Morning glory disc anomaly (MGDA) is most commonly found in white females in childhood with reduced vision. One in two cases have been reported to develop maculopathy or posterior pole retinal detachment as they grow older. PURPOSE: To investigate the association between visual function and ultrastructural characteristics of the retina and optic disc in children operated for cataract and factors influencing this relationship.

Ascending optic atrophy was produced in 13 eyes of owl monkeys (Aotestrivirgatus) by retinal photocoagulation. Color fundus photography and fluorescein angiography were used to study and document the evolution of nerve head abnormalities. The optic nerve heads were also studied histopathologically. Employing retinal explants and retrograde transport techniques, we studied the formation of the arcuate fascicles by examining the growth of the central retina, the emergence of the adult fiber layer pattern, and the projections of retinal ganglion cells in the central and peripheral retina. PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of optic disc drusen and their associations with ocular and general parameters.
METHODS: The Beijing Eye Study included 4439 of 5324 subjects invited to participate (response rate 83.4%). All subjects were aged > or = 40 years. The present investigation involved 8594 (96.8%) eyes of 4324 (97.4%) subjects from whom readable fundus photographs of at least one eye were available. The main outcome parameter was the presence of optic disc drusen defined as round, whitish bodies.
RESULTS: Optic disc drusen were detected in nine (0.1 +/- 0.05%)
