguishing between healthy and keratoconic eyes using dynamic corneal imaging data from the CORVIS system. A hybrid CNN-RNN architecture was developed, combining a fine-tuned InceptionV3 network for spatial feature extraction with a recurrent LSTM module to capture temporal patterns across image sequences. To ensure robust evaluation, a 10-fold stratified cross-validation strategy was employed, with d

2025 Year in Review-Mechanical Power.

Mechanical ventilation remains a cornerstone of acute respiratory failure management, but ventilator-induced lung injury persists despite lung-protective strategies focused on limiting tidal volume (VT), plateau pressure, and driving pressure. Mechanical power has emerged as a comprehensive metric that quantifies the total energy delivered to the lungs per unit time by integrating VT, airway pressures, breathing frequency, flow, and PEEP into a single physiologic measure. Observational studies through 2025 show that elevated mechanical power is associated with worse outcomes, including increas

Mechanisms, Magnitude, and Consequence of Acute Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate Change With Guideline-Directed Medical Therapy Initiation in Heart Failure.

Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is a key metric for assessing and monitoring kidney function. In heart failure management, guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) medications such as renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors, mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists, and sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors can initially cause a transient decrease in eGFR due to hemodynamic changes, such as a reduction in systemic and glomerular hypertension, reversal of hyperfiltration, and vasodilation in the glomerular vasculature. Despite the initial drop, long-term use of GDMT slows

Analysis of a mathematical model for malaria using data-driven approach.

Malaria remains one of the leading causes of global morbidity and mortality, with millions of cases and fatalities annually. Effective intervention strategies by public health authorities and medical practitioners necessitate a robust understanding of disease transmission dynamics. This study presents a novel framework for modeling malaria transmission dynamics by integrating temperature and altitude-dependent transmission functions into a compartmental SIR-SI model. A key innovation lies in the introduction of a new transmission function that explicitly captures environmental dependencies, en
