Nevus sebaceus (NS)(organoid nevus) is a benign follicular neoplasm that commonly occurs on the scalp, face, or neck. With time, it may give rise to benign or malignant tumors such as trichoblastoma, syringocystadenoma papilliferum, and basal cell carcinoma (BCC). Rarely, other types of neoplasms may develop. We present a 76-year-old woman with several trichoblastomas as well as a primary cutaneous apocrine carcinoma arising within a preexisting NS that was treated with frozen section excision.

A 4-year-old female with a unilateral circumscribed choroidal hemangioma and secondary total exudative retinal detachment. A nasal skin scar-like lesion incised to confirm a histopathologic diagnosis of linear nevus sebaceous. Further imaging disclosed asymmetry of the lateral ventricle frontal horns, suggestive of the diagnosis of linear nevus sebaceous syndrome. The choroidal hemangioma was treated with I-125 episcleral brachytherapy (apical dose of 45 Gy). At 6 months post-radiation, the tumor showed regression with total resolution of exudative retinal detachment.

Inflammatory linear verrucous epidermal nevus and linear psoriasis are different entities with clinical and histopathologic similarities. Isolated reports of inflammatory linear verrucous epidermal nevus with concomitant psoriasis or a positive family history of psoriasis have been described, and the possibility that inflammatory linear verrucous epidermal nevus may be a mosaic form of cutaneous psoriasis has been postulated. We report a 17-year-old boy with a congenital, linear, erythematous, keratotic plaque on the dorsum of the fifth finger of the left hand with ipsilateral nail dystrophy. …

Blue nevi are melanocytic tumors originating in the cutaneous dermis. Malignant tumors may arise in association with or resembling blue nevi, so called 'blue nevus-like melanoma', which can metastasize and result in patient death. Identifying which tumors will behave in a clinically aggressive manner can be challenging. Identifying genetic alterations in such tumors may assist in their diagnosis and prognostication. Blue nevi are known to be genetically related to uveal melanomas (eg, both harboring GNAQ and GNA11 mutations). In this study, we analyzed a large cohort (n=301) of various morphol…

We describe a case of a giant conjunctival nevus presented in a 12-year-old girl with suspicious clinicomorphological appearance. The lesion was noticed by the parents at the age of 3 years as a "fleshy spot" on the bulbar conjunctiva. The lesion remained unchanged until approx. 6 months before recent admission. On slit-lamp examination, a large conjunctival lesion with variegate pigmentation and indistinct margins was detected on the superonasal part of the bulbar conjunctiva of the left eye. Intralesional cysts and vessels were detected with AS-OCT examination. Wide excision and cryotherapy …

The predisposition to epithelial neoplasms in nevus sebaceous is well established; most tumors occur in adults and are benign. Hidradenoma is a relatively rare benign tumor of sweat gland origin that can rarely arise within a nevus sebaceous. We present an interesting case of a hidradenoma and sebaceoma arising within a nevus sebaceous and present a literature review of the 2 conditions. Even though hidradenoma is a benign tumor, we would advocate complete excision given the potential for malignant transformation.

Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome (BRBNS) involves cutaneous vascular malformation characterized by multiple venous malformations. This commonly affects the skin and gastrointestinal tract. BRBNS is associated with anemia and occasionally involves orthopedic manifestations. A 6-year-old boy was referred to hospital for evaluation of anemia. He presented with a rubber-like soft-tissue mass in the left knee and the right side of the neck, recurrent pain, and fixed flexion contracture of the knee. Blood examination indicated consumption coagulopathy and anemia caused by not only iron-deficiency ane…

Congenital melanocytic nevus (CMN) is a neural crest-derived hamartoma, which appear at or soon after birth. CMN has a dynamic course and may show variable changes over time, including spontaneous involution. Spontaneous involution of CMN is a rare phenomenon and is often reported in association with halo phenomenon or vitiligo. The mechanism of halo phenomenon is yet to be investigated but is suggested to be a destruction of melanocytes by immune responses of cytotoxic T cells or IgM autoantibodies. Here, the authors report an interesting case of spontaneously regressed medium-sized CMN with …

Blue nevi are uncommon, asymptomatic lesions of the uterine cervix. These lesions are not often detected clinically or on colposcopy. Careful histopathological examination is required. The nevus cells are said to originate from the immature melanoblasts of the neural crest. These lesions need to be differentiated from malignant melanoma and melanosis of the cervix. We present here a case report of incidentally detected cervical blue nevus in a 52 year old lady.

