Simultaneous determination of promethazine, chlorpromazine, and perphenazine by multivariate calibration methods and derivative spectrophotometry.

Partial least-squares (PLS) regression, singular value decomposition-based PLS, and an artificial neural network (ANN) were tested as calibration procedures for the simultaneous determination of promethazine, chlorpromazine, and perphenazine by both conventional and derivative spectrophotometry. Comparison of the results revealed that the application of the ANN to the derivative spectra is superior to the application of the 2 PLS methods used. Different binary and ternary synthetic mixtures of the phenothiazine drugs in pure form and in tablets were analyzed by the proposed method, and accepta

Fast and accessible morphology-free functional fluorescence imaging analysis.

Optical calcium imaging is a powerful tool for recording neural activity across a wide range of spatial scales, from dendrites and spines to whole-brain imaging through two-photon and widefield microscopy. Traditional methods for analyzing functional calcium imaging data rely heavily on spatial features, such as the compact shapes of somas, to extract regions of interest and their associated temporal traces. This spatial dependency can introduce biases in time trace estimation and limit the applicability of these methods across different neuronal morphologies and imaging scales. To address the

Progressive Loss of Sensitivity to Electrical Stimulation After Cochlear Implantation in X-Linked Incomplete Partition Type III Deafness.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with X-linked incomplete partition type III (IP3) deafness treated with cochlear implants exhibit higher "Most Comfortable Loudness" (MCL) levels of stimulation and more electrode deactivation than patients with normal morphology. We endeavored to analyze the progression of the MCL levels and electrode deactivation over time and assess those factors that could have led to deactivation. Furthermore, we aimed to assess whether speech perception was affected by a progressive loss of neural contact. DESIGN: All 13 patients with the IP3 malformation in our clinical database we

Exosomal ZEB1 Derived from Neural Stem Cells Reduces Inflammation Injury in OGD/R-Treated Microglia via the GPR30-TLR4-NF-κB Axis.

Ischemic stroke (IS) is the most common type of stroke and the second leading cause of death overall. Neural stem cells play protective roles in IS, but the underlying mechanism remains to be determined. Neural stem cells (NSC) were obtained from the fetal brain tissue of C57BL/6J mice. NSC-derived exosomes (NSC-Exos) were identified in the conditioned medium. Internalization of NSC-Exos was analyzed by fluorescence microscopy. In vitro microglia ischemic stroke injury model was induced using oxygen glucose deprivation/re-oxygenation (OGD/R) method. Cell viability and inflammation were analyze

Osteolysis: A Literature Review of Basic Science and Potential Computer-Based Image Processing Detection Methods.

Osteolysis is one of the most prominent reasons of revision surgeries in total joint arthroplasty. This biological phenomenon is induced by wear particles and corrosion products that stimulate inflammatory biological response of surrounding tissues. The eventual responses of osteolysis are the activation of macrophages leading to bone resorption and prosthesis failure. Various factors are involved in the initiation of osteolysis from biological issues, design, material specifications, and model of the prosthesis to the health condition of the patient. Nevertheless, the factors leading to osteo

In Vivo Evaluation of Novel PLA/PCL Polymeric Patch in Rats for Potential Spina Bifida Coverage.

BACKGROUND: Current therapeutic materials for spina bifida repair showed a limited number of options in the market, and none of them have all the requirements as the ideal patch. In fact, sometimes the surgical procedures pose substantial challenges using different patches to fully cover the spina bifida lesion. For this purpose, a tailored patch made of poly (L-lactic acid) and poly (ε-caprolactone) blend was designed and validated in vitro to accomplish all these requirements but was never tested in vivo. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In our present study, the designed patch was analyzed in terms o

Clinical outcomes and management of facial nerve in patients with parotid gland cancer and pretreatment facial weakness.

OBJECTIVES: In parotid gland cancer (PGC), it is not clear whether facial weakness always reflects tumor invasion of the facial nerve (FN) requiring nerve resection. The aims of this study were to evaluate oncological and functional outcomes in patients with PGC and pre-treatment facial weakness, and to analyze local tumor invasion of the FN. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The clinical outcomes of patients (n = 45) with PGC and pretreatment facial weakness were retrospectively analyzed. Patients had undergone 1 of 4 types of treatments: complete tumor resection, FN sacrifice with or without FN recons

Hematopoietic stem cells reduce postischemic inflammation and ameliorate ischemic brain injury.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Systemic injection of hematopoietic stem cells after ischemic cardiac or neural lesions is one approach to promote tissue repair. However, mechanisms of possible protective or reparative effects are poorly understood. In this study we analyzed the effect of lineage-negative bone marrow-derived hematopoietic stem and precursor cells (Lin(-)-HSCs) on ischemic brain injury in mice. METHODS: Lin(-)-HSCs were injected intravenously at 24 hours after onset of a 45-minute transient cerebral ischemia. Effects of Lin(-)-HSCs injection on infarct size, apoptotic cell death, post

Hippocampal-parietal directed connectivity mediates brain network reconfiguration between internal and external attention: An intracranial EEG study.

