In 3 patients with a stroke limited to the posterior fossa, regional cerebral blood Flows were measured by the 133 Xe inhalation method (the first two cases) or by the SPECT with HMPAO method (the third case). The first patient had a median and paramedian hematoma of the left cerebellar hemisphere and the left dorsolateral portion of the pons. Remote cerebral hypoperfusion, measured 3 months later, was observed in both frontal premotor regions (but more marked in the right hemisphere) and in a circumscribed area of the right temporal region. The second patient had a right-sided ischaemic lesio

Stroke is the second leading cause of death globally and a major contributor to long-term disability. Neural stem cells (NSCs) offer a promising therapeutic strategy for ischemic conditions by modulating neuroinflammation, enhancing neuroplasticity, facilitating tissue remodeling, and promoting neural tissue regeneration. Preclinical evidence strongly indicates that NSCs migrate to damaged brain regions and play a crucial role in repair by differentiating into various functional neural cell types. Recent research has underscored the significance of specific molecular pathways, particularly the

Human cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is the leading non-genetic aetiology of congenital malformation in developed countries, causing significant fetal neurological injury. This study investigated potential CMV pathogenetic mechanisms of fetal neural malformation using in vitro human cerebral organoids. Cerebral organoids were permissive to CMV replication, and infection dysregulated cellular pluripotency and differentiation pathways. Aberrant expression of dual-specificity tyrosine phosphorylation-regulated kinases (DYRK), sonic hedgehog (SHH), pluripotency, neurodegeneration, axon guidance,

Iniencephaly is a rare and mostly lethal type of neural tube defect. The pattern of inheritance of this group of malformations is multifactorial, rendering the identification of the underlying causes. Numerous studies have been conducted to elucidate the genetic basis of human neurulation. Essential signaling pathways of the development of the CNS include the planar cell polarity pathway, which is important for the initiation of neural tube closure, as well as the sonic hedgehog pathway, which regulates the neural plate bending. Genes influencing the different stages of neurulation have been i

Recent findings in experiments on monkeys show that a horizontal saccade is made by a pulse-step of neural activity, part of which rises to medial rectus (MR) motoneurons on the fibers of the medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF). If inhibitory as well as excitatory fibers run in the MLF, then the data show that each MLF must carry both the excitatory and inhibitory activity required for contralateral, horizontal saccades. Therefore, interruption of these fibers removes not only excitation from the ipsilateral MR but inhibition from the contralateral MR. Such a lesion also disturbs the correct

Melanoma cells in the brain may use similar mechanisms for adapting to injury and/or disease (that is, through continued reallocation of energy, matter, and information) as other cell types do to create an environment in which cancer cells can grow and sustain themselves within the confines of the brain. These adaptable mechanisms include the ability to reactivate dormant neural crest-derived migration and communication pathways. Unlike some other types of cancers that invade neural tissue as a simple invasion, melanomas are capable of achieving limited molecular, metabolic, and electrical sim

This work examines the connectivity of the olfactory bulb in the gynmotiform fish Apteronotus leptorhynchus. Wheat germ agglutinin conjugated horseradish peroxidase was iontophoresed in different areas and depths of the bulb in order to define its efferent and afferent connections. The olfactory bulb projects bilaterally via the medial (medial and centromedial fascicles) and lateral olfactory (lateral and centrolateral fascicles) tracts. The nervus terminalis courses through the ventromedial aspect of the bulb to terminate in parts of the medial subpallium and hypothalamus. Its telencephalic c

BACKGROUND: Left atrial (LA) ganglionated plexi (GP) are part of the intrinsic cardiac autonomic nervous system and implicated in the pathogenesis of atrial fibrillation. High frequency stimulation is used to identify GP sites in humans. The effect of ablation on neural pathways connecting GPs in humans is unknown.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Thirty patients undergoing LA ablation with autonomic modification were recruited. In patients with persistent atrial fibrillation, endocardial continuous high frequency stimulation identified GP sites producing AV block. After right lower GP ablation (N=5), 2 …

The bottom-up processing of visual information is strongly influenced by top-down signals, at least part of which is thought to be conveyed from the frontal cortex through the frontal eye field (FEF) and the lateral intraparietal area (LIP). Here we investigated the architecture of multisynaptic pathways from the frontal cortex to the middle temporal area (MT) of the dorsal visual stream and visual area 4 (V4) of the ventral visual stream in macaques. In the first series of experiments, the retrograde trans-synaptic tracer, rabies virus, was injected into MT or V4. Three days after rabies inje

Xenopus laevis is an aquatic anuran with a complex vocal repertoire. Unlike terrestrial frogs, vocalizations are independent of respiration, and a single muscle group--the laryngeal dilators--produces underwater calls. We sought to identify the premotor neural network that underlies vocal behaviors. Vocal patterns generated by premotor networks control laryngeal motor neurons in cranial nucleus (n.) IX-X. Glottal motor neurons, active during respiration, are also present in n.IX-X. We used horseradish peroxidase (HRP), Lucifer yellow, and fluorescently conjugated dextrans to characterize the o