PURPOSE: To describe 3 cases of primary orbital melanoma associated with either known or subsequently discovered cellular blue nevus.
METHODS: The clinical records and surgical specimens of 3 patients who underwent orbital exenteration for primary orbital melanoma and who had a cellular blue nevus diagnosed before or after detection of the melanoma were retrospectively reviewed.
RESULTS: All 3 patients presented with signs and symptoms of an orbital mass. Subsequent biopsy revealed invasive melanoma. One patient had a known history of congenital cellular blue nevus of the eyelid from which t…

To the authors' knowledge, this case report is the first to describe rod-cone dystrophy in a patient with linear sebaceous nevus syndrome. Because linear sebaceous nevus syndrome is a multisystem disorder, it is important that treatment include an interdisciplinary approach. The electroretinographic findings are characteristic and can be subtle. These findings should be differentiated from the findings in high myopia.

BACKGROUND: PENS is a rare neuro-cutaneous syndrome that has been recently described. It involves one or more congenital epidermal hamartomas of the papular epidermal nevus with "skyline" basal cell layer type (PENS) as well as non-specific neurological anomalies. Herein, we describe an original case in which the epidermal hamartomas are associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 6-year-old boy with a previous history of severe ASD was referred to us for asymptomatic pigmented congenital plaques on the forehead and occipital region. Clinical examination revealed a…

A child referred for management of retinoblastoma who alternatively had a calcified scleral choristoma as part of previously undiagnosed organoid nevus syndrome is described. A 31-month-old male infant with scalp alopecia was referred for retinoblastoma management after a calcified mass in his left eye was found. Ophthalmic examination revealed the mass was of choroidal or scleral origin, underlying the retina. The amelanotic circumpapillary mass extended superonasally in a geographic configuration and measured 14×12 mm. There was no subretinal fluid, hemorrhage, feeder vessels, or tumor seedi…

Clear cell sarcoma (CCS) typically presents as a tumor in the deep soft tissue of extremities, but when centered in the dermis it may be confused with a melanocytic nevus, primary nodular or metastatic melanoma. Compound variants of CCS, i.e. tumor cells present in both the epidermis and underlying soft tissue have not yet been described. Herein we report such a case, which initially presented as a nodule on the left wrist of a young woman at 19 years of age. The lesion was then interpreted as 'Spitz nevus, compound type'. Twelve years later the patient noticed an enlarged lymph node in the ri…

We describe a 29-year-old woman with congenital melanonychia striata and compound nevus of the right first digit. There was extension of the hyperpigmentation onto the proximal nail fold, even beyond the borders established by the band of melanonychia striata. A dermal plaque with irregular borders and variegated pigmentation was also present over the distal digit extending from the pigmented region of the hyponychium. A limited number of biopsy proven congenital subungual melanocytic nevi have been reported in the literature. Interestingly, we found that the majority of these cases present wi…

Blue nevus is a type of dermal melanocytosis and has a variety of clinicopathological characteristics. A few particular variants are generally accepted as discrete clinicopathological entities. Plaque-type blue nevus (PTBN) is one of the variants of blue nevus. PTBN presents at birth or arises in early childhood, and shows a combination of features found in common blue nevus and cellular blue nevus. In this report, we describe a malignant melanoma arising in association with a PTBN in a 65-year-old male. The tumor appeared as a well circumscribed but partially infiltrative upper-abdominal mass…
