Occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens among health care workers in Botswana: Reporting and utilization of postexposure prophylaxis.

BACKGROUND: This study assessed reporting behavior and satisfaction with postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) systems among health care workers (HCWs) at risk for occupational bloodborne pathogen exposure (BPE) in 3 public hospitals in Botswana. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey among HCWs provided information on perceptions, attitudes, and experiences with occupational exposures, reporting, and postexposure care. HCWs potentially in contact with blood or body fluids were surveyed using audio computer-assisted self-interview. RESULTS: Between August 2012 and April 2013, 1,624 HCWs completed the su

Practice of universal precautions and risk of occupational blood-borne viral infection among Congolese health care workers.

The extent of occupational injuries among health care workers in central Africa, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is not documented. We sought to determine the incidence of percutaneous injury and exposure to blood and other body fluids in Congolese urban and rural hospitals in the previous year. Our data show high rates of percutaneous injury and exposure to blood and other body fluids, reflecting poor safety conditions for most Congolese health care workers.

Self-reported occupational health hazards and measured exposures to airborne impurities and noise in shoe repair work.

The authors identified occupational risk factors of shoe repairers and measured their exposures to organic solvents, dust, chromium, degradation products of synthetic shoe materials, and noise. Exposures were measured in 11 shops selected from the workplaces of 82 repairers who responded to a questionnaire about their work environments. The questions dealt with, e.g., chemicals used, work related diseases, perceived hazards in the environment, ventilation, and use of personal protective equipment. Solvent vapor concentration averaged 1.95 (range 0.01-13.2) times the occupational limit (OL) of

Promoting and inhibiting factors for the use of validated dietary assessment questionnaires in health check-up counseling: from occupational health nurses and dietitians' perspective.

A validated questionnaire is not typically used for dietary assessment in health check-up counseling provided by occupational health nurses in Japan. We conducted a qualitative study to investigate the barriers and promoting factors affecting the use of validated questionnaires. Ten occupational health nurses and three registered dietitians, working at a health insurance society, were recruited for this study using an open-ended, free description questionnaire. Inhibiting factors, such as "Feeling of satisfaction with the current method," "Recognition of importance," and "Sense of burden from …

Mental-Health-Related Temporary Work Disability Among Informal Caregivers During the COVID-19 Lockdown in Spain (March-June 2020): A Nationwide Occupational Health Study.

Background/Objectives: During the first COVID-19 lockdown, the sudden disruption of formal care services substantially increased reliance on informal caregiving. Emerging evidence suggests that increased caregiving demands may have contributed to a higher burden of mental-health-related temporary work disability; however, population-based data from occupational health systems remain limited. This study aimed to quantify and characterise, descriptively, the sociodemographic, clinical, and territorial characteristics of mental-health-related temporary work disability among workers with informal …

[Health criteria and scope of workers' periodic health check-ups for selected types of work and exposure factors - Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine guidelines].

Workers' medical prophylactic examinations referred to in the Labor Code are one of the tasks of the occupational medicine services. They are regulated by law which has been in force for more than 20 years in unchanged form. During this period, new harmful, burdensome or dangerous to health factors appeared in the workplaces, for which no preventive health check-up standard was defined. In the meantime, the health criteria for drivers and persons applying for driving licenses have also been significantly liberalized. The above changes, the authors' own experience, comments and problems reporte

Exposures and health effects at sea: report on the NIVA course: maritime occupational medicine, exposures and health effects at Sea Elsinore, Denmark, May 2014.

The presentations and discussions summarised provide an overview on the current state of knowledge on a wide range of occupational health risks to which seafarers are exposed. The definition of an occupational risk for a seafarer poses problems as their ship provides both their working and their living environment and, because of its mobility, can expose them to diverse climatic and infectious risks. Knowledge about levels of exposure to potential health risks in seafarers is limited when compared to those working ashore while, because of a pattern of working that is often temporary and insecu…

Health conditions among male workers in mining and other industries reliant on manual labor occupations: National Health Interview Survey, 2007-2018.

INTRODUCTION: Mining is an industry with diverse, demanding occupational exposures. Understanding the prevalence of chronic health conditions in working miners is an area of active research. Of particular interest is how the health of miners compares to that of workers in other industry sectors with a high proportion of manual labor occupations. By comparing similar industries, we can learn what health conditions may be associated with manual labor and with individual industries. This study analyzes the prevalence of health conditions in miners compared to workers employed in other manual-labo

Compliance with immunization and a biological risk assessment of health care workers as part of an occupational health surveillance program: The experience of a university hospital in southern Italy.

BACKGROUND: The active immunization of health care workers (HCWs) is a primary measure to prevent nosocomial infection; despite this, vaccine coverage among HCWs in most countries is low. To increase vaccine coverage in the health care setting, the hygiene and occupational medicine departments of Bari Policlinico General University-Hospital implemented a vaccination procedure. This operative procedure requires that during the occupational medical examination, all employees are evaluated for immunity/susceptibility to vaccine-preventable diseases, with vaccination offered to those determined to

Radiographic features of importance in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health-administered Coal Workers' Health Surveillance Program: characterising the use of the 'other symbols'.

OBJECTIVE: The National Institute for Occupation Safety and Health-administered Coal Workers' Health Surveillance Program (CWHSP) provides radiographic pneumoconiosis screening for US coal miners. Radiographs are classified by readers according to International Labour Office criteria. In addition to pneumoconiotic parenchymal and pleural lung abnormalities, readers document radiographic features of importance (other symbols). Other symbols are not meant to imply a diagnosis or interpretation but are relevant as they provide information beyond a pneumoconiosis classification for features relate

Development of criteria for health examination of high-risk occupational groups and application to female fishers: Delphi study.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to establish criteria for designing health examination programs and selecting appropriate examination items for high-risk occupational groups and to apply these criteria specifically to female fishers. METHODS: The first Delphi survey comprised five domains and 15 specific criteria for identifying relevant health screening items for high-risk occupations. The second survey included open-ended questions addressing inconsistencies identified in the first survey and sought suggestions for additional items. In the third Delphi survey, specific health sc

Born to clean? Caste, occupation and health - an exploration among sanitation workers in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu, India.

BACKGROUND: Sanitation work in India remains concentrated among the Scheduled Castes despite constitutional protections and modernisation. Although this concentration is widely recognised, it has not been systematically incorporated into empirical analyses examining the mechanisms through which caste operates. This paper also describes the development of variables that aim to go beyond mainstream descriptive variables. It specifically examines the association between intergenerational occupational continuity and mental health outcomes (depression, anxiety, and stress) among sanitation workers.

Home-based telework and worker health and well-being across service occupations: A critical interpretive synthesis.

The rapid expansion of home-based telework since COVID-19 has diversified the remote workforce to include service occupations centered on real-time interaction with patients, clients, and customers. Yet the literature on telework and health remains largely oriented toward the experiences of knowledge workers, obscuring how home-based telework shapes the health and well-being of interaction-intensive service workers. We conducted a Critical Interpretive Synthesis of 69 peer-reviewed studies (2000 to 2025) to develop a theoretical account of how home-based telework is experienced across service
