Reliability calculation under seasonally varying failure rate.

This paper treats of the analytical solution of reliability problems in the special case when the failure rate acting on an object is a periodic piecewise constant function of time. It is proposed that the nonstationary failure rate be substituted by a stationary one. The formula intended for calculation of this fictitious equivalent stationary failure rate is derived. This makes possible the finding of approximate solutions of reliability problems in an analytical form convenient for applications in the sphere of engineering and for the following analysis. A simplistic example is used to demo

Generalized Poisson distribution: the property of mixture of Poisson and comparison with negative binomial distribution.

We prove that the generalized Poisson distribution GP(theta, eta) (eta > or = 0) is a mixture of Poisson distributions; this is a new property for a distribution which is the topic of the book by Consul (1989). Because we find that the fits to count data of the generalized Poisson and negative binomial distributions are often similar, to understand their differences, we compare the probability mass functions and skewnesses of the generalized Poisson and negative binomial distributions with the first two moments fixed. They have slight differences in many situations, but their zero-inflated dis

Multiple Imputation for Recurrent Events With Off-Risk Periods.

When observation of recurrent events ends before the planned follow-up time, conclusions may depend on untestable assumptions about outcomes during the unobserved period. This is especially challenging for recurrent outcomes such as hospitalizations or infections, for which each event creates a temporary period during which a new event cannot occur and at-risk time stops accruing. In such settings, multiple imputation must jointly determine future event counts and future at-risk exposure. This paper proposes an off-risk-aware extension of controlled multiple imputation that simulates post-drop

Multilevel functional quantile principal component analysis.

Accelerometer studies typically include repeated 24-h observations over several days and more recently have collected information on participants for weeks, months, or years. Meanwhile, there is growing evidence to suggest that components of physical activity beyond average or expected values are important for quantifying and understanding activity. Motivated by these emerging aspects, we introduce Multilevel Functional Quantile Principal Component Analysis (MFQPCA), a novel dimension-reduction technique that extends Functional Quantile Principal Component Analysis to hierarchical functional d

Flexible and Interpretable Modeling of Overlapping Exposure Risks in Self-Controlled Case Series Analysis.

The self-controlled case series (SCCS) method is frequently employed to explore the relationship between transient exposures and subsequent health events, utilizing data from individuals who have experienced the event of interest. Conventional spline-based SCCS models typically do not account for overlapping exposure periods and fail to accommodate complex interactive effects among multiple exposures. In this paper, we introduce a novel semiparametric SCCS method that employs a functional partial-linear single index (PLSI) link function, allowing for the estimation of overlapping exposure risk

Augmented two-stage estimation for treatment switching in oncology trials: Leveraging external data for improved precision.

Randomized controlled trials in oncology often allow control group participants to switch to experimental treatments, a practice that, while often ethically necessary, complicates the accurate estimation of long-term treatment effects. When switching rates are high or sample sizes are limited, commonly used methods for treatment switching adjustment (such as the rank-preserving structural failure time model, inverse probability of censoring weights, and two-stage estimation) may produce imprecise estimates. Real-world data can be used to develop an external control arm for the randomized contr

Selection processes, transportability, and failure time analysis in life history studies.

In life history analysis of data from cohort studies, it is important to address the process by which participants are identified and selected. Many health studies select or enrol individuals based on whether they have experienced certain health related events, for example, disease diagnosis or some complication from disease. Standard methods of analysis rely on assumptions concerning the independence of selection and a person's prospective life history process, given their prior history. Violations of such assumptions are common, however, and can bias estimation of process features. This has

Nonparametric Estimation of Transition Intensities in Interval-Censored Markov Multistate Models Without Loops.

Interval-censored multistate data is collected when the state of a subject is observed periodically. The analysis of such data using nonparametric multistate models was not possible until recently but is very desirable as it allows for more flexibility than its parametric counterparts. The single available result to date has some unique drawbacks. We propose a nonparametric estimator of the transition intensities for interval-censored multistate data using an Expectation Maximization algorithm. The method allows for a mix of interval-censored and right-censored (exactly observed) transitions.

Clustering Functional Data With Measurement Errors: A Simulation-Based Approach.

Clustering analysis of functional data, which comprises observations that evolve continuously over time or space, has gained increasing attention across various scientific disciplines. Practical applications often involve functional data that are contaminated with measurement errors arising from imprecise instruments, sampling errors, or other sources. These errors can significantly distort the inherent data structure, resulting in erroneous clustering outcomes. In this article, we propose a simulation-based approach designed to mitigate the impact of measurement errors. Our proposed method es

Using Multilevel Models and Generalized Estimating Equation Models to Account for Clustering in Neurology Clinical Research.

In clinical and health services research, clustered data (also known as data with a multilevel or hierarchical structure) are frequently encountered. For example, patients may be clustered or nested within hospitals. Understanding when data have a multilevel structure is important because clustering of individuals can induce a homogeneity in outcomes within clusters, so that, even after adjusting for measured covariates, outcomes for 2 individuals in the same cluster are more likely to be similar than outcomes for 2 individuals from different clusters. Using conventional statistical regression

Normative data for PID-5 domains, facets, and personality disorder composites from a representative sample and comparison to community and clinical samples.

