Atypical presentation of cutaneous meningioma.

Cutaneous meningiomas are rare tumors of ectopic meningeal tissue in the dermis or subcutis and are most commonly located on the scalp and around the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. We present a case of cutaneous meningioma with an unusual presentation on the upper arm, but with positivity for epithelial membrane antigen to support the diagnosis of meningioma. Lack of pancytokeratin AE1/3 and p63 allowed us to rule out a keratinocytic tumor, such as squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma. The absence of smooth muscle actin, FXIIIa, CD163, and CD34 allowed us to rule out a leiomyoma, der

Carcinosarcoma Arising from Inverted Papilloma in a Patient with History of Radiotherapy for Sinonasal Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

BACKGROUND Carcinosarcoma of the sinonasal tract is an extremely rare malignant neoplasm; it is often designated as carcinoma with spindle cell or sarcomatoid features. We report a case of carcinosarcoma arising in a pre-existing inverted Schneiderian papilloma in the left maxillary antrum and nasal cavity of a 72-year old male patient. CASE REPORT The patient had a significant history of radiotherapy for squamous cell carcinoma in the sinonasal area, 3 decades ago. The patient presented with chief complaints of left nasal blockage, nasal discharge, anosmia, and occasional epistaxis. Computed

[Dermoscopic features of eccrine poroma].

Eccrine poroma is a benign adnexal neoplasm that clinically may mimic malignant skin tumors such as squamous cell carcinoma and amelanotic melanoma. The dermoscopic features of pigmented and nonpigmented eccrine poroma have recently been described. We present 2 cases of eccrine poroma, with their dermoscopic features. The lesions were characterized by multiple red lacunes and a polymorphous vascular pattern in both cases. Dermoscopy can improve the clinical diagnosis of this benign adnexal skin tumor.

Solitary metastasis of lung carcinoma to the internal auditory canal.

We report a case of solitary metastasis of lung carcinoma into the internal auditory canal. On admission, the 60-year-old patient was complaining about a rapidly developing hearing loss with ipsilateral facial nerve paralysis. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an intracanalicular tumor, which was interpreted as vestibular schwannoma. After tumor resection, the histopathologic examination revealed a metastasis of a squamous cell carcinoma. Computed tomographic scan and bronchoscopy identified an asymptomatic primary pulmonary neoplasm.

A case report of esophageal cancer in a patient with pemphigus vulgaris: A coincidence or something beyond that?

BACKGROUND: Pemphigus is a group of rare but serious autoimmune blistering disorders, affecting skin and mucus membrane. Different reports have been published in respect to the coexistence of pemphigus with neoplasms, especially lympho-proliferative ones. CASE: Here, we have reported a patient previously diagnosed with pemphigus vulgaris (PV) who developed esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). CONCLUSION: Dyspepsia and dysphagia in patients with PV might not be merely due to pemphigus erosions or simply an adverse effect of systemic corticosteroid such as irritant or candidal esophagitis

Paraneoplastic pemphigus associated with uterine carcinoma.

Paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP) is an autoimmune blistering disease characterized by severe mucous membrane involvement, polymorphous skin eruptions, and underlying neoplasms, usually those of lymphoreticular system. Cases of PNP associated with solid cancer are extremely rare. A 46-year-old woman presented with severe stomatitis, pseudomembranous conjunctivitis, and polymorphous skin eruptions. Histologic, immunofluorescence, and immunoblot analyses confirmed the diagnosis of PNP. Whole-body examination revealed squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix, but no hematologic tumors. Complete

Radiology of uncommon esophageal neoplasms.

The radiographic appearance of 16 uncommon primary esophageal tumors (4 adenoid cystic carcinomas, 3 adenoacanthomas, 4 small cell carcinomas, 2 adenopapillary carcinomas, adenocarcinoma, mucoepidermoid carcinoma and malignant melanoma), is presented. These tumors were found in a retrospective study of 270 esophageal neoplasms. Sufficient radiographic, histologic and clinical data was available to substantiate primary esophageal origin of the tumors. Cylindromas tender to have a smooth surface and either funneled or polypoid appearance. None of the tumors, however, had radiographic appearance

Prevalence of pulmonary nodules in dogs with malignant neoplasia as determined by CT.

