[Treatment of irreducible Gartland typeIII humerus supracondylar fracture in children with limited open reduction and percutaneous K-wire internal fixation].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical outcomes of limited open reduction and percutaneous K-wire internal fixation for the treatment of irreducible Gartland type III humerus supracondylar fracture in children. METHODS: From May 2006 to October 2014, 132 patients with irreducible Gartland type III humerus supracondylar fracture were treated with reduction and percutaneous K-wire internal fixation. The reduction was performed with the guiding of surgeon's finger, and the lateral approach with periosteum torn was chosen according to the shift direction of the distal fractures. Among them, there

Successful open reduction and internal fixation for displaced femoral fracture in a patient with osteopetrosis: Case report and lessons learned.

RATIONALE: Osteopetrosis is a rare disease that predominantly occurs in descendants of inbreeding families. In the case of fractures happen in patients with osteopetrosis, the choice between operative or conservative treatment is still controversial. Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) is a conventional treatment for fractures, and it possesses more applicability than conservative treatment. During this surgical treatment, ensure that bone union in the right way is pivotal to success and simultaneously prevents refracture and displacement after the operation. Herein, we present a case

Occult internal iliac arterial injury identified during open reduction internal fixation of an acetabular fracture: a report of two cases.

We present two cases of occult internal iliac arterial injury identified during operative reduction of a widely displaced posterior column posterior wall acetabular fracture. This complication was not recognised until reduction of the column fracture. There were no preoperative signs or symptoms indicative of a vascular injury. These cases emphasise the heightened awareness one must have when treating widely displaced posterior column fractures of the acetabulum, especially those fractures with extension into the greater sciatic notch, as previously formed clot can become dislodged and hemosta

Open reduction and internal fixation alone versus open reduction and internal fixation plus total hip arthroplasty for displaced acetabular fractures in patients older than 60 years: A prospective clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: The optimal treatment of elderly patients with an acetabular fracture is unknown. We conducted a prospective clinical trial to compare functional outcomes and reoperation rates in patients older than 60 years with acetabular fracture treated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) alone versus ORIF plus concomitant total hip arthroplasty (ORIF + THA). Our hypothesis was that patients who had ORIF + THA would have better patient reported outcomes and lower reoperation rates postoperatively. METHODS: Inclusion criteria were patients older than 60 years with acetabular fra

Prospective randomized trial comparing open reduction and internal fixation with minimally invasive reduction and percutaneous fixation in managing displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures.

PURPOSE: Managing displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures remains controversial. A prospective randomised trial was undertaken to compare open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with minimally invasive reduction and percutaneous fixation (MIRPF). METHODS: Forty-five displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures were randomised to undergo either ORIF (n = 23) or MIRPF (n = 22). Patients were followed up clinically and radiologically for a minimum of one year postoperatively. The primary outcome measure was wound-healing complication. Functional outcome was assessed using Creighton Ne

Spontaneous reduction of a chronic radial head subluxation after open reduction and percutaneous pin fixation of a radial neck fracture: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the radial neck in children have shown to account for 5-10% of traumatic elbow injuries in the pediatric population. Chronic dislocation of the radial head with concomitant fracture has been shown to result in progressive deformity and unacceptable loss of motion. METHODS: In this case report, we describe a patient who sustained a type 2 radial neck fracture with 100% displacement. The patient's clinical and surgical management will be discussed and a review of the literature is provided as it relates to this particular case. RESULTS: The patient underwent open reduc

Comparison between closed reduction with percutaneous pinning and open reduction with pinning in children with closed totally displaced supracondylar humeral fractures: a randomized controlled trial.

This was a randomized controlled trial of 28 children 1 year to 12 years of age with closed totally displaced supracondylar humeral fracture. The purpose of the study was to compare closed reduction and pinning (group A) and open reduction and pinning (group B). Each group consisted of 14 children. The general characteristics of both groups (age, sex side, displacement, nerve injury preoperatively) were statistically the same (P > 0.05). All cases healed with good alignment without cubitus varus, without infection and with a good range of motion except for one. The mean +/- standard deviation

Comparison of outcomes of open reduction and internal fixation versus closed reduction and percutaneous pinning in Song type 4-5 pediatric lateral condyle fractures.

BACKGROUND: Lateral condyle fractures are the second most common peri-elbow fractures in children aged 6-10 years, following supracondylar fractures. In treating these fractures, either open or closed reduction fixation can be performed. However, it is not yet completely clear which type of fracture should be treated and how. The Song classification has been increasingly used by orthopedic surgeons for these fractures in recent years. A review of the literature reveals few studies comparing closed reduction and percutaneous pinning (CRPP) and open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) in late

Closed Reduction Techniques Are Associated With Fewer Complications Than Open Reductions in Treating Moderately Displaced Pediatric Lateral Humeral Condyle Fractures: A Multicenter Study.

INTRODUCTION: Lateral humeral condyle (LC) fractures are the second most common pediatric elbow fractures. Traditionally, displaced fractures have been treated with open reduction although recent studies have demonstrated successful outcomes of closed reduction for similar injuries. This study investigates the outcomes comparing open and closed reduction in a large cohort of children with moderately displaced (Song classification types 1 to 4) lateral humeral condyle fractures. METHODS: Retrospective data from patients aged between 1 and 12 years treated for lateral condyle fractures was coll

Closed Reduction Percutaneous Pinning Versus Open Reduction With Plate and Screw Fixation in Management of Unstable Proximal Phalangeal Fractures: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Proximal phalanx fractures are common, with surgical fixation indicated for unstable fractures. Traditionally, closed reduction percutaneous pinning (CRPP) resulted in decreased stiffness and tendon irritation compared to open reduction internal fixation (ORIF). We hypothesized that more recent studies would have more similar outcomes to CRPP. The purpose of this study was to compare CRPP and ORIF in terms of range of motion, Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) scores, and complications. METHODS: Four electronic databases were queried from 2010 to present. Following

Early complications of surgically managed ankle fractures related to the AO classification.A review of 118 ankle fractures treated with open reduction and internal fixation.

The charts of 118 consecutive ankle fractures were reviewed. The patients' age, sex, energy of trauma, hospital stay, need for traction therapy, syndesmosis fixation and soft-tissue problems were related to the various types of fractures according to the AO classification. An interobserver check study revealed an agreement of 0.61 (kappa), which is considered good. The age of the patients with A-fractures was 33 years (SD +/- 13), B-fractures 56 years (SD +/- 18), and C-fractures 48 years (SD +/- 16). The age differences within these groups were highly significant (P < 0.005). The highest aver
