Retinal OCT biomarkers and their association with cognitive function-clinical and AI approaches.

Retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) biomarkers have the potential to serve as early, noninvasive, and cost-effective markers for identifying individuals at risk for cognitive impairments and neurodegenerative diseases. They may also aid in monitoring disease progression and evaluating the effectiveness of interventions targeting cognitive decline. The association between retinal OCT biomarkers and cognitive performance has been demonstrated in several studies, and their importance in cognitive assessment is increasingly being recognized. Machine learning (ML) is a branch of artificial i

Functional to structural plasticity in unilateral sudden sensorineural hearing loss: neuroimaging evidence.

A cortical plasticity after long-duration single side deafness (SSD) is advocated with neuroimaging evidence while little is known about the short-duration SSDs. In this case-cohort study, we recruited unilateral sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) patients and age-, gender-matched health controls (HC), followed by comprehensive neuroimaging analyses. The primary outcome measures were temporal alterations of varied dynamic functional network connectivity (dFNC) states, neurovascular coupling (NVC) and brain region volume at different stages of SSNHL. The secondary outcome measures were p

Adrenal Stress Hormone Regulation of Hepatic Homeostatic Function After an Acute Ozone Exposure in Wistar-Kyoto Male Rats.

Ozone-induced lung injury, inflammation, and pulmonary/hypothalamus gene expression changes are diminished in adrenalectomized (AD) rats. Acute ozone exposure induces metabolic alterations concomitant with increases in epinephrine and corticosterone. We hypothesized that adrenal hormones are responsible for observed hepatic ozone effects, and in AD rats, these changes would be diminished. In total, 5-7 days after sham (SH) or AD surgeries, male Wistar-Kyoto rats were exposed to air or 0.8-ppm ozone for 4 h. Serum samples were analyzed for metabolites and liver for transcriptional changes immed

Time-course recovery of cerebral blood velocity metrics post aerobic exercise: a systematic review.

Currently, the standard approach for restricting exercise prior to cerebrovascular data collection varies widely between 6 and 24 h. This universally employed practice is a conservative approach to safeguard physiological alterations that could potentially confound one's study design. Therefore, the purpose of this systematic review was to amalgamate the existing literature examining the extent and duration of postexercise alterations in cerebrovascular function, measured via transcranial Doppler ultrasound. Furthermore, an exploratory aim was to scrutinize and discuss common biases/limitation

CD73 controls ocular adenosine levels and protects retina from light-induced phototoxicity.

ATP and adenosine have emerged as important signaling molecules involved in vascular remodeling, retinal functioning and neurovascular coupling in the mammalian eye. However, little is known about the regulatory mechanisms of purinergic signaling in the eye. Here, we used three-dimensional multiplexed imaging, in situ enzyme histochemistry, flow cytometric analysis, and single cell transcriptomics to characterize the whole pattern of purine metabolism in mouse and human eyes. This study identified ecto-nucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolase-1 (NTPDase1/CD39), NTPDase2, and ecto-5'-nucleoti

Hemodynamic latency is associated with reduced intelligence across the lifespan: an fMRI DCM study of aging, cerebrovascular integrity, and cognitive ability.

Changes in neurovascular coupling are associated with both Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia in later life, but this may be confounded by cerebrovascular risk. We hypothesized that hemodynamic latency would be associated with reduced cognitive functioning across the lifespan, holding constant demographic and cerebrovascular risk. In 387 adults aged 18-85 (mean = 48.82), dynamic causal modeling was used to estimate the hemodynamic response function in the left and right V1 and V3-ventral regions of the visual cortex in response to a simple checkerboard block design stimulus with minimal

The carotid body role in oxygen sensing: Anatomy, neurovascular organization, and structural bases of chemotransduction.

BACKGROUND: The carotid body is a small, highly vascularized organ located at the bifurcation of the common carotid artery and serves as the primary peripheral detector of arterial oxygen tension in mammals. Although its physiological role in ventilatory and autonomic reflexes has been extensively investigated, these functions are fundamentally dependent on its specialized anatomical organization. Objective: This review provides a comprehensive overview of the anatomical organization of the carotid body, highlighting how its gross morphology, microvascular architecture, cellular composition, a

Functional Ultrasound Imaging in Simulated Brain State Analysis.

Functional ultrasound imaging (fUSI) has emerged as a promising non-invasive neuroimaging modality that leverages neurovascular coupling to capture hemodynamic changes associated with neuronal activity. This study investigates the feasibility of fUSI for brain state classification in both healthy and pathological conditions using computational simulations based on the Wilson-Cowan neural mass model. Simulated electrophysiological signals were transformed into fUSI-like traces via convolution with an experimentally derived hemodynamic response function (HRF). Pathological conditions representin

Pericytes in Brain Homeostasis: Developmental Roles and Adult Functions.

Pericytes (PCs) are multifunctional mural cells embedded in the basement membrane of microvessels and play essential roles in the development and maintenance of the central nervous system. This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of the current knowledge on PC biology, tracing their trajectory from embryonic origins to specialized functions in the adult brain. During early brain development, PCs are recruited via platelet-derived growth factor B (PDGF-BB)/platelet-derived growth factor receptor beta (PDGFRβ) signaling and contribute to the formation of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), cort

Posture Dependence of Cerebral Spinal Fluid and Blood Flow by Phase Contrast Magnetic Resonance Imaging at 3 T.