In order to estimate the prevalence of pulmonary nodules in dogs with nonpulmonary malignant neoplasia, medical record descriptions of CT findings in dogs diagnosed with nonpulmonary malignant neoplasia were reviewed retrospectively. A total of 536 dogs were sampled from a single hospital. For malignant neoplasms with >10 affected individuals, prevalence of multiple pulmonary nodules at first CT was hemangiosarcoma 24 of 58 (41%), osteosarcoma 14 of 55 (26%), carcinoma 20 of 80 (25%), histiocytic sarcoma five of twenty-one (24%), soft tissue sarcoma 13 of 57 (23%), adenocarcinoma 11 of 60 (18%

Sporotrichoid Keratoacanthomas: Case Report and Review of Neoplasms Presenting in a Sporotrichoid Pattern.

Sporotrichosis is a fungal infection known for its distinct pattern of infectious skin nodules. Several conditions can present with lesions that appear in a sporotrichoid pattern. An 82-year-old man that presented with three cutaneous nodules on his right leg in a sporotrichoid manner is described; biopsy of each lesion revealed a keratoacanthoma. In addition to keratoacanthomas, other neoplasms-albeit rarely-may be observed to occur in a sporotrichoid manner. These included squamous cell carcinoma (three patients), lymphoma (two patients), and one patient with each of the following: epithelio

Postradiation Histiocytic Sarcoma in the Setting of Muir-Torre Syndrome.

Hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal carcinoma (HNPCC) is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder characterized by a predisposition towards colorectal carcinoma and other extracolonic neoplasms. Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is a very rare hematologic neoplasm characterized by a malignant proliferation of cells with histiocytic differentiation. We present the case of a 62-year-old male with previous diagnosis of MTS who presented with metastatic colorectal adenocarcinoma, bilateral papillary renal cell carcinoma, and a new squamous cell carcinoma of the scalp, treated with resection and adjuvant radia

Ectopic gastric squamous metaplasia with concomitant well-differentiated adenocarcinoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Gastric squamous metaplasia is a rare condition whose clinical significance and malignant potential remain unclear. Most reported cases are located in the cardia and are continuous with the esophageal squamous epithelium. Ectopic gastric squamous metaplasia, defined as lesions discontinuous from the esophagus, is exceedingly rare, and its association with gastric neoplasms has not been well characterized. CASE PRESENTATION: An 81-year-old woman with a history of Helicobacter pylori eradication underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy for gastric cancer screening. A 20-mm discolored, s

Bazex syndrome: acrokeratosis paraneoplastica.

The focus of this article is acrokeratosis paraneoplastica, one of two disorders that have acquired the eponym Bazex syndrome. To date, all of the patients reported in the literature have had an underlying neoplasm, most commonly squamous cell carcinoma of the upper aerodigestive tract. In this review of 113 cases of acrokeratosis paraneoplastica (mean age, 61 years; 105 males, 8 females), the psoriasiform lesions preceded the diagnosis of the associated malignancy in 73 (67%) of 109 patients, whereas the cutaneous manifestations followed the diagnosis of the neoplasm in only 16 (15%) of 109;

Three cases of malignant neoplasm, pneumonitis, and pancytopenia during treatment with low-dose methotrexate.

A 77-year-old man with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was treated with low-dose methotrexate (7.5-15 mg per week). After 15 months a diagnosis of urothelial carcinoma of the bladder was made; after a further 6 months pneumonitis and pancytopenia developed. The patient died due to massive pulmonary hemorrhage. A malignant teratoma was diagnosed in a 65-year-old asthmatic man 16 months after initiation of methotrexate therapy (15 mg per week). The patient died 4 months later due to fulminant progression of the neoplasm. A third malignant neoplasm (dermal squamous cell carcinoma) was seen

A Novel Prognostic Risk Model for Cervical Cancer Based on Immune Checkpoint HLA-G-Driven Differentially Expressed Genes.

