Dengue fever is the most important mosquito-borne viral disease in Southeast Asia. Insecticides remain the most effective vector control approach for Aedes mosquitoes. Four main classes of insecticides are widely used for mosquito control: organochlorines, organophosphates, pyrethroids and carbamates. Here, we review the distribution of dengue fever from 2000 to 2020 and its associated mortality in Southeast Asian countries, and we gather evidence on the trend of insecticide resistance and its distribution in these countries since 2000, summarising the mechanisms involved. The prevalence of re…

The mosquito genome projects facilitated research in new facets of mosquito biology, including functional genetic studies in the dengue and Zika virus vector Aedes aegypti and the primary African malaria vector Anopheles gambiae. RNA interference (RNAi) has facilitated gene silencing experiments in both of these disease vector mosquito species and could one day be applied as a new method of vector control. Here, we describe a procedure for the genetic engineering of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (baker's yeast) that express short hairpin RNA (shRNA) corresponding to mosquito target genes of interes

Mosquitoes pose a major threat to human health as they spread many deadly diseases like malaria, dengue, chikungunya, filariasis, Japanese encephalitis and Zika. Identification and use of novel molecular tools are essential to combat the spread of vector borne diseases. Genome editing tools have been used for the precise alterations of the gene of interest for producing the desirable trait in mosquitoes. Deletion of functional genes or insertion of toxic genes in vector mosquitoes will produce either knock-out or knock-in mutants that will check the spread of vector-borne diseases. Presently,

This is a protocol for a Cochrane Review (intervention). The objectives are as follows: Our objective is to evaluate the benefits and harms of vector-control strategies in preventing dengue transmission in endemic populations. This protocol describes the approach for our four interventions of interest, which we intend to publish as four separate Cochrane reviews. These will evaluate the benefits and harms of: biological vector-control strategies; chemical vector-control strategies; environmental vector-control strategies; and combined vector-control strategies.

Infectious diseases present ecological and public health challenges that can be addressed with mathematical models. Certain pathogens, however, including the emerging West Nile virus (WN) in North America, exhibit a complex seasonal ecology that is not readily analysed with standard epidemiological methods. We develop a single-season susceptible-infectious-removed (SIR) model of WN cross-infection between birds and mosquitoes, incorporating specific features unique to WN ecology. We obtain the disease reproduction number, R0, and show that mosquito control decreases, but bird control increases…

Aedes polynesiensis Marks (Diptera: Culicidae) is the primary vector of lymphatic filariasis (LF) in the island countries and territories of the South Pacific. In the development of a novel control tool, the response of Ae. polynesiensis to six different colours (three solid fabrics, two patterned fabrics and a plastic tarp) was measured using a digital photographic system. Adult mosquitoes were placed into an environmental chamber and allowed to choose between a white target and one of six experimental targets. Mosquito landing frequency and landing duration were calculated. Adult female Ae.

Arboviruses such as yellow fever, dengue, chikungunya and zika are transmitted mainly by the mosquito vector Aedes aegypti. Especially in the tropics, inefficacy of mosquito control causes arboviruses outbreaks every year, affecting the general population with debilitating effects in infected individuals. Several strategies have been tried to control the proliferation of A. aegypti using physical, biological, and chemical control measures. Other methods are currently under research and development, amongst which the use of nanotechnology has attracted a lot of attention of the researchers in r…

Eugenol, a major constituent of clove and basil essential oils, has gained attention for its insecticidal properties, particularly against Aedes aegypti Linnaeus, suggesting potential effectiveness against other Aedes species. Aedes albopictus (Skuse) (Asian tiger mosquito) is a rapidly spreading invasive species responsible for transmitting serious diseases, including dengue. In the present study, we evaluated eugenol's larvicidal activity against A. albopictus larvae and its impact on the non-target larvivorous fish, Trichogaster fasciata. Eugenol showed larvicidal activity with an LC50 of 1

