A 57-year-old woman presented with 2 months history of right chest pain with direct tenderness and swelling over the right sternoclavicular joint. She had a 20-year history of skin rash over both soles and palms suggestive of pustulosis palmaris and plantaris without musculoskeletal symptoms. CT scan of the right sternoclavicular joint showed osteolysis of the joint and adjacent sclerosis. 99mTechnetium bone scan was abnormal with increased uptake over the joint and manubrium. She was diagnosed with SAPHO syndrome (synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis, osteitis). This case report emphasiz

Between 1980 and 1988, displacement bone-marrow transplantation was performed on 25 children with Hurler's syndrome (type-1 mucopolysaccharidosis). We describe the musculoskeletal development of 11 of the 12 surviving children and the orthopaedic procedures undertaken to treat progressive thoracolumbar kyphosis, hip subluxation and carpal tunnel syndrome. We found abnormal bone modelling, focal failures of ossification and an avascular disorder of the femoral head in every patient and offer an explanation for these phenomena. Increasing valgus deformity of the knees and progressive generalised

BACKGROUND: Congenital anomalies (CAs) refer to defects that are present in a newborn but occurred during intrauterine life. They can be due to genetic, modifiable environmental or multifactorial causes. There was no prior report of their burden in our state.
AIMS: This study aims to describe the incidence, spectrum, predisposing factors and outcome of CAs in our setting.
METHODS: It was a total population study of all neonates with major birth defects admitted into the unit during the study period. Their clinical-demographic features, diagnoses and outcome were entered into an excel sheet.

BACKGROUND: Working farm dogs are invaluable on New Zealand sheep and beef farms. To date no study describing farm dog population and health has included information about incidence of illness and injury, or risk factors affecting health and career duration. This paper describes the methodology and initial results from TeamMate, a longitudinal study that was designed to address this gap. We describe the study population, husbandry practices, and prevalence of clinical abnormalities on enrolment.
METHODS: Data about the farms, owners, husbandry practices and dogs were collected on farm at appr

Marfan's syndrome is a rare genetic disorder caused by a mutation of the gene FBN1, coding for the protein fibrillin-1. Cardiovascular, musculoskeletal and ophthalmic manifestations are the most commonly observed, but minor diagnostic criteria also include pulmonary manifestations. Pneumothorax, frequently relapsing, affects 5 to 11% of patients. Rib cage abnormalities (pectus excavatum or pectus carinatum) and apical blebs may contribute to their occurrence. Treatment does not require any specific procedure but there is an increased risk of recurrence. Pectus excavatum affects up to 60% of th

The iliopsoas muscle (IPM) is a flexor of the hip joint in dogs that is vulnerable to injury. Intraobserver and interobserver reliability of musculoskeletal ultrasound when evaluating the tendon of insertion of the IPM was studied. The IPM tendons of insertion of a randomly selected cohort were screened by one investigator and recorded. Musculoskeletal ultrasound recordings were separated into two groups of 20 dogs with presumptively normal IPM tendons of insertion and 32 dogs with one or two presumptively abnormal IPM tendons. Recordings were anonymized. The 104 tendons from these 52 dogs wer

The term "children with medical complexity" (CMC) describes a population of heterogeneous genetic and metabolic disorders with multi-system involvement, with shared common abnormalities within the musculoskeletal system. Disorders that affect the central nervous system (CNS) result in abnormal muscular tone, ranging from dystonia and spasticity, to hypotonia, to combinations of both (axial hypotonia with appendicular hypertonia). Abnormal tone can impair movement and function and contribute to development of contractures, progressive scoliosis and hip dislocation. Impaired mobility, chronic il

Our aim was to determine whether abnormalities noted on MRI immediately after reduction for developmental dysplasia of the hip could predict the persistance of dysplasia and aid surgical planning. Scans of 13 hips in which acetabular dysplasia had resolved by the age of four years were compared with those of five which had required pelvic osteotomy for persisting dysplasia. The scans were analysed by two consultant musculoskeletal radiologists who were blinded to the outcome in each child. The postreduction scans highlighted a number of anatomical abnormalities secondary to developmental dyspl

Clubfoot is a common musculoskeletal birth defect for which few causative genes have been identified. To identify the genes responsible for isolated clubfoot, we screened for genomic copy-number variants with the Affymetrix Genome-wide Human SNP Array 6.0. A recurrent chromosome 17q23.1q23.2 microduplication was identified in 3 of 66 probands with familial isolated clubfoot. The chromosome 17q23.1q23.2 microduplication segregated with autosomal-dominant clubfoot in all three families but with reduced penetrance. Mild short stature was common and one female had developmental hip dysplasia. Subt

