A case of yellow nail syndrome with dramatically improved nail discoloration by oral clarithromycin.

An 80-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with pneumonia and exacerbation of sinobronchial syndrome (SBS). She presented with yellow discoloration of the nail beds of all fingers and toes, and her nails were recognized as growing slowly. Chest X-ray revealed bronchiectasis in the bilateral lower lobe and bilateral pleural effusion. We diagnosed her as having yellow nail syndrome (YNS), based on the triad of yellow nails, lymphedema, and lung disease. After treatment with antibiotics [ampicillin/sulbactam and clarithromycin (CAM)] for pneumonia and SBS, her general condition improved, a…

Association between morphological changes of nail and nail arsenic level in patients with arsenicosis.

This case-control type of analytical study was conducted in the Department of Dermatology and Venereology, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Dhaka, Bangladesh to find out the association between morphological changes of nail and nail arsenic level in arsenicosis patients. Majority of arsenicosis patients were male (56.67%). The mean age of the cases was 43.07+/-13.73 years. Nail changes were found in 26.67% of cases, most were nail dystrophy (23.33%) and rest were Mee's line (3.34%). There was significant difference between cases with or without nail changes and nail arsenic level.

Tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis with a retrograde intramedullary nail: a biomechanical analysis of the effect of nail length.

BACKGROUND: Fatigue fractures of the tibia have been observed at the level of the proximal end of the nail after successful tibiocalcaneal a … to 50 Nm for each intact specimen after nail insertion and after proximal locking of the nail. The nails were then exchanged between the specimens of the same pairs and the experiment was repeated to insure uniformity. RESULTS: The standard length locked nail increased the principal strain of the posterior cortex of the tibia at the level of the proxi …

Allergic onycholysis and paronychia caused by cyanoacrylate nail glue, but not by photobonded methacrylate nails.

Artificial acrylic nails may induce side effects such as fingertip dermatitis, periungual dermatitis, onycholysis, paresthesiae, Raynaud's phenomenon, ectopic facial involvement, and allergic contact dermatitis. We present a patient who developed allergic onycholysis from a cyanoacrylate used in a nail adhesive. She was able to use photobonded sculptured nails because they contain methacrylates that do not cross-react with cyanoacrylates.

Yellow nail syndrome: the nail that grows half as fast grows twice as thick.

We report a case of a 51-year-old man with yellow nail syndrome (YNS).1 During a 23-week period of study, the dynamics of thumbnail growth were compared between one affected thumb and the normal contralateral thumb. Longitudinal nail growth was normal (0.46 mm/week) in the normal thumb and double that of the affected thumb (0.23 mm/week). Thickness of nail at the free edge in the affected thumb (0.97 mm) was twice that of the normal thumb (0.57 mm). Within the nail plate in the dorso-ventral axis there were 50% more cells in the affected thumb (358) in comparison with the contralateral control

Enhancing Cosmetic and Functional Improvement of Recalcitrant Nail Lichen Planus With Resin Nail.

Lichen planus (LP) is one of the few conditions that may cause permanent and debilitating nail loss. Recurrence is common despite treatment with first-line therapies including intralesional and systemic corticosteroids. We describe application of a resin nail for recalcitrant LP of the fingernail for improved cosmesis and functionality.

Nail Reconstruction With Nail Bed Graft From Big Toe: A Case Report.

Fingertip injuries with loss of the nail bed can lead to permanent deformities or absent nail formation. This is a case report of a 17-year-old female who sustained a blunt injury to the left second index finger with nail avulsion. The patient underwent nail reconstruction with a split-thickness graft from the sterile matrix of the left great toe. Postoperatively both the donor and the recipient sites appear to be healing appropriately. Since nail reconstruction with toe graft is rarely performed, this case is of particular interest due to its excellent postoperative outcomes.

Green nail syndrome on the nail plate and bed related with Enterococcus and Fusarium coinfection.

The green nail syndrome is characterized by discolouration of the nail plate frequently accompanied by chronic paronychia and onycholysis. The cause could be either bacterial or fungal infection. A 24-year-old woman presented to the clinic with a history of discolouration of the nail plate and bed accompanied by onycholysis. Scrapings from the nail were taken twice, microscopically examined, and cultured on media for isolation and identification of bacteria and fungi. The first sample gave positive results for Enterococcus spp. After treatment and a lack of complete recovery of the nail, secon

Treatment of Displaced Intra-articular Calcaneal Fractures With an Interlocking Nail (C-Nail).

OBJECTIVES: To assess the outcome of the sinus tarsi approach and C-Nail fixation of displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures (DIACFs). DESIGN: Prospective study. SETTING: University Trauma Department. PATIENTS: Sixty-four patients (mean age 44.3 years, 48 men and 16 women) with 75 DIACFs were treated between October 1, 2016 and December 31, 2018. INTERVENTION: In all cases, the posterior facet was reduced through the sinus tarsi approach and fixed with one or 2 screws. After reducing all fragments to the articular block, the final fixation was performed percutaneously with C-Nail, lo

Intramedullary Nailing of Paediatric Tibial Fractures: Comparison between Flexible and Rigid Nails.

PURPOSE: To describe patient characteristics and to compare outcomes of children undergoing rigid intramedullary nailing of tibial fractures as compared with those operated on using elastic intramedullary nailing. METHODS: A retrospective review of 26 children who have undergone flexible intramedullary nailing of tibial fractures and 30 children with rigid nailing at our university hospital between 2008 and 2017. The patient charts and radiographs were evaluated to identify demographic characteristics and several variables were measured preoperatively, as well as 6-12 weeks postoperatively in

Trends in nail services may cause dermatitis: not your mother's nail polish.

The advent of acrylate-based nail treatments-known as gels, dips, or shellac-has resulted in an uptick in nail-related acrylate allergy. Acrylate dermatitis related to nail services can affect both clients and technicians and can present on the hands, fingers, and wrists, as well as on the face and neck. Nail acrylate allergy occurs from sensitization to acrylate monomers; 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate, ethyl cyanoacrylate, and others have been identified as relevant allergens. Patch testing with HEMA and ethyl cyanoacrylate can screen for nail acrylate aller