In macaque monkeys, the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) is concerned with the integration of multimodal information for constructing a spatial representation of the external world (in relation to the macaque's body or parts thereof), and planning and executing object-centred movements. The areas within the intraparietal sulcus (IPS), in particular, serve as interfaces between the perceptive and motor systems for controlling arm and eye movements in space. We review here the latest evidence for the existence of the IPS areas AIP (anterior intraparietal area), VIP (ventral intraparietal area), M

In the forebrain of domestic chicks, a network of distinct regions is crucially involved in auditory and visual filial imprinting. Among these areas, a distinct part of the dorsocaudal neostriatal complex (dNC complex), termed neostriatum dorsocaudale (Ndc), was recently discovered by its enhanced metabolic activity during the presentation of auditory and visual imprinting stimuli. Since there is evidence that the dNC complex consists of several distinct functional subareas, we investigated the neural connections of different parts of the dNC complex by retro- and anterograde pathway tracing.

Water deprivation and hypernatremia are major challenges for water and sodium homeostasis. Cellular integrity requires maintenance of water and sodium concentration within narrow limits. This regulation is obtained through engagement of multiple mechanisms and neural pathways that regulate the volume and composition of the extracellular fluid. The purpose of this short review is to summarize the literature on central neural mechanisms underlying cardiovascular, hormonal and autonomic responses to circulating volume changes, and some of the findings obtained in the last 12 years by our laborato…

1. Despite the emerging framework that central neural pathways controlling the activity of the sympathetic nervous system are capable of producing highly selective responses, the specific neural pathways governing different sympathetic outflows are poorly understood. 2. Anatomical studies suggest that five brain areas, namely the rostral ventrolateral medulla, the rostral ventromedial medulla, the caudal raphe nuclei, the region containing the A5 noradrenergic neurons and the paraventricular hypothalamic nucleus, provide dominant supraspinal innervation of sympathetic preganglionic neurons. 3.…

Neuro-immune interactions are essential for our body's defense and homeostasis. Anatomical and physiological analyses have shown that the nervous system comprises multiple pathways that regulate the dynamics and functions of immune cells, which are mainly mediated by the autonomic nervous system and adrenal signals. These are disturbed when the neurons and circuits are damaged by diseases of the central nervous system (CNS). Injuries caused by stroke or trauma often cause immune dysfunction by abrogation of the immune-regulating neural pathways, which leads to an increased risk of infections. …

Lentiviral vectors are efficient genetic tools for neuroscience research. Among several kinds of lentiviral vectors, human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1)-based lentiviral vectors have shown promise. Envelope glycoproteins studding the surface of viral particles play a crucial role in viral infection of host cells. Conventional lentiviral vectors are pseudotyped with vesicular stomatitis virus glycoprotein (VSV-G), and efficiently transfer the gene to different neurons. Lentiviral tropism can be manipulated by genetically engineering glycoproteins. Analyses of specific neural pathways ar…

In humans, it is well established that practicing simple, repetitive movements with the distal upper limb induces short-term plasticity in the neural pathways that control training. It is unknown how the neural response to similar training at more proximal joints differs. The purpose of this study was to quantify how ballistic training at proximal and distal upper limb joints influences measures of corticomotor plasticity. To accomplish this goal, we had subjects repetitively practice simple movements for 30 min using the index finger, wrist, or elbow. Before and after training, transcranial m…

In this paper we give an introduction to the area, followed by brief reviews of the neural response to sound and vibration, and then the velocity storage integrator, before putting forward our hypothesis about the neural input to the velocity storage integrator. Finally we discuss some of the implications of our hypothesis. There are two pathways conveying neural information from the vestibular periphery (the semicircular canals and the otoliths) to central neural mechanisms-a direct and an indirect pathway. Within the indirect pathway there is a unique neural mechanism called the velocity sto

The recovery of voluntary movement after complete spinal cord injury (SCI) remains a formidable clinical challenge, as it necessitates both the reconstruction of disrupted spinal cord neural pathways and the restoration of the excitatory/inhibitory balance in sensorimotor neural circuits. To tackle this dual challenge, we transplanted a biomimetic spinal cord tissueoid (SCToid) into the injury cavity to structurally reestablish neural pathways, while concurrently applying tail nerve electrical stimulation (TNES) to functionally reactivate silent sensorimotor neural circuits. The results showed…

The study by Wang and colleagues proposes that three connected brain areas link facial nerve injury to pain and depression-like behavior in mice. The experiments are ambitious and potentially important. However, the nerve-injury model differs from the defining pattern of human trigeminal neuralgia, several behavioral and drug controls leave alternative explanations open, and measurements from many cells were not clearly separated from the animals that supplied them. Clarifying these issues, and distinguishing results from whole tissue from results specific to neurons, would make the causal and
