[Assessment of foetal nutrition status at birth using the CANS score].

INTRODUCTION: Foetal malnutrition (FM) is the result of a loss or failure of intrauterine acquisition of the correct amount of fat and muscle mass, with short and long term implications. As the diagnosis of FM is essentially clinical, the aim of this study is to detect the incidence of FM using the Clinical Assessment of Nutritional Status (CANS) score, and compare the results with the classic anthropometric parameters. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective population of term infants was studied between 2003 and 2014 (n=14,477). They were classified into adequate weight (AGA), small weight (SGA…

Enteral nutrition in adult Crohn's disease: present status and perspectives.

Enteral nutrition has long been a therapeutic alternative often used in adult Crohn's disease patients to obtain remission or clinical response, especially in those not responding to conventional therapy such as corticosteroids. However, the increasing use of immunosuppressors (6-mercaptopurine and azathioprine, methotrexate, etc.), and the advent of biotherapies (especially anti-tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) antibodies), decreased its use in adult Crohn's disease. Nevertheless, enteral nutrition remains of interest in patients presenting concomitant malnutrition (in particular in no

The impact of dracunculiasis on the nutritional status of children in South Kordofan, Sudan.

This paper assesses the indirect impact of dracunculiasis on the nutritional status of children under 6 years of age in South Kordofan, Sudan. Weight-for-height anthropometric measurement was used as a measure of the nutritional status of 774 children in 428 households. The indirect impact was investigated by comparing the nutritional status in 1988 of children in 'affected' households, where more than half the adult members had suffered from dracunculiasis in 1987, with children in other households. It was anticipated that when the otherwise able adult members of a households had dracunculias…

Trace element nutrition status and dietary intake of children with phenylketonuria.

The trace element status (copper, iron, zinc, manganese, chromium, and selenium) of 20 dietetically treated phenylketonuric (PKU) children was assessed. Significantly higher intakes of copper (p = 0.002) and iron (p = 0.005) were noted in PKU children compared with their siblings. No significant differences were found for zinc, manganese, or chromium. Intake of selenium was significantly lower (p = 0.0001) in PKU children (8.4 +/- 3.9 micrograms/d) than in siblings (41.6 +/- 9.4 micrograms/d). Plasma and urine selenium and erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase activity (GSHpx) were significantly

Pharmacokinetics of streptomycin in Ethiopian children with tuberculosis and of different nutritional status.

Fifty-six malnourished Ethiopian children with tuberculosis classified in four nutritional groups (normal, underweight, marasmus and kwashiorkor), were given streptomycin 20 or 30 mg.kg-1 i.m. The plasma concentration-time data revealed an increased apparent volume of distribution in children with kwashiorkor compared to normals. The total plasma clearance was low and did not differ between the nutritional groups. Thus, the half-life was prolonged only in kwashiorkor. The results could be explained by decreased protein binding in plasma and decreased renal clearance by glomerular filtration.

[Essential nutrition and health status indices of schoolchildren of various heights].

The nutrition pattern and disease incidence were studied in 9634 schoolchildren with varying body lengths. A direct correlation was established between the body length and energy value of nutrition, the content of basic food, macroelements and trace elements, vitamins A and B. Tall schoolchildren were shown to have a greater incidence of obesity, chronic tonsilitis, rheumatic fever, enuresis, abnormal posture and scoliosis. The biogeochemical provinces with endemic fluorosis and goiter were disclosed to have the increased number of children below medium height and of low height, which is accou

[Current and future status of human nutrition in the Central American isthmus].

Of the four major nutritional problems in the Central American Isthmus, calorie and protein deficiency, endemic goiter, nutritional anemias, and vitamin A deficiency, the most devastating is the first, calorie and protein malnutrition. Our present stage of advancement requires that the nutritional problem be solved through intensive and continued governmental action that would guarantee the people of this area an adequate diet without deteriorating the environment and without depleting natural resources. This would imply a reorientation of the scientific and technological research and a new ag

Effect of Nutritional Intervention Programs on Nutritional Status and Readmission Rate in Malnourished Older Adults with Pneumonia: A Randomized Control Trial.

Pneumonia leads to changes in body composition and weakness due to the malnourished condition. In addition, patient family caregivers always have a lack of nutritional information, and they do not know how to manage patients' nutritional intake during hospitalization and after discharge. Most intervention studies aim to provide nutritional support for older patients. However, whether long-term nutritional intervention by dietitians and caregivers from patients' families exert clinical effects-particularly in malnourished pneumonia-on nutritional status and readmission rate at each intervention…
