Contact, moral foundations or knowledge? What predicts attitudes towards women who undergo IVF.

BACKGROUND: The willingness to try in vitro fertilization (IVF) as an infertility treatment, as well as its psychosocial consequences for couples, may be influenced by how they perceive the attitudes of general public towards this procedure. The focus of the current study was to identify predictors of attitudes towards mothers who underwent IVF to conceive a child. Three predictors were derived from attitude components: contact with someone who had undergone IVF (behavior), moral foundations (emotions), and the level of knowledge (cognition) about IVF. METHOD: In total, 817 participants (118

When Are Sexist Attitudes Risk Factors for Dating Aggression? The Role of Moral Disengagement in Spanish Adolescents.

This research aimed to explore the interplay of sexism and moral disengagement (MD) in the explanation of psychological and physical dating aggression. The sample comprised 1113 Spanish adolescents (49.2% girls, n = 552) between the ages of 12 to 17 (M = 14.44). A latent profile analysis conducted with sub-sample of 432 adolescents with sentimental experience identified four configurations: (1) benevolent; (2) less disengaged and sexist; (3) highly disengaged and sexist; and (4) moderately disengaged and sexist. Regarding gender and age, boys were more present than girls in the moderately dise

Abortion attitudes, religious and moral beliefs, and pastoral care among Protestant religious leaders in Georgia.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to explore Protestant religious leaders' attitudes towards abortion and their strategies for pastoral care in Georgia, USA. Religious leaders may play an important role in providing sexual and reproductive health pastoral care given a long history of supporting healing and health promotion. METHODS: We conducted 20 in-depth interviews with Mainline and Black Protestant religious leaders on their attitudes toward abortion and how they provide pastoral care for abortion. The study was conducted in a county with relatively higher rates of abortion, lower a

Does the "Morning Morality Effect" Apply to Prehospital Anaesthesiologists? An Investigation into Diurnal Changes in Ethical Behaviour.

The "morning morality effect"-the alleged phenomenon that people are more likely to act in unethical ways in the afternoon when they are tired and have less self-control than in the morning-may well be expected to influence prehospital anaesthesiologist manning mobile emergency care units (MECUs). The working conditions of these units routinely entail fatigue, hunger, sleep deprivation and other physical or emotional conditions that might make prehospital units predisposed to exhibit the "morning morality effect". We investigated whether this is in fact the case by looking at the distribution

Rumination as a Mediator of the Associations Between Moral Injury and Mental Health Problems in Combat-Wounded Veterans.

Moral injury is hypothesized to develop from witnessing or engaging in events that violate one's beliefs about themselves and has been shown to be associated with negative mental health symptoms. Although there has been an increase in research examining moral injury among military veterans, mechanisms that link moral injury to mental health outcomes are not well understood. The present study examined rumination subcomponents (problem-focused thoughts, counterfactual thinking, repetitive thoughts, and anticipatory thoughts) as possible mediators of the associations between moral injury (both se

Nurses' negative affective states, moral disengagement, and knowledge hiding: The moderating role of ethical leadership.

AIM: This study aims to investigate the influence of nurses' negative affective states on their knowledge-hiding behaviours through moral disengagement, and especially the moderating role of ethical leadership. BACKGROUND: Researchers have paid much attention to the harmfulness of knowledge hiding, yet the mechanisms of why and how nurses' negative affective states have an impact on their knowledge-hiding behaviours are less clear. METHOD: Two different questionnaire surveys were used in two different studies. In Study 1, a research design with three stages, including 323 nurses (64.47% resp

Moral Adherence: HIV Treatment, Undetectability, and Stigmatized Viral Loads among Haitians in South Florida.

In the United States, HIV is rendered a chronic condition, and viral transmission is minimized through strict adherence to pharmaceutical treatment. Treatment reduces viral loads to untraceable levels in the blood, a status known as "undetectable," as determined by laboratory testing. For Haitians living with HIV in South Florida, "undetectable" has become more than a viral status; it is a means to know and govern themselves as moral actors and to survey and stigmatize others who remain "detectable." The ethnographic evidence I present here suggests that Haitians adopt novel forms of subjectiv

Stigma, deforming metaphors and patients' moral experience of multibacillary leprosy in Sobral, Ceará State, Brazil.

In response to the call for a new Science of Stigma, this anthropological study investigates the moral experience of patients diagnosed with severe multibacillary leprosy. From 2003 to 2006, fieldwork was conducted in the so-called 'United-States-of-Sobral', in Ceará State, Northeast Brazil. Sobral is highly endemic for leprosy, despite intensified eradication efforts and a 30% increase in primary care coverage since 1999. Of 329 active leprosy cases at two public clinics, 279 multibacillary patients were identified and six information-rich cases selected for in-depth ethnographic analysis, ut

Acts, omissions, intentions and motives: a philosophical examination of the moral distinction between killing and letting die.