We report on a 3 generation study of a Tunisian family, in which eight subjects had or have features of Larsen syndrome: three siblings, two females and one male are affected with flattened facies, multiple congenital joint dislocations, and club foot deformities. Five other family members were recognised as being variably affected with the syndrome. Over the three generations, despite the characteristic facial features being the most constant clinical signs of the syndrome, none of those still living had palatal clefts, the multiple infantile deaths in this family, however, were characterised

Renal osteodystrophy is a spectrum of musculoskeletal abnormalities. Bony fractures can occur spontaneously or with minor trauma in this condition. The authors report the first case of balloon kyphoplasty treatment for painful renal osteodystrophy vertebral body collapse secondary to end-stage renal failure on dialysis. The authors have demonstrated that kyphoplasty is a safe procedure for pain management in severe dystrophic patients. In addition, pain treatment with kyphoplasty can be achieved without anatomical restoration of vertebral body height.

BACKGROUND: Early detection and early intervention of musculoskeletal sports injuries is a promising, but underexplored area. Poor conceptual clarity of secondary prevention strategies currently hampers research and clinical application.
METHODS: We conducted a scoping review, aimed at summarizing secondary prevention strategies of musculoskeletal sports injuries into recommendations for researchers, athletes, and clinicians. We searched seven databases for the terms: sport, injury, and early detection/intervention.
RESULTS: Nine studies reported early detection/intervention strategies. Stre

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review summarizes the literature about the transition from psoriasis to psoriatic arthritis (PsA), focusing on musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSUS) for detecting subclinical inflammation and its role in diagnosis and triage of high-risk patients.
RECENT FINDINGS: MSUS effectively detects subclinical musculoskeletal inflammation in patients with psoriasis; however, some of these lesions are non-specific and can be found in healthy individuals. Preliminary evidence suggest that subclinical sonographic findings may predict progression to PsA in psoriasis patients. MSUS can a

Chronic musculoskeletal pain syndromes, including fibromyalgia, are often resistant to conventional medications and invasive therapies. Central hypersensitization, neurotransmitter dysregulation, and autonomic nervous system abnormalities are key pathomechanisms, frequently resulting in widespread pain and a variety of psychosomatic symptoms. Virtual Reality (VR) applications have demonstrated effectiveness in reducing pain, both during and after interventions, and in chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia and back pain. The proposed mechanisms behind VR's effectiveness include distraction an

Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is an inflammatory musculoskeletal disease with both autoimmune and autoinflammatory features. Evidence supports the distinct nature of PsA regarding its clinical, genetic, immunohistochemical, and imaging features. Such features can help to distinguish PsA from other common rheumatic diseases. Apart from peripheral joint involvement, the musculoskeletal lesions in PsA include enthesitis and involvement of the distal interphalangeal joint (frequently associated with nail involvement, dactylitis, and axial involvement). The traditional model of pathogenesis in PsA has

Pediatric gait abnormalities are closely intertwined with musculoskeletal dysfunctions and heightened injury risk, underscoring the urgency of early and accessible screening tools. Here, we develop and validate a video-based semi-supervised Abnormal Gait Recognition Module (AGRM) to address unmet needs in pediatric gait assessment, with a focus on diagnostic performance and clinical interpretability. The AGRM is built on a 3D ResNet backbone, synergistically integrated with a Mean Teacher Module (MTM) to mitigate the limitations of limited labeled clinical data, and a Spatial Hierarchical Pool

BACKGROUND: Lower limb flexibility is known to be decreased in those living in mountainous areas, and musculoskeletal growth is often influenced by lifestyle factors. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the means of transportation to school and lower limb musculoskeletal function and low back pain.
METHODS: During routine medical examinations conducted in two cities in a prefecture in 2016, a questionnaire was administered. The parents of 15,259 students who attended elementary school answered questions evaluating the following parameters: (1) anteflexion limit

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the visualization of penile abnormalities on fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
METHODS: This retrospective study included five fetuses (25+0 to 31+6 gestational weeks) with penile abnormalities, positively depicted on fetal MRI, using prenatal ultrasonography (US) as a standard of reference. On MRI, the penis, as well as the scrotum and testicles, were evaluated. All fetal organs were reviewed to define penile abnormalities as isolated or in association with other anomalies. Furthermore, US and MRI findings were compared.
RESULTS: Posterior hypospadias were de

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) encompass a broad spectrum of conditions affecting bones, joints, and muscles, characterized by significant pain and functional impairment, and have become a major global health burden. In recent years, accumulating evidence has revealed complex bidirectional interactions between depression and musculoskeletal health. This review focuses on depression and delineates how it may influence the pathological progression of MSDs through multiple pathways, including neuroendocrine dysregulation, aberrant inflammatory responses, epigenetic modifications, dysregulated e
