INTRODUCTION: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) can be used to treat several neurological and psychiatric conditions such as Parkinson's disease, epilepsy and obsessive-compulsive disorder; however, limited work has been done to assess the disparities in DBS access and implementation. The goal of this scoping review is to identify sources of disparity in the clinical provision of DBS.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A scoping review will be conducted based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses-extension for Scoping Reviews methodology. Relevant studies will be identified

Incarcerated populations in Canada face significant health and social challenges during transitions into and out of correctional facilities. These transitions around facilities pose disproportionate barriers to care for people living with HIV. Further research is crucial to comprehend these challenges and reimagine care concepts for people who experience structural marginalization. In this article, experiences of transitions into and out of Alberta correctional facilities for people living with HIV are explored using narrative inquiry. Conducted in a Western Canadian city from 2021 to 2022, th

PURPOSE: This longitudinal study investigated the trajectory of Spanish article accuracy in Spanish-English dual language learners (DLLs) from preschool to first grade, addressing the need for longitudinal data on the variability of Spanish grammatical skills in DLLs in English immersion classrooms.
METHOD: Language sample analysis was conducted on 336 Spanish and English narrative retells elicited from 31 Spanish-English DLLs (range: 45-85 months). Growth curve models captured within- and between-individual change in article accuracy from the beginning of preschool to the end of first grade.

When someone is caught and punished for a sexual offense, recidivism prevention is of high priority. While a growing body of qualitative research has investigated the desistance process of those who have sexually offended, few studies have examined the narratives of individuals who have sexually recidivated in order to understand how they make sense of their reoffending. This study aims to fill this gap in the literature by exploring the recidivism process and broader life stories of 16 imprisoned men through semi-structured interviews. The results demonstrate how these men explain their recen

ObjectiveInformation regarding how caregivers cope when using presurgical infant orthopedic (PSIO) appliances is sparse. This study aimed to understand caregivers' perspectives and experiences with contemporary PSIO treatment.DesignPSIO videos shared on the YouTube™ platform were used as the data source. Videos with caregivers were identified (n = 21) and portions with caregiver narratives were transcribed. This was followed by the application of a six-step thematic analysis as conceptualized by Braun and Clarke (2006, 2019).ResultsTwo themes were identified from the caregiver narratives in th

BACKGROUND: Personal narratives play an essential role in children's social and academic development. However, children with Down syndrome have ongoing challenges with constructing and communicating personal narratives.
METHODS: Using a single-case multiple-probe across participants design, we examined whether a targeted intervention could improve both micro- and macro-structural aspects of personal narratives from Chinese adolescents with Down syndrome.
RESULTS: All three participants demonstrated high treatment effects in two macrostructural narrative outcomes (i.e., narrative element comp

Cancer family caregivers dwell in an evolving landscape of ambiguity and in-betweenness, as "betwixt and between," in a space of unknowing. This space of unknowing exists within a transformational threshold of liminality, between what was known prior to the cancer and what will be known and embodied in the future. Theoretically grounded in Unitary Caring Science, this study used narrative inquiry alongside photo elicitation to cocreate cancer caregiver narratives and identify themes of liminality. Four thematic threads of liminality were identified as woven within and across the cancer caregiv

BACKGROUND: Speech and language are interconnected systems, and language disorder often co-occurs with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) and non-CAS speech sound disorders (SSDs). Potential trade-off effects between speech and language in connected speech in children without overt language disorder have been less explored.
METHOD: Story retell narratives from 24 children (aged 5;0-6;11 [years;months]) with CAS, non-CAS SSD, and typical development were analyzed in Systematic Analysis of Language Transcripts (SALT) regarding morphosyntactic complexity (mean length of C-unit in words [MLCU]), l

