Alligator or squirrel: musically induced fear reveals threat in ambiguous figures.

Extant evidence has shown that fear can influence what we see. Fear can exaggerate threatening visual features or make them more salient. He … to a visually perceived stimulus. In this study happiness and fear were induced using instrumental music, so the findings also suggest that sound can influence vision by influencing emotions.

Voice amplification as a means of reducing vocal load for elementary music teachers.

Music teachers are over four times more likely than classroom teachers to develop voice disorders and greater than eight times more likely to have voice-related problems than the general public. Research has shown that individual voice-use parameters of phonation time, fundamental frequency and vocal intensity, as well as vocal load as calculated by cycle dose and distance dose are significantly higher for music teachers than their classroom teacher counterparts. Finding effective and inexpensive prophylactic measures to decrease vocal load for music teachers is an important aspect for voice p…

Music in the Park. An integrating metaphor for the emerging primary (health) care system.

BACKGROUND: Metaphors are central to the human understanding of complex issues; through the immediate associations they evoke and frame problems and suggest solutions. Our suggestion of Music in the Park as a metaphor for health systems reform brings to the forefront the environmentally diverse but bounded spaces of health services that offer a variety of attractors within their confines, while pushing into the background organizational and economic concerns. REFLECTIONS: Parks, like health services, are embedded in their local landscape, serving their communities, but most importantly parks …

Auditory attraction: activation of visual cortex by music and sound in Williams syndrome.

Williams syndrome is a genetic neurodevelopmental disorder with a distinctive phenotype, including cognitive-linguistic features, nonsocial anxiety, and a strong attraction to music. we preformed functional MRI studies examining brain responses to musical and other types of stimuli in young adults with Williams syndrome and typically developing controls. In Study 1, the Williams syndrome group exhibited unforeseen activations of the visual cortex to musical stimuli, and it was this novel finding that became the focus of two subsequent studies. Using retinotopy, color localizers, and additional…

From sensibility to pathology: the origins of the idea of nervous music around 1800.

Healing powers have been ascribed to music at least since David's lyre, but a systematic discourse of pathological music emerged only at the end of the eighteenth century. At that time, concerns about the moral threat posed by music were partly replaced by the idea that it could over-stimulate a vulnerable nervous system, leading to illness, immorality, and even death. During the Enlightenment, the relationship between the nerves and music was more often put in terms of refinement and sensibility than pathology. However, around 1800, this view was challenged by a medical critique of modern cul…

Music venues and hearing loss: Opportunities for and barriers to improving environmental conditions.

This study explores the opportunities for and barriers to improving environmental conditions in order to reduce the risk for music-induced hearing loss in people who attend music venues. Individual semi-structured interviews were held with 20 representatives of music venues and of governmental organizations, according to a semi-structured interview guide. The interviews were audiotaped, transcribed, and systematically coded using a content-analysis technique. Reported opportunities to reduce music volume included improving the acoustics and installing advanced speaker systems. The most importa…

Music imagery for adults with acute leukemia in protective environments: a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Patients receiving intensive chemotherapy can experience increased distressed related to both the cancer diagnosis and treatment isolation. If not addressed, distress can lead to anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility and possible benefits of a music imagery intervention for patients hospitalized in a protective environment for the treatment of acute leukemia or high-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adults receiving intensive myelosuppressive chemotherapy in a protective environment we…

Lack of efficacy of music to improve sleep: a polysomnographic and quantitative EEG analysis.

An increasing number of studies have been examining non-pharmacological methods to improve the quality of sleep, including the use of music and other types of auditory stimulation. While many of these studies have found significant results, they suffer from a combination of subjective self-report measures as the primary outcome, a lack of proper controls, often combine music with some type of relaxation therapy, or do not randomise subjects to control and treatment conditions. It is therefore difficult to assess the efficacy of music to induce or improve sleep. The present study therefore exam…

Social categorization, self-esteem, and the estimated musical preferences of male adolescents.

The authors investigated the intergroup processes of male adolescents within the context of social identity theory (SIT; H. Tajfel, 1978; H. Tajfel & J. C. Turner, 1979). The participants were English male adolescents (age = 14-15 years). They estimated in-group and out-group musical preferences and evaluated the in-group and out-group along a series of scales. The results showed in-group favoritism effects along the musical preference and evaluative dimensions. The participants reported greater liking for the in-group. Compared with the out-group, they associated the in-group more with positi…

[Musical-verbal hallucinations and their correlation with electroencephalography and PET findings. Case report].

A case is reported of an organic auditory hallucinosis and depressive episode in a man aged 52. A new finding is the correlation of the musical hallucinosis to a central nervous disorder as shown by pathological sphenoidal EEG and 18FDG-PET-examination and not to acquired peripheral hearing deficit as often reported before.

Mechanism of a musical systolic murmur caused by a degenerated porcine bioprosthetic valve.

The cause of a musical (cooing) murmur produced by a degenerated bioprosthetic valve in the mitral position was investigated. Spectral analysis of the murmur recorded at the chest wall at the site of the maximum palpable impulse showed virtually all sound in a narrow frequency band around the dominant frequency of 158 hertz. The same valve, surgically removed and mounted in the mitral position in a pulse duplicating system, produced an audible musical murmur detected by a phonocatheter in the atrial chamber. Nearly all of the sound-pressure occurred in a narrow band of frequency around 145 her…

Music intervention as a therapeutic approach to cognitive impairments in APP/PS1 mice.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is typified by progressive deterioration in memory and executive capacities. Although music-based interventions represent a promising non-pharmacological strategy for AD, the underlying mechanisms remain insufficiently understood. APP/PS1 transgenic mice were subjected to 30 consecutive days of musical stimulation, with wild-type C57BL/6 J and untreated APP/PS1 mice serving as controls. Neurobehavioral assessments revealed that music intervention substantially improved memory performance in transgenic AD mice. Mechanistically, music attenuated oxidative stress in both …

Neurophysiological and biological effects of music-based interventions in ADHD: a mini review.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is increasingly recognized as a lifespan neurodevelopmental condition. Because musical perception and production engage auditory, attentional, motor, emotional, and regulatory systems simultaneously, music-based interventions have emerged as promising complementary approaches for ADHD. However, their underlying neurophysiological and systemic biological correlates remain insufficiently understood. This mini review synthesizes evidence on behavioral, neurophysiological, and biological effects of music-based interventions in ADHD using a narrative …

Effectiveness of Music Therapy for Delirium in Acute Hospital Settings: A Scoping Review.

Background: Music therapy is a non-pharmacological psychosocial intervention that is increasingly recognised for its role in supporting older adults in acute hospital settings. Engagement with music, whether through passive listening, preferred recorded music, live music, or creative music therapy, has been linked to improvements in behavioural, cognitive, and emotional outcomes during episodes of delirium. Although there are reviews on non-pharmacological approaches to delirium, few have focused specifically on music therapy within acute hospital environments. Methods: This scoping review exa…

Music-based intervention as an adjunctive therapy in people with epilepsy: A scoping review.

Epilepsy is a major neurological disorder that affects individuals across all age groups and can significantly impair their quality of life. Although pharmacological treatments are available, there remains a need for complementary non-pharmacological lifestyle interventions. Music-based intervention (MBI) is a possible option, as it is non-invasive, cost-effective, and easily implemented. This scoping review aims to identify and describe MBIs used in the management of epilepsy. A systematic search was conducted from April 9 to June 10, 2025, using two electronic databases: Ovid Medline and Sco…