Health care professionals frequently justify moral decisions by appealing to the acts and omissions distinction and the principle of double effect. These principles are often quoted and criticised in the nursing literature, particularly in relation to active and passive euthanasia. Authors are, however, inclined to acknowledge the fact that they are a philosophical minefield, but fall short of providing a substantial critical analysis. Those who uphold the acts and omissions distinction claim that we are morally less responsible for our omissions than for our acts. The principle of double effe

[The issue of "moral" therapies in the treatment the mentally ill as presented in Polish medical writing in the 1830s and 1840s].

The beginning of the 1830s sees the appearance of a specialist approach to psychiatric topics in Polish scientific writing. The author discusses the two first scientific works in the field. The first is the little publicized and underestimated--in Polish historiography--work by the physician Józef Jakubowski of Cracow. The dissertation, entitled O metodzie psychicnej (On the psychic method), appeared in print in 1831. The other work discussed is the hitherto unknown manuscript of the dissertation O porzadku w domu zdrowia (On order in the health-house) written by professor Józef Korzeniowski o

Dimensionality of Moral Distress Among Emergency Nurses in a Non-Western Context: A Two-Stage Psychometric Validation.

AIM: To evaluate the dimensional structure of moral distress in a non-Western emergency nursing context, cross-validate it in an independent subsample, and establish concurrent criterion-related validity against burnout and turnover intention. BACKGROUND: Moral distress predicts burnout and turnover in emergency nursing but is usually analyzed as a single aggregate score, treating structurally distinct ethical conflicts as interchangeable. METHODS: Two-stage split-half psychometric study across six university-affiliated emergency departments in western Iran, reported per COSMIN and STROBE. O

The killing baby Hitler dilemma: A novel paradigm for studying causal-temporal distance in moral decision-making.

Classic moral dilemmas such as the trolley and footbridge problems involve immediate actions and certain consequences, limiting the study of how temporal and causal structure shapes moral judgment. The present study introduces a novel experimental paradigm-the Killing Baby Hitler (KBH) dilemma-to investigate how the causal-temporal structure linking a moral action to its consequences affects moral decision-making. Inspired by a well-known thought experiment in philosophy and popular culture, the scenario asks whether one should allow a drowning child, known to be Adolf Hitler, to die in order

Emotional Exhaustion, Moral Sensitivity, and Happiness Among Nurses in Cardiac Wards: A Multicenter Cross-Sectional Study.

AIM(S): To examine associations of emotional exhaustion and moral sensitivity with happiness among nurses in cardiac wards. BACKGROUND: Cardiac nursing involves sustained emotional demands and ethical challenges, yet their relative associations with happiness are unclear. METHOD(S): This multicenter cross-sectional study randomly sampled 220 nurses from four Iranian teaching hospitals. Validated questionnaires assessed happiness, moral sensitivity, and emotional exhaustion. Pearson correlations were primary, with Spearman sensitivity analyses. Rational decisions or moral obligations? A systematic review of TPB-NAM integration in understanding low-carbon behavior.

OBJECTIVE: Understanding low-carbon behavior remains a significant challenge due to the complexity of environmental decision-making and the persistent intention-behavior gap. While the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and the Norm Activation Model (NAM) are among the most widely applied frameworks for explaining environmental behavior, studies increasingly integrate these theories to capture both rational and moral dimensions of decision-making. This study systematically reviews TPB-NAM integration research to identify major research trends, theoretical integration approaches, and implications

Establishing Clinically Significant Change Benchmarks for the Moral Injury Outcome Scale in VA Behavioral Health Settings.

This study aimed to establish benchmarks for clinically significant change for the Moral Injury Outcome Scale (MIOS) using national data from Veterans treated in U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) behavioral health settings. We analyzed archival electronic health record data from 2,521 Veterans administered the MIOS between July 2022 and March 2025. A subset of 361 Veterans who completed at least two MIOS administrations within 4 months constituted the episode-of-care cohort. Reliable change indices (RCIs) and functional recovery thresholds were calculated using the Jacobson and Truax me

Mental health after the sirens: moral injury in responders and survivors of disaster, mass casualty, and crisis care.

Healthcare professionals responding to disasters, mass casualty incidents, pandemics, and sustained high-acuity clinical environments face extraordinary ethical and emotional demands. While burnout and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have historically framed clinician distress, these constructs incompletely capture the moral and existential harm experienced when clinicians are forced to act in ways that conflict with deeply held professional and ethical values. Moral injury has emerged as a distinct framework to explain this phenomenon. This review synthesizes current understanding of mo