Human leukocyte antigen G (HLA-G) is a potential checkpoint molecule that plays a key role in cervical carcinogenesis. The purpose of this study was to construct and validate a prognostic risk model to predict the overall survival (OS) of cervical cancer patients, providing a reference for individualized clinical treatment that may lead to better clinical outcomes. HLA-G-driven differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were obtained from two cervical carcinoma cell lines, namely, SiHa and HeLa, with stable overexpression of HLA-G by RNA sequencing (RNA-seq). The biological functions of these HLA-G

Proliferating Pilar Tumor in an Atypical Location.

Proliferative pilar tumors are rare skin neoplasms with very few reported cases and, therefore, limited evidence. They derive from the outer root sheath of the hair follicle and usually manifest as a benign lesion although rarely they can become malignant. Macroscopically, they can be confused with a squamous cell carcinoma, being the histopathological assessment the main diagnostic tool to differentiate them. The aim of this case report is to present a case of malignant proliferative pilar tumor in an atypical location, as well as to describe the diagnostic and therapeutic approach. In this w

Complete Pathologic Response of Squamous Cell Carcinoma Abutting an Internal Mammary Bypass Graft.

We present a case of an advanced squamous cell carcinoma encroaching on a patient's left internal mammary artery bypass graft. Tumor board consensus was to proceed with 2 cycles of neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by resection. Intraoperatively, the left internal mammary artery bypass could not be safely dissected from the adjacent pleura, but frozen sections were negative for malignant transformation. Final pathologic examination showed a complete pathologic response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy, and surveillance imaging is now negative for recurrence 5 years postoperatively. Although maligna

Reflectance confocal microscopy of an inverted follicular keratosis mimicking a squamous cell carcinoma.

Distinguishing between benign and malignant neoplasms of the skin is a daily challenge to dermatologists. With the use of a dermatoscope and other imaging devices, the diagnosis is often more precise. The confocal microscope is a device that uses a near-infrared laser to perform noninvasive imaging of the skin. The benefit is that the images immediately provide additional, cellular-level information that can assist in diagnosis. However, lesions may share overlapping characteristics on confocal microscopy, and hence, benign lesions can still display confocal features concerning for a cancerous

Calcinospherules: A Unique Morphology of Dystrophic Calcification That Mimics Deep Fungal Infection.

Dystrophic calcification may occur in association with cutaneous neoplasms. We report the case of a 50-year-old woman with unusual appearing dystrophic calcification that was mistaken for coccidiomycosis during Mohs micrographic surgery for an invasive squamous cell carcinoma on the lower lip. The term "calcinospherule" is suggested as a term to describe the round calcified bodies found within the lesion that mimicked spherules with endospores characteristic of Coccidioides imitis infection. Both the dermatopathologist and Mohs micrographic surgeon should be aware of this entity as well as oth

Nail tumors.

Most neoplasms of the nail apparatus have different clinical appearances, courses, and biological behaviors as compared with similar tumors located elsewhere on the skin. Some of these tumors are unique to the nail, such as onychomatricoma. As a general rule, benign lesions respect the general architecture of the nail apparatus, whereas malignant ones are destructive. Our review covers the most common nail tumors, from benign ones to the most frequent nail malignancy, the squamous cell carcinoma, which actually is the greatest simulator. We will also discuss new approaches to the diagnosis and

A primary squamous cell carcinoma of the trachea: case report and review of the literature.

Primary windpipe tumour is extremely rare. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common malignant form, especially in smokers. The radiological appearance of these neoplasms can be classified as intra-luminal, wall-thickening, exophytic form; the majority of the lesions are obstructive in nature and then tend to extra-luminal invasion. This tumour is usually diagnosed late on account of delayed specific symptoms: haemoptysis, dyspnoea, coughing, hoarseness, stridor. Surgery, followed by adjuvant radiotherapy, is the treatment of choice; primary radiotherapy, in inoperable cases, can represent a
