Respiratory motion-corrected T1 mapping of the abdomen.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate an approach for motion-corrected T1 mapping of the abdomen that allows for free breathing data acquisition with 100% scan efficiency. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were acquired using a continuous golden radial trajectory and multiple inversion pulses. For the correction of respiratory motion, motion estimation based on a surrogate was performed from the same data used for T1 mapping. Image-based self-navigation allowed for binning and reconstruction of respiratory-resolved images, which were used for the estimation of respiratory motion f…

Shoulder Joint Range of Motion Related to Dementia.

INTRODUCTION: Dementia is caused by various diseases, including Alzheimer's disease dementia (ADD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). We often encounter patients with dementia who have limited shoulder joint range of motion (ROM), especially those with behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). But the relationship between the diseases of dementia and restricted shoulder joint ROM is currently unclear. METHODS: We examined cognitive function and shoulder joint ROM in 234 new outpatients at 7 memory clinics in Japan. We assessed cognitive function using the Mini-Mental State E…

A motion aftereffect from viewing other people's gaze.

Recent work suggests that our brains may generate subtle, false motion signals streaming from other people to the objects of their attention, aiding social cognition. For instance, brief exposure to static images depicting other people gazing at objects made subjects slower at detecting subsequent motion in the direction of gaze, suggesting that looking at someone else's gaze caused a directional motion adaptation. Here we confirm, using a more stringent method, that viewing static images of another person gazing in a particular direction, at an object, produced motion aftereffects in the oppo…

The accuracy of object motion perception during locomotion.

Human observers are capable of perceiving the motion of moving objects relative to the stationary world, even while undergoing self-motion. Perceiving world-relative object motion is complicated because the local optical motion of objects is influenced by both observer and object motion, and reflects object motion in observer coordinates. It has been proposed that observers recover world-relative object motion using global optic flow to factor out the influence of self-motion. However, object-motion judgments during simulated self-motion are biased, as if the visual system cannot completely co…

Intentional Head-Motion Assisted Locomotion for Reducing Cybersickness.

We present an efficient locomotion technique that can reduce cybersickness through aligning the visual and vestibular induced self-motion illusion. Our locomotion technique stimulates proprioception consistent with the visual sense by intentional head motion, which includes both the head's translational movement and yaw rotation. A locomotion event is triggered by the hand-held controller together with an intended physical head motion simultaneously. Based on our method, we further explore the connections between the level of cybersickness and the velocity of self motion through a series of ex…

Biomechanical impact of elbow motion in elbow stiffness.

BACKGROUND: A mechanical block in the elbow due to osteophytes in the olecranon fossa is a common clinical symptom for elbow stiffness. PUR … USIONS: The elbow bears the load created by gravity and muscle contracture in the resting and swing motion. Moreover, extension limitation of stiff elbow increases the load bearing in the resting position and swing motion. Careful surgical management should be considered for meticulous clearance of bony spur around olecranon fossa to resolve the extensio …

Noise and vestibular perception of passive self-motion.

Noise defined as random disturbances is ubiquitous in both the external environment and the nervous system. Depending on the context, noise can degrade or improve information processing and performance. In all cases, it contributes to neural systems dynamics. We review some effects of various sources of noise on the neural processing of self-motion signals at different stages of the vestibular pathways and the resulting perceptual responses. Hair cells in the inner ear reduce the impact of noise by means of mechanical and neural filtering. Hair cells synapse on regular and irregular afferents.…

Motion sickness and postural control among Danish adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Easily available clinical tests to evaluate postural control are needed. Furthermore, motion sickness (MS) and postural control are correlated. The aims of this study were to compare the internal validity of a set of clinical tests of postural control with the internal validity of static posturography and to evaluate possible associations between postural control and MS. METHODS: We included healthy subjects from a primary school in Denmark who completed questionnaires about MS and underwent two rounds of clinical tests of postural control and static posturography using a Tetrax In…

Multi-Criteria Evaluation for Sorting Motion Planner Alternatives.

Automated vehicles are expected to push towards the evolution of the mobility environment in the near future by increasing vehicle stability and decreasing commute time and vehicle fuel consumption. One of the main limitations they face is motion sickness (MS), which can put their wide impact at risk, as well as their acceptance by the public. In this direction, this paper presents the application of motion planning in order to minimise motion sickness in automated vehicles. Thus, an optimal control problem is formulated through which we seek the optimum velocity profile for a predefined road …

Does spinopelvic motion change after total hip arthroplasty?

PURPOSE: Spinopelvic motion plays an important role in functional acetabular cup position after total hip arthroplasty (THA). Sacral slope (SS) has been a useful surrogate for spinopelvic motion. The present study aimed to investigate statistical characteristics of spinopelvic motion before and after THA using changes in SS in supine, standing, and sitting positions. METHODS: A total of 76 patients (88 hips) were assessed. To classify spinopelvic mobility, defined as a change in SS from standing to sitting position (ΔSSstand/sit), 10° ≤ ΔSSstand/sit ≤ 30°, ΔSSstand/sit < 10°, and ΔSSstand/sit…

Perceptual influence of auditory pitch on motion speed.

