Herbivore-induced defense response in a model legume. Two-spotted spider mites induce emission of (E)-beta-ocimene and transcript accumulation of (E)-beta-ocimene synthase in Lotus japonicus.

Indirect defense of plants against herbivores often involves the induced emission of volatile infochemicals including terpenoids that attract natural enemies of the herbivores. We report the isolation and characterization of a terpene synthase cDNA (LjEbetaOS) from a model legume, Lotus japonicus. Recombinant LjEbetaOS enzyme produced (E)-beta-ocimene (98%) and its Z-isomer (2%). Transcripts of LjEbetaOS were induced in L. japonicus plants infested with two-spotted spider mites (Tetranychus urticae), coinciding with increasing emissions of (E)-beta-ocimene as well as other volatiles, (Z)-3-hex

Cockroach allergen in house dust.

The cockroach allergen (Bla g 1) content was determined in the floor dust of 46 homes with recent cockroach extermination in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. IgE antibodies to Blattella germanica, house-dust mite, cat dander, dog dander, and a mixture of molds were determined in venous blood samples of 46 children (4-12 years) and one of their biologic parents (24-54 years). Specific IgE to cockroach was also determined in a sample of the general population studied in a previous case-control study, one group (n = 20) with three groups (n =76) without history of cockroach infestation of the home. Ecological considerations in scrub typhus. 2. Vector species.

Certain features, characteristic of outbreaks of scrub typhus, can be explained by the behaviour of the chigger vectors which are remarkably hardy and can survive weeks of freezing or immersion in water. The established vectors are all species of the genus Leptotrombidium (Leptotrombidium), i.e., L. (L.) akamushi (Brumpt, 1910), L. (L.) deliense (Walch, 1922), L. (L.) pallidum (Nagayo et al., 1919), and L. (L.) scutellare (Nagayo et al., 1921). These chiggers (i.e. larval mites) infest a broad variety of birds and mammals, and tend to be found in clusters on certain specific sites on the host.

Honey bees (Apis mellifera) preselected for Varroa sensitive hygiene discriminate between live and dead Varroa destructor and inanimate objects.

Varroa destructor is one of the main causes of colony losses of the western honey bee (Apis mellifera). Many efforts exist to breed honey bees resistant to V. destructor. Varroa sensitive hygiene (VSH) is a commonly selected behavioural trait; VSH workers remove the pupae of mite infested brood cells with high efficiency, interrupting the reproduction of the mite. The cues and triggers for this behaviour are not yet fully understood. To determine what elicits this removal behaviour, we examined preselected VSH workers´ responses to four different groups of objects inserted into freshly capped

Experimental sarcoptes scabiei infestation in pigs: (2) Effects on production.

A study on the development and effect of experimental Sarcoptes scabiei var suis infestations in growing pigs is described. Pigs were infested at either weekly or fortnightly intervals throughout each experimental and individual growth rates and feed conversion ratios were determined. The animals were fed diets which contained either optimal or sub-optimal levels of protein. They were housed either intensively or extensively. In all experiments the majority of infested animals developed a generalised hypersensitivity to sarcoptes mites and performed significantly less efficiently than non-infe

Restorative potential of melatonin during treatment of severe scabies in an experimental model.

A key limitation of current synthetic treatments of scabies is their focus on eliminating the mites rather than addressing the body's immune response or tissue healing, potentially fostering drug resistance and prolonging recovery. Melatonin, with its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties, presents a potential solution. Consequently, this research seeks to assess the value of melatonin supplementation as complementary therapy in Sarcoptes scabiei mite infestation. The study included 25 male crossbreed rabbits, divided into five groups of five rabbits each: group I (a neg

Dermatologic Diseases of Four-Toed Hedgehogs.

Dermatologic diseases are frequently diagnosed in the four-toed hedgehog. Common clinical signs include spine loss, scales and crusts, pruritus, alopecia, and masses. Caparinia tripilis, family Psoroptidae, is the most common mite affecting hedgehogs, and is diagnosed via light microscopy. Dermatophytosis from Trichophyton erinacei infection is a common zoonotic dermatologic disease in pet hedgehogs. Diagnosis is through fungal culture. Neoplasia is another major cause of dermatologic diseases in four-toed hedgehogs. The diagnostic approach typically begins with a fine-needle aspirate but ofte

New records of ectoparasitic Acari (Arachnida) and Streblidae (Diptera) from bats in Jalisco, Mexico.