The introduction of the alternative model of personality disorders in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Model of Mental Disorders (American Psychiatric Association, 2013) represented a substantive change in how personality disorders (PDs) are diagnosed. One barrier to its adoption (among several) in clinical practice, however, is a lack of information as to what constitutes an elevated score on the 25 domains and facets that comprise Criterion B. Unique sets of facets can be configured to assess any 1 of 6 PDs retained in the alternative model of personality disorders; each o

A joint overdispersed marginalized random-effects model for analyzing two or more longitudinal ordinal responses.

Disease severity is a latent concept which should be observed using a measurement tool; it can be useful in assessing disease status both cross-sectionally and longitudinally. Medsger scale is a valid instrument for assessing the systemic sclerosis severity in which the items are categorized from 0 (normal) to 4 (endstage) for each organ system. We simultaneously analyzed two of the Medsger scale items, namely, general system and skin system as two correlated ordinal responses using an overdispersed marginalized random-effects model for longitudinal ordinal data exhibiting an overdispersion pa

Distribution-free inference on contrasts of arbitrary summary measures of survival.

We present an approach for inference on contrasts of clinically meaningful functionals of a survivor distribution (e.g., restricted mean, quantiles) that can avoid strong parametric or semiparametric assumptions on the underlying structure of the data. In this multistage approach, we first use an adaptive predictive model to estimate conditional survival distributions based on covariates. We then estimate nonparametrically one or more functionals of survival from the covariate-specific survival curves and evaluated contrasts of those functionals. We find that the use of an adaptive nonparametr

Economic values under inappropriate normal distribution assumptions.

The objectives of this study were to quantify the errors in economic values (EVs) for traits affected by cost or price thresholds when skewed or kurtotic distributions of varying degree are assumed to be normal and when data with a normal distribution is subject to censoring. EVs were estimated for a continuous trait with dichotomous economic implications because of a price premium or penalty arising from a threshold ranging between -4 and 4 standard deviations from the mean. In order to evaluate the impacts of skewness, positive and negative excess kurtosis, standard skew normal, Pearson and

Exploiting test structure: case series, case-control comparison, and dissociation.

Most neuropsychological tests consist of multiple items, and a subject's test score is the sum of the item scores. The test results for each subject thus comprise multiple data-points, and any data-set with test results from more than one subject has at least a two-level structure, with the test item as the first level and the subject as the second level. This structure may be exploited to yield more nuanced statistical analyses than those that treat each subject's test score as a single data-point. Exploiting this structure allows us to take into account the effect of test length and dispersi

Benchmarking AI Vibe Coding for Clinical Statistical Analysis: A Structured Evaluation in Pulmonary Hypertension Research.

Statistical analysis of clinical data requires expertise in medical statistics. Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used for code generation and may support both descriptive and advanced analyses, but their reliability remains uncertain. This study evaluated whether five current LLMs (GPT 5.3, Claude Sonnet 4.6, Gemini 2.5 Flash, Perplexity, and Grok) could reproduce expert-validated statistical analyses from a published clinical workflow across three statistical tasks: descriptive table generation, Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, and Cox proportional hazards modelling. All models re

Are our data symmetric?

Skewness indicates a lack of symmetry in a distribution. Knowing the symmetry of the underlying data is essential for parametric analysis, fitting distributions or doing transformations to the data. The coefficient of skewness is the commonly used measure to identify a lack of symmetry in the underlying data, although graphical procedures can also be effective. We discuss three different methods to assess skewness: traditional coefficient of skewness index, skewness index based on the L-moments discussed by Hosking and the asymptotic test of symmetry developed by Randles et al. With this work,

On semiparametric accelerated failure time models with time-varying covariates: A maximum penalised likelihood estimation.

The accelerated failure time (AFT) model offers an important and useful alternative to the conventional Cox proportional hazards model, particularly when the proportional hazards assumption for a Cox model is violated. Since an AFT model is basically a log-linear model, meaningful interpretations of covariate effects on failure times can be made directly. However, estimation of a semiparametric AFT model imposes computational challenges even when it only has time-fixed covariates, and the situation becomes much more complicated when time-varying covariates are included. In this paper, we propo

Theoretical ellipsoidal model of gastric electrical control activity propagation.

A theoretical model of electric current propagation in the human stomach is developed using an approach in which the shape of the organ is assumed to be a truncated ellipsoid whose dimensions can be determined from anatomic measurements. The gastric electrical activity is simulated using a ring of isopotential electric current dipoles that are generated by a pacemaker situated in the gastric corpus. The dipoles propagate in the direction of the pylorus at a frequency of three cycles per minute. The advantages of employing ellipsoids in the analytical formulation of this gastric model are discu

Joint partial credit and time model.

Joint modeling of responses and response times (RTs) has become a mainstream approach in psychological and educational measurement, offering a deeper understanding of test-taking behavior and more precise estimates of individual performance. However, despite its growing popularity, little is known about RT patterns under partial credit settings. When RTs vary across score categories, psychometric models may benefit from incorporating this heterogeneity to improve measurement accuracy. This article introduces the Joint Partial Credit and Time Model (JPCTM), a new measurement model for partial c
