Maxillofacial hemangiomas in young infants can be effectively detected and treated at prophylactic health centers before the tumor progressively grows, this helping do without hospital treatment. Individual methods of treatment and the most rational strategy with due consideration for the tumor shape, size and site can be chosen and the group of patients with spontaneous regression singled out and followed up.

In a follow-up study of 22 ears made after a mean interval of 68 months, spontaneous oto-acoustic emissions (SOAEs) showed marked changes. At follow-up visits, fewer SOAEs were recorded than at the first examination. As the set-up employed at follow-ups was much more sensitive, this observation gains even more weight, because--given identical cochlear structures--a greater number of SOAEs ought to have been recorded. There is the need for more information on the persistence of the immune response to enterovirus 70 (EV70) infection. In August 1984, an outbreak of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis occurred at a nursing home in Sapporo, Japan. During the subsequent 7 years, we have monitored the neutralization antibody of EV70 in 13 patients with acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis and 15 persons with subclinical EV70 infection among the 108 persons in the nursing home. The purpose of this study is to verify the treatment results of rotated teeth by using surgical immediate torsion method. Seven upper central incisors in four monkeys were chosen in our experiment. The surgical treatment was accomplished by rotating the teeth in about 45 degree. The animals were sacrificed at 2, 3, 4 and 12 weeks after operation. The results showed that two of seven dental pulps were necrosis, three were injured and two were normal. There were 15 patients under 15 years of age with cases of acute rheumatic fever diagnosed by revised Jones criteria admitted to pediatric department, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital of Kaohsiung from Jan. 1986 through Dec. 1989. Chloride ions are shown to be actively transported by the ciliary epithelium. The distribution of these ions around the ciliary epithelium was studied by electron microscopy: chloride ions were deposited as silver chloride (AgCl) in the tissue. Albino rabbits, bullfrogs and chick embryos just before hatching were used. In all the animals examined, the concentration of chloride ions was lower in the nonpigmented and pigmented epithelial cells of the ciliary epithelium than in the extracellular space. The chloride ions appeared to accumulate between the nonpigmented epithelial cells.

A unique case of Lipodystrophia centrifugalis sacralis infantilis in a caucasian is reported. This case fulfils all the clinical requirements of the centrifugalis lipodystrophy described in Oriental children by Imamura et al. (1) and usually localized on the abdomen. The 15-year follow-up of this case clearly demonstrates the tendency toward spontaneous remission of the disease after puberty.

An experiment was carried out in white mice by intra-abdominal injection of protoscolices. A chemoprophylaxis of the secondary abdominal echinococcosis was practised by means of Mebendazole (Vermox) in a dosage of 50 mg/kg body weight daily for 90 days. The chemoprophylaxis started on the twentieth day after the infection. Three animal groups were divided: group 1--peroral application of the drug, group 2--injection of the drug, group 3--control group. The clinico-pathological findings in a 61-year-old man, who suffered from branchial and skeletal myoclonus, appearing six months after a brainstem infarction are reported. Of all the drugs which are usually thought to be effective in the treatment of myoclonus, only valproic acid brought some relief. The necropsy revealed bilateral hypertrophy of the olives, together with bilateral pontine tegmental and rubral infarctions, without involvement of the olivary pathway.

A choledochal cyst is an uncommon congenital abnormality and may present with a wide range of clinical symptoms. I here report a new finding from the use of computed tomography, namely layering of intravenous contrast agent within the cyst. This direct sign gives a definitive diagnosis when clinical or other imaging features may not clearly establish the diagnosis.