Attention is a cornerstone of cognitive function, and understanding its neural mechanisms is of great significance for both cognitive science and clinical applications. A critical aspect of this endeavor involves elucidating how the brain's network architecture shifts between internally- and externally-directed states. However, the distinct organizational principles of neural networks in these states, as well as the pivotal brain regions and connections that mediate such transitions, remain largely unclear. To investigate these network dynamics, this study analyzed stereo-electroencephalograph

Alterations in brain function in patients with post-stroke cognitive impairment: a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment is a common dysfunction following stroke, significantly affecting patients' quality of life. Studies suggest that post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) may be related to neural activity in specific brain regions. However, the neural mechanisms remain to be further explored. This study aimed to investigate the alterations in brain function in patients with PSCI. METHODS: This was a case-control study. Thirty patients with PSCI, thirty with non-PSCI (NPSCI), and thirty age- and gender-matched healthy controls (HCs) were selected in a 1:1:1 ratio. Resting-state

The Music of Silence: Part I: Responses to Musical Imagery Encode Melodic Expectations and Acoustics.

Musical imagery is the voluntary internal hearing of music in the mind without the need for physical action or external stimulation. Numerous studies have already revealed brain areas activated during imagery. However, it remains unclear to what extent imagined music responses preserve the detailed temporal dynamics of the acoustic stimulus envelope and, crucially, whether melodic expectations play any role in modulating responses to imagined music, as they prominently do during listening. These modulations are important as they reflect aspects of the human musical experience, such as its acqu

Neural mechanisms of uncertain decision-making in anxious adolescents: an EEG study based on the balloon analogue risk task.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is marked by heightened vulnerability to anxiety which can impair decision-making under uncertainty. The underlying neural oscillatory network-level mechanisms in anxious adolescents require further elucidation. METHODS: We recruited 40 adolescents (20 adolescents with clinically diagnosed anxiety disorders, 20 matched controls). Participants performed a gain/loss version of the Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART) during EEG recording. Behavioral data, time-frequency EEG power in beta (13-30 Hz) and theta (4-7 Hz) bands, and phase-based functional connectivity were analy

Dopaminergic nigrostriatal vulnerability in Parkinson's Disease with diabetes: evidence from severity-matched cohorts.

PURPOSE: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) has been recognized as a potential risk factor and disease-modifier in Parkinson's Disease (PD), being associated with worse motor and cognitive outcomes, and altered susceptibility of neural pathways. This study investigated the impact of DM on nigrostriatal dopaminergic vulnerability independently of disease severity in drug-naïve PD patients. METHODS: This study analyzed two independent cohorts of PD patients (multi-center PPMI n = 174, single-center UniBS n = 95). Patients with and without DM were first compared and then matched for age, sex, and clinical s

Long-Term Variability in Visual Processing versus Perceptual Stability.

Our brain is in constant change due to neural plasticity, but, still, our experience of the world feels relatively stable to us. Focusing on visual processing, we hypothesize that brain responses to stimuli may change over long periods of time, but in a way that is orthogonal to the dimensions that are relevant to stimulus category discrimination. To test this hypothesis, we acquired and analyzed a magnetoencephalography (MEG) dataset containing recordings from one female adult participant, with several scanning days spanning over 6 months. The participant passively attended to visual stimuli

Dynamics of Neural Adjustments During Progressive Transitions to Unweighted and Reloaded Running.

The lower body positive pressure treadmill (LBPPT) enables running at different percentages of body weight. This study investigated how neural adjustments unfold during progressive transitions to unweighted and reloaded running, and assessed the repeatability of their dynamics across two successive exposures. Thirty-eight men completed two runs (RUN1, RUN2) on a LBPPT. Each run comprised three stable phases at 100%, 60%, and 100% body weight (3 × 3 min), separated by progressive unweighting and reloading transitions (UNWtr and RLDtr; 12 ± 2 s). Surface electromyographic (EMG) activity of 11 lo

Transcranial ultrasound stimulation modulates neural activity of paraventricular thalamus and prefrontal cortex in the propofol-anesthetized mice.

Objective.Transcranial ultrasound stimulation (TUS) has been reported to modulate neural activity and accelerate the recovery of consciousness (ROC) in the propofol-anesthetized mice. Both the thalamus and frontal cortex play critical roles in anesthetic-induced transition of consciousness (TOC).Approach.Twenty-one male BALB/c mice were randomly divided into the Sham group (n= 7), the TUS1 group (n= 7) and the TUS2 group (n= 7). The thalamus of mice in the two TUS groups were subjected to TUS before or after anesthesia, respectively. Local field potentials of paraventricular thalamus (PVT) and

Neural progenitor cell-derived exosomes in ischemia/reperfusion injury in cardiomyoblasts.

The physiologic relationship between the brain and heart is emerging as a novel therapeutic target for clinical intervention for acute myocardial infarction. In the adult human brain, vestigial neuronal progenitor stem cells contribute to neuronal repair and recovery following cerebral ischemic injury, an effect modulated by secreted exosomes. Ischemia conditioned neuronal cell derived supernatant and experimental stroke has been shown to be injurious to the heart. However, whether unconditioned neuronal progenitor cell derived-exosomes can instead protect myocardium represents a profound rese

Advancing Cell Therapy to Enhance Passive Avoidance Memory: Integrative Approaches Combining Neural-Like Cells and Rosmarinic Acid Through Behavioral, Molecular, and Histological Analyses.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by progressive neurodegeneration, synaptic dysfunction, and cognitive decline. Regenerative strategies aim to replace lost neurons and modulate the inflammatory milieu to restore neural networks. This study examined the effects of neural-like cells (NLCs) derived from dental pulp mesenchymal stem cells (DPSCs) on a chitosan scaffold using rosmarinic acid (RA) in AD rats. In this study, DPSCs were extracted from teeth, characterized and differentiated, induced an AD model by destroying the Meynert nucleus, conducted passive avoidance tests, analyzed his