There is a cross-modal mapping between auditory pitch and many visual properties, but the relationship between auditory pitch and motion speed is unexplored. In this article, the ball and baffle are used as the research objects, and an object collision experiment is used to explore the perceptual influence of auditory pitch on motion speed. Since cross-modal mapping can influence perceptual experience, this article also explores the influence of auditory pitch on action measures. In Experiment 1, 12 participants attempted to release a baffle to block a falling ball on the basis of speed judgme…

Four-Dimensional CT Analysis of Normal Syndesmotic Motion.

BACKGROUND: The syndesmosis ligament complex stabilizes the distal tibiofibular joint while allowing for small amounts of physiologic motion. When injured, malreduction of the syndesmosis is the most important factor that contributes to inferior functional outcomes. Syndesmotic reduction is a dynamic measure, which is not adequately captured by conventional computed tomography (CT). Four-dimensional CT (4DCT) can image joints as they move through range of motion (ROM). The aim of this study was to employ 4DCT to determine in vivo syndesmotic motion with ankle ROM in uninjured ankles. METHODS:…

Visual Vertigo, Motion Sickness, and Disorientation in Vehicles.

Environmental circumstances that result in ambiguity or conflict with the patterns of sensory stimulation may adversely affect the vestibular system. The effect of this conflict in sensory information may be dizziness, a sense of imbalance, nausea, and motion sickness sometimes even to seemingly minor daily head movement activities. In some, it is not only exposure to motion but also the observation of objects in motion around them such as in supermarket aisles or other places with visual commotion; this can lead to dizziness, nausea, or a feeling of motion sickness that is referred to as visu…

Motion Quantification and Automated Correction in Clinical RSOM.

Raster-scan optoacoustic mesoscopy (RSOM) offers high-resolution non-invasive insights into skin pathophysiology, which holds promise for disease diagnosis and monitoring in dermatology and other fields. However, RSOM is quite vulnerable to vertical motion of the skin, which can depend on the part of the body being imaged. Motion correction algorithms have already been proposed, but they are not fully automated, they depend on anatomical segmentation pre-processing steps that might not be performed successfully, and they are not site- specific. Here, we determined for the first time the magnit…

Reduced Leaflet Motion after Transcatheter Aortic-Valve Replacement.

BACKGROUND: Subclinical leaflet thickening and reduced leaflet motion of bioprosthetic aortic valves have been documented by four-dimensional computed tomography (CT). Whether anticoagulation can reduce these phenomena after transcatheter aortic-valve replacement (TAVR) is not known. METHODS: In a substudy of a large randomized trial, we randomly assigned patients who had undergone successful TAVR and who did not have an indication for long-term anticoagulation to a rivaroxaban-based antithrombotic strategy (rivaroxaban [10 mg] plus aspirin [75 to 100 mg] once daily) or an antiplatelet-based …

Moderate acute alcohol intoxication increases visual motion repulsion.

Among the serious consequences of alcohol abuse is the reduced ability to process visual information. Diminished vision from excessive consumption of alcohol has been implicated in industrial, home, and automobile accidents. Alcohol is also generally recognized as an inhibitor in the brain by potentiating GABA-ergic transmission. In this study, we focused on visual motion processing and explored whether moderate alcohol intoxication induced changes in inhibitory mediated motion repulsion in a center-surround configuration. We conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled, within-subjects study …

A Case Study of Severe Space Motion Sickness.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness remains a significant and unpredictable problem during spaceflight. One of the major difficulties in understanding the etiology of space motion sickness has been a lack of data at the time the symptoms occur, i.e., immediately after entry into space and during return to Earth; in these phases of the mission is when critical operational tasks are performed. CASE REPORT: We report here the case of a crewmember who experienced severe motion sickness symptoms immediately after launching into space and for several days into the mission. Verbal reports recorded during an…

Patterned Disordered Cell Motion Ensures Vertebral Column Symmetry.

The biomechanics of posterior embryonic growth must be dynamically regulated to ensure bilateral symmetry of the spinal column. Throughout vertebrate trunk elongation, motile mesodermal progenitors undergo an order-to-disorder transition via an epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition and sort symmetrically into the left and right paraxial mesoderm. We combine theoretical modeling of cell migration in a tail-bud-like geometry with experimental data analysis to assess the importance of ordered and disordered cell motion. We find that increasing order in cell motion causes a phase transition from sy…

Motion Illusion-Evidence towards Human Vestibulo-Thalamic Projections.

Contemporary studies speculated that cerebellar network responsible for motion perception projects to the cerebral cortex via vestibulo-thalamus. Here, we sought for the physiological properties of vestibulo-thalamic pathway responsible for the motion perception. Healthy subjects and the patient with focal vestibulo-thalamic lacunar stroke spun a hand-held rheostat to approximate the value of perceived angular velocity during whole-body passive earth-vertical axis rotations in yaw plane. Vestibulo-ocular reflex was simultaneously measured with high-resolution search coils (paradigm 1). In prim…