Understanding how body posture influence the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood flow is crucial for developing effective treatment strategies for neurological diseases. 2D phase contrast (PC) MRI is commonly used to investigate flow dynamics in the cerebral aqueduct (CAq) and large blood vessels. However, the measured results are susceptible to head motion and variation in slice locations between postures. We developed a PC-MRI sequence incorporating prospective motion correction (PMC) and consistent slice prescription. Using this sequence, we investigated blood and CSF dynamics in young heal

Insights to Ang/Tie signaling pathway: another rosy dawn for treating retinal and choroidal vascular diseases.

Retinal neurovascular unit (NVU) is a multi-cellular structure that consists of the functional coupling between neural tissue and vascular system. Disrupted NVU will result in the occurrence of retinal and choroidal vascular diseases, which are characterized by the development of neovascularization, increased vascular permeability, and inflammation. This pathological entity mainly includes neovascular age-related macular degeneration (neovascular-AMD), diabetic retinopathy (DR) retinal vein occlusion (RVO), and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Emerging evidences suggest that the angopoietin/t

Astrocytes mediate cerebral blood flow and neuronal response to cocaine in prefrontal cortex.

Cocaine affects both cerebral blood vessels and neuronal activity in brain. Cocaine can also disrupt astrocytes, which are involved in neurovascular coupling process that modulates cerebral hemodynamics in response to neuronal activity. However, separating neuronal and astrocytic effects from cocaine's direct vasoactive effects is challenging, partially due to limitations of neuroimaging techniques to differentiate vascular from neuronal and glial effects at high temporal and spatial resolutions. Here, we used a newly-developed multi-channel fluorescence and optical coherence Doppler microscop

Cellular-Level Analysis of Retinal Blood Vessel Walls Based on Phase Gradient Images.

Diseases such as diabetes affect the retinal vasculature and the health of the neural retina, leading to vision problems. We describe here an imaging method and analysis procedure that enables characterization of the retinal vessel walls with cellular-level resolution, potentially providing markers for eye diseases. Adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscopy is used with a modified detection scheme to include four simultaneous offset aperture channels. The magnitude of the phase gradient derived from these offset images is used to visualize the structural characteristics of the vessels. The

Invariant structural and functional brain regions associated with tinnitus: A meta-analysis.

Tinnitus is a common, functionally disabling condition of often unknown etiology. Neuroimaging research to better understand tinnitus is emerging but remains limited in scope. Voxel-based physiology (VBP) studies detect tinnitus-associated pathophysiology by group-wise contrast (tinnitus vs controls) of resting-state indices of hemodynamics, metabolism, and neurovascular coupling. Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) detects tinnitus-associated neurodegeneration by group-wise contrast of structural MRI. Both VBP and VBM studies routinely report results as atlas-referenced coordinates, suitable for co

The effect of risperidone on reward-related brain activity is robust to drug-induced vascular changes.

Dopamine (DA) mediated brain activity is intimately linked to reward-driven cerebral responses, while aberrant reward processing has been implicated in several psychiatric disorders. fMRI has been a valuable tool in understanding the mechanism by which DA modulators alter reward-driven responses and how they may exert their therapeutic effect. However, the potential effects of a pharmacological compound on aspects of neurovascular coupling may cloud the interpretability of the BOLD contrast. Here, we assess the effects of risperidone on reward driven BOLD signals produced by reward anticipatio

Neuroimaging characteristics of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS): a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Since the 1990s, neuroimaging has been utilised to study Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), a debilitating illness with unknown aetiology. While brain abnormalities in ME/CFS have been identified, relatively little is known regarding which specific abnormalities are consistently observed across research groups and to what extent the observed abnormalities are reproducible. METHOD: To identify consistent and inconsistent neuroimaging observations in ME/CFS, this retrospective and systematic review searched for studies in which neuroimaging was used to inve

Cerebrovascular function is preserved during mild hyperthermia in cervical spinal cord injury.

STUDY DESIGN: Experimental study. OBJECTIVES: Compromised cerebrovascular function likely contributes to elevated neurological risk in spinal cord injury (SCI). Passive heating offers many cardiovascular and neurological health benefits; therefore, we aimed to determine the effects of an acute bout of heating on cerebrovascular function in chronic SCI. METHODS: Persons with cervical SCI (n = 15) and uninjured controls (CON; n = 15) completed 60 min of lower limb hot water immersion (40 °C). Correlational Analysis of Qiming Granule with the CMKLR1-Centered Network and Systemic Inflammation via the Gut-Retina Axis in Diabetic Retinopathy.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a neurovascular complication driven by chronic hyperglycemia and systemic inflammation, with emerging evidence highlighting the gut-retina axis as a critical but underexploited therapeutic target. This study investigates whether Qiming Granule (QMG) exerts its protective efficacy against DR by modulating the gut-retina axis. C57BL/6 mice were randomized into experimental groups and subjected to distinct interventions. Retinal histopathological changes were assessed by Hematoxylin-Eosin (HE) staining. Serum levels of inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α) were
