Spinal cord (SC) segmentectomy was performed at ThX level in 28 rats. The scar formation in place of surgery and the degree of restoration of anatomical integrity were studied in control rats (group I) and in rats, in which SC defect was replaced by either Spherogel neuromatrix (group II) or Spherogel containing dispersed embryonic nerve cells (group II). While in group I rats by weeks 1-2 SC defect was filled with fibrin masses, in rats of experimental groups II and III the formation of connective tissue scar was found by the same time. By weeks 10-11 these animals demonstrated partial restor

Thirty-six patients with a peripheral localized nerve lesion (18 of median nerve, 7 of ulnar nerve, 2 of radial nerve, 1 of lateral cutaneous brachii nerve, 1 of sciatic nerve, 5 of peroneal nerve and 2 of tibial nerve), were evaluated by Computed Tomography (CT). We used a high resolution scanner (Siemens Somatom CR) and we performed 2mm thickness slices. Sagittal and coronal reconstructed images were obtained too. Thirty-two out of 36 patients underwent surgery. CT scan was useful in all cases in defining the relationship between nerve lesions and surrounding tissues and in planning surgical

BACKGROUND: Peripheral nerve tissue engrafted into the central nervous system may provide regenerative effects in various CNS injury models or in a clinical trial using autologous sural nerve tissue grafts implanted into the substantia nigra of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) as an adjuvant to Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS).
NEW METHOD: We describe a proof-of-concept neuro-avatar animal model to inform ongoing and future clinical trials and study the survival, biodistribution, and host responses to allografts or xenografts of human peripheral nerve fascicles. Human peripheral nerve tissu…

BACKGROUND: Neuropathic symptoms after median nerve repair at the wrist or secondary to refractory carpal tunnel syndrome may become debilitating. These symptoms develop because of perineural adhesions, intraneural fibrosis, and fixation of the nerve to the transverse carpal ligament after surgery, and often require neurolysis. Interposition of vascularized soft tissue over the median nerve at the time of neurolysis prevents recurrence of such adhesions. The synovial flap, fashioned from the synovial lining of the flexor tendon sheath, is an ideal tissue for this purpose. Previous authors have

Tumors of nerves are classified into benign (schwannoma and neurofibroma) and malignant nerve sheath tumors. Schwannomas almost always occur as solitary lesions, whereas neurofibromas may occur alone or in a greater number, especially in patients with the peripheral form of von Recklinghausen's disease. Benign nerve sheath tumors often present as asymptomatic, slowly growing soft tissue masses. Although malignant nerve sheath tumors are relatively rare, a sudden increase in the size of a lesion, in particular in a patient with neurofibromatosis, should raise the suspicion of malignant change.

A comparative study of the effect of tissue and suspension allografts of an embryonic spinal cord on regeneration of nerve fibers of impaired (by application of a ligature) sciatic nerve in rats was conducted. It was demonstrated that unlike tissue grafts that reach a large volume 21 and 60 days after transplantation, suspension grafts do not inhibit the growth of axons of the recipient to the periphery. It was established that introduction of a suspension of dissociated cells of the spinal cord embryonic anlages (but not fragments of these anlages) into the impaired sciatic nerve in rats resu

Pain originating from spinal nerve roots demonstrates multiple pathogeneses. Distinctions in the patho-anatomy, biomechanics, and pathophysiology of spinal nerve roots contribute to pathology, diagnosis, and management of root-related pain. Root-related pain can emerge from the tension events in the dura mater and nerve tissue associated with primary disc related disorders. Conversely, secondary disc-related degeneration can produce compression on the nerve roots. This compression can result in chemical and mechanical consequences imposed on the nervous tissue within the spinal canal, lateral …

Raman spectroscopy can be used for analysis of objects by detecting the vibrational spectrum using label-free methods. This imaging method was applied to analysis of peripheral nerve regeneration by examining the sciatic nerve in vitro and in vivo. Raman spectra of intact nerve tissue had three particularly important peaks in the range 2800-3000 cm-1. Spectra of injured sciatic nerves showed significant changes in the ratio of these peaks. Analysis of cellular spectra suggested that the spectrum for sciatic nerve tissue reflects the axon and myelin components of this tissue. Immunohistochemica…

Among the anatomical spaces in the head and neck area, the buccal space has often been studied in dental/oral surgery and cosmetic surgery because it contains the facial vessels, mandibular and facial nerves, and adipose tissue called the buccal fat pad. In addition, as the space can communicate with other spaces, it can be significant in infections. Although the anatomy of the buccal space has been reported in several studies, there have been discrepancies concerning its boundaries, and its communications have often been overlooked. The aim of this review is to examine the anatomy of buccal s

Neurogenic tumors represent a broad ill-defined category of neoplasms that includes tumors of Schwann cell and/or neuroblastic derivation, as well as neoplasms that typically develop in the central nervous system, but rarely present in ectopic sites including the mediastinum. Neurogenic tumors may occur at many different anatomic sites, but the mediastinum represents a uniquely challenging site given the complex anatomy. Additionally, some of these neoplasms may present with multicentric involvement in the context of genetic syndromes, including NF1, NF2 and schwanomatosis. Most of these devel

Anatomic dissection of the posterior interosseous nerve in 26 cadaver forearms was performed to assess variability in location, diameter, and branching patterns of the nerve. The purpose of our study was to determine the anatomic reliability of the posterior interosseous nerve at the distal forearm level as a potential donor nerve graft for segmental digital nerve loss. The nerve was located in a separate fascicle sheath in the deep radial aspect at the fourth dorsal compartment in all specimens. It ranged from 1 to 5 mm in diameter with one to five fascicles present (15 of 26 specimens had a

Peripheral nerve regeneration is a complex physiological process. Single-function nerve scaffolds often struggle to quickly adapt to the imbalanced regenerative microenvironment, leading to slow nerve regeneration and limited functional recovery. In this study, we demonstrate a "pleiotropic gas transmitter" strategy based on endogenous reactive oxygen species (ROS), which trigger the on-demand H2S release at the defect area for transected peripheral nerve injury (PNI) repair through concurrent neuroregeneration and neuroprotection processing. This H2S delivery system consists of an H2S donor (

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pain caused by trauma to nerves and tissue around the surgical site is a major problem. Perioperative steps to reduce postoperative pain include local anesthetics and opioids, the latter of which are addictive and have contributed to the opioid epidemic. Cryoneurolysis is a nonopioid and long-lasting treatment for reducing postoperative pain. However, current methods of cryoneurolysis are invasive, technically demanding, and are not tissue-selective. This project aims to determine whether ice slurry can be used as a novel, injectable, drug-free, and tissue-selective m
