This report is part of a biomarker study conducted in an Italian population with exposure to environmental benzene ranging from 1.43 to 31.41 μg/m³ (values from personal sampling). DNA damage induced by benzene is the crucial mechanism of its genotoxicity, which leads to chronic benzene poisoning, haematotoxicity and leukaemia. Schistosoma haematobium infection is the most common health problem in Egypt. It is strongly associated with the development of urinary bladder carcinoma. The aim of this study was to determine whether infection with this parasite resulted in an increase of chromosomal breakage in the exfoliated urothelial cells. In order to assess spontaneous mutability and accuracy of DNA joining in ataxia telangiectasia, a disorder with spontaneous chromosome breakage, the replicating shuttle vector plasmid, pZ189, was transfected into SV40 virus-transformed fibroblasts from ataxia telangiectasia patients. PURPOSE: To evaluate the genetic instability in somatic cells of patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) by means of study of micronuclei (MN) level in exfoliated buccal cells and DNA damage in leukocytes.
METHODS: The levels of MN in exfoliated buccal cells and DNA damage in leukocytes of 17 PCOS patients and 17 healthy women were studied. Except MN, other nuclear anomalies connected both with genotoxicity and cytotoxicity were evaluated. PURPOSE: To estimate the biological doses for two severely exposed subjects (A and B) in a radiation accident in Shandong Jining, China in 2004.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Conventional chromosome aberration analysis and cytokinesis-block micronuclei (CBMN) assay were performed in peripheral blood and bone marrow samples on two subjects after the accident. A new dose-effect curve and the nuclear division index (NDI) obtained from in vitro irradiation experiments using high dose of (60)Co gamma-rays were used to estimate the exposed doses.

The mutagenic effects of microwave and chromium trioxide (CrO(3)) on Vicia faba root tip were studied.