BACKGROUND: Caregiving carried out by adults for other adults is increasing around the world as the demographics of many industrialized countries shift toward an older population with escalating care needs toward the end of life. Although much has been written about caregiving, few studies document the experiences of providing care as narrated by the caregivers.
AIM: To explore the everyday experiences of older adults serving as primary informal caregivers to significant others.
METHODS: A process of narrative inquiry was used via repeated interviews with three older women caregivers providi

PURPOSE: Speech-language pathologists know much more about children's development of fictional narratives than they do about children's development of personal narratives and the role these personal narratives play in academic success, social-emotional development, and self-regulation. The purpose of this tutorial is to provide clinicians with strategies for assessing and developing children's and adolescents' personal narratives.
METHOD: This tutorial reviews the literature on (a) the development of autobiographical event narratives and life stories, (b) factors that contribute to developmen

This case report is the story of my son's alleged abuse, told from my perspective. At the time, Jordan, a boy with Down syndrome, was 14 years old when his disclosure of sexual abuse by a school employee occurred. As part of the healing process, I use autoethnography to tell the story. I also describe and discuss a school-based program, which I developed and deliver, to provide sexual health promotion and sexual abuse prevention to adolescents with developmental disabilities.

The study investigated theory of mind and central coherence abilities in adults with high-functioning autism (HFA) or Asperger syndrome (AS) using naturalistic tasks. Twenty adults with HFA/AS correctly answered significantly fewer theory of mind questions than 20 controls on a forced-choice response task. On a narrative task, there were no differences in the proportion of mental state words between the two groups, although the participants with HFA/AS were less inclined to provide explanations for characters' mental states. No between-group differences existed on the central coherence questio

PURPOSE: Speech-language pathologists often adopt narrative tasks to assess bilingual children's language skills. However, limited research guides clinical decisions about elicitation method, assessment language, and interpretation of results for specific bilingual populations. The present study examined the impact of elicitation method (tell vs. retell) and language (Mandarin vs. English) on macro- and microstructure narrative skills in Mandarin-English bilingual children.
METHOD: We collected narrative tell and retell samples from 79 Mandarin-English bilingual children using the Multilingua

This study concludes a two-part interdisciplinary study examining the relationship between religious beliefs, actions, and health behaviors. Through a literature review, secondary data, and available media narratives, it examines the reactions of some African and North American Neo-Pentecostals during the pandemic. Part 1 revealed that the causes of anti-COVID-19 narratives, resistance, and hesitancy are historical, social, economic, theological, and technological (new media) (Orogun, 2026). This final exercise (Part 2) responds to the narratives and causes from public health impact and spirit

Deaf epistemology, which focuses on the unique ways deaf individuals navigate and experience the auditory world, has become a critical area of study in recent years, particularly in the U.S. This literature review explores key themes in deaf U.S. epistemology, focusing on the comparison between traditional (hearing-centered) epistemology and deaf epistemology, as well as the influences of identity, culture, and sign language. Findings reveal that deaf epistemology in the U.S. is deeply shaped by identity, cultural pride, Deafhood, and the recognition of American Sign Language and situated home

OBJECTIVE: This study explored how graduate clinicians developed relational competencies while facilitating the My Story Project, an evidence-based narrative intervention in which clinicians support people with aphasia to co-construct personal life stories.
METHODS: Using reflexive thematic analysis, focus group data from 11 graduate students in speech-language pathology who served as story coaches were analyzed. Each coach facilitated weekly virtual story co-construction sessions with one person with aphasia during a clinical practicum. Coaches received training in the relationship between n

BACKGROUND: Posterior fossa tumours (PFT), among the most common childhood brain tumours, place children at risk of speech, language, and communication difficulties, often described in relation to cerebellar mutism syndrome (CMS) but also seen in children without mutism. Narrative ability refers to the capacity to understand, create, and share stories. Narratives can be analysed at the macrostructural level, capturing structure and content, and the microstructural level, reflecting, for example, morphosyntax and lexicon. Narrative ability has not previously been investigated in children with P