Ectoparasites of bats in the Neotropics are diverse and play numerous ecological roles as vectors of microbial pathogens and endoparasites and as food sources for other cave fauna living both on their hosts and in bat roosts. The ectoparasites of bats in Jalisco State of western Mexico have not been as well described as those of other states with recent checklists that have focused primarily on the Yucatan Peninsula. We captured bats from 2011-2015 on the south coast and Sierra de Amula, Jalisco using mist nets, and we removed ectoparasites by hand. We identified 24 species of streblid bat fli

Raillietia caprae (Acari: Raillietidae) and Psoroptes ovis (Acari: Psoroptidae) in the ears of goats in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Southeast Brazil.

Ear canals of 145 domestic goats including the breeds Saanen, Toggenburg, Anglobian, Alpine, Moxoto (native) and crossbred goats from 10 smallholder farms were examined by flushing for the presence of ear mites. Prevalence of Raillietia caprae Quintero, Bassols and Acevedo, 1980 was much more higher than Psoroptes ovis (Hering, 1838) in the studied area, respectively 62% (90/145) and 4% (6/145). The youngest animal parasitized was eight months old and the oldest was 10 years old. Subclinical otitis is a common feature of infestation by both species but increase of wax and the presence of pus w

[Demodectic mange in a dog in Beytepe University campus (author's transl)].

Scabies (mange) is a skin disease of men and animals caused by microscopical acarids. There are mainly three species in Turkey, namely Demodex folliculorum, Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis, and Pyemones ventricosus. They are easily transmissible from animals to men and from men to animals. These parasites may cause inflammation, thickening, scabrous and severe itching. Serious infectious and parasitic diseases are transmitted from dogs to men. We present a case of Demodectic mange in a dog in Beytepe University Campus.

Efficacy and safety of a novel oral isoxazoline, sarolaner (Simparica™), for the treatment of sarcoptic mange in dogs.

The efficacy of the novel isoxazoline, sarolaner (Simparica™) was investigated in dogs with clinical signs consistent with sarcoptic mange and harbouring natural infestations of Sarcoptes scabiei. One placebo-controlled laboratory study and one multi-centred field study with a commercial comparator containing imidacloprid/moxidectin (Advocate(®) spot-on) were conducted. Oral or topical treatments were administered on Days 0 and 30. Up to 10 skin scrapings were taken for the assessment of S. scabiei infestations from each dog before treatment and on Days 14, 30, 44 and 60 in the laboratory stud

Pathology of sarcoptic mange in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes): macroscopic and histologic characterization of three disease stages.

Sarcoptic mange is a highly contagious skin disease that can have a devastating impact on affected wild mammal populations. There are notable variations in the clinical and pathologic picture of sarcoptic mange among species and among conspecifics. However, the origin of these variations is unclear. We propose a classification scheme for skin lesions associated with Sarcoptes scabiei infestation to provide a basis for a subsequent risk factor analysis. We conducted a case-control study focused on macroscopic and histologic examination of the skin, using 279 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) found dead

Seasonal dynamics of spinose ear tick Otobius megnini associated with horse otoacariasis in Sri Lanka.

Otobius megnini is a one host, nidicolous soft tick (Family Argasidae) whose larvae and nymphs parasitize the external ear canal of many wild and domestic animals and occasionally humans. The present study was conducted to determine the seasonal dynamics of O. megnini infesting stabled horses in Nuwara Eliya racecourses. Ticks were sampled biweekly for two years from May 2013 to May 2015 from the ear canal of seven thoroughbred male horses. Weather data: temperature, rainfall and humidity for the study period were obtained from the Meteorological Department, Colombo. A total of 23, 287 ticks o

Role of plant phytochemicals/extracts for the control of Dermanyssus gallinae in poultry and its zoonotic importance.

Dermanyssus gallinae (poultry red mite) has negative impact on poultry production, causing major economic losses by damaging the health of chickens and other bird species, globally. D. gallinae also acts as vector and reservoir of different viral and bacterial pathogens such as, E. coli, S. enteriditis, P. multocida, S. gallinarum, Newcastle disease, Avian influenza, Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, Eastern, Western and Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis viruses. Some of them are important from zoonotic point of view like, S. enteritidis, Borrelia burgdorferi and avian influenza A virus. It also

How can reasonable and repeatable acaricidal tests of natural products against Sarcoptes and Psoroptes mites be carried out?

Sarcoptic and psoroptic mange threaten the health of both animals and humans worldwide and result in enormous socioeconomic loss. Discovery of new lead compounds is a major goal for controlling this kind of disease. However, the methodological shortcomings of acaricidal tests against Sarcoptes and Psoroptes mites for screening active compounds in vitro troubles colleagues and should be given more attention.