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a universal attractant for monitoring blood-feeding insects, such as mosquitoes. Although dry ice has been the historical benchmark, compressed gas cylinders can be used in tandem with a gas regulator to control CO2 flow rate more precisely. The literature is sparse on best practices regarding how to choose or test regulators. We evaluated four commercially available regulator types from beverage and welding suppliers and compared them to a previously tested regulator used at the Salt Lake City Mosquito Abatement District (SLCMAD). Using environmental chambers, we simul

Mosquito larval control by biorational larvicides plays a crucial role in mosquito and mosquito-borne disease management. However, the availability of larvicides that meet the criteria of efficacy, safety, and quality is limited and conventional pesticides are no longer preferred for larval control. Although efforts are made to research new active ingredients (AIs), it is equally important to innovate new formulations based on currently available AIs such as microbial agents and insect growth regulators. Studies were therefore conducted to compare the laboratory activity and semi-field efficac

BACKGROUND: Efforts to improve the impact of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) should be informed by understanding of the causes of decay in effect. Holes in LLINs have been estimated to account for 7-11% of loss in effect on vectorial capacity for Plasmodium falciparum malaria in an analysis of repeated cross-sectional surveys of LLINs in Kenya. This does not account for the effect of holes as a cause of net attrition or non-use, which cannot be measured using only cross-sectional data. There is a need for estimates of how much these indirect effects of physical damage on use and attriti

As the incidence of arboviral diseases such as dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever increases globally, controlling their primary vector, Aedes aegypti (L.) (Diptera: Culicidae), is of greater importance than ever before. Mosquito control programs rely heavily on effective adult surveillance to ensure methodological efficacy. The Biogents Sentinel (BGS) trap is the gold standard for surveilling adult Aedes mosquitoes and is commonly deployed worldwide, including during modern 'rear and release' programs. Despite its extensive use, few studies have directly assessed environmental charact…

BACKGROUND: Additional vector control tools (VCTs) are needed to supplement insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) to achieve malaria elimination in many settings. To identify options for expanding the malaria vector control toolbox, we conducted a systematic review of the availability and quality of the evidence for 21 malaria VCTs, excluding ITNs and IRS.
METHODS: Six electronic databases and grey literature sources were searched from January 1, 1980 to September 28, 2015 to identify systematic reviews, Phase I-IV studies, and observational studies that measured

OBJECTIVE: To study the influence of the distance between infested and non-infested areas in the geographical spread of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictuspopulations in the state of S. Paulo. Regional patterns were also studied, considering the determinants related to soil occupation.
METHODS: Information related to the counties in the state of S. Paulo where were concentrations of Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus and counties infested up to the end of each year (1985 to 1995), both in the state of S. Paulo and in the neighboring states, were used. Four indicators were defined to analyze the in

Combining larviciding with insecticide treated nets (ITNs) can reduce malaria transmission. However, most modelling analyses use generalized scenarios rather than incorporating local epidemiological and ecological contexts. In Tanzania and other countries, larviciding is increasingly being prioritized in national strategies, with growing advocacy for its broader implementation, to achieving sustained malaria reduction. District-specific modelling is therefore essential to capture variation in transmission ecology, seasonality, and varying coverage levels, providing evidence that is both rigoro

Many infectious diseases cannot be transmitted from human to human directly, and the transmission needs to be done via a vector. It is well … ito and human. This suggests that the effective control strategies may include intensive treatment, mosquito control, decreasing human contact number with mosquitoes (e.g., using bed nets and preventing mosquito bites), and environmental modification.

BACKGROUND: Dengue, Zika and chikungunya are Aedes-borne arboviruses that pose a major global public health threat. In the absence of effective treatments or universally available vaccines, disease control in sub-Saharan Africa relies primarily on insecticidal vector control. However, sustained insecticide application imposes selection pressure for insecticide resistance that compromises intervention effectiveness. This study assessed the insecticide resistance profile and knockdown resistance of Aedes aegypti populations in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
METHODS: Phenotypic resistance of Ae. aegyp
