Preclinical MRI Using Hyperpolarized 129Xe.

Although critical for development of novel therapies, understanding altered lung function in disease models is challenging because the transport and diffusion of gases over short distances, on which proper function relies, is not readily visualized. In this review we summarize progress introducing hyperpolarized 129Xe imaging as a method to follow these processes in vivo. The work is organized in sections highlighting methods to observe the gas replacement effects of breathing (Gas Dynamics during the Breathing Cycle) and gas diffusion throughout the parenchymal airspaces (3). We then describe

Hydrogen Bonding-Induced Morphology Dependence of Long-Lived Organic Room-Temperature Phosphorescence: A Computational Study.

Organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) is generally only exhibited in aggregate with strong dependence on morphology, which is highly sensitive to the intermolecular hydrogen bonding interaction. Here, 4,4'-bis(9H-carbazol-9-yl)methanone (Cz2BP), emitting RTP in a cocrystal consisting of chloroform but not in the amorphous nor in the crystal phase, was investigated to disclose the morphology dependence through molecular dynamics simulations and first-principles calculations. We find that the strong intermolecular C═O···H-C hydrogen bonds between Cz2BP and chloroform in cocrystals decre

Utility of three-dimensional computed tomography in general thoracic surgery.

It is important for general thoracic surgeons to understand the relationship between tumors and surrounding organs during surgery; however, many anatomical variations are possible in the thorax, which can complicate this goal. Multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) is the latest technical breakthrough in CT imaging. MDCT permits rapid scanning of large areas of the body with multiple detectors, thereby allowing for simultaneous acquisition of an increased number of transaxial CT slices, which reduce motion artifacts. Three-dimensional (3D) rendering involves the creation of two-dimensional i

Periodic breathing and O2 saturation in relation to sleep stages at high altitude.

This study was designed to compare sleep organization at high altitude (HA) and sea level (SL) and to estimate the extent periodic breathing (PB) negatively influences arterial O2 saturation (SaO2). Six lowlanders were studied at SL and after 3 weeks spent at 3,800 m (La Paz, Bolivia). Three EEG leads, EOG, submental EMG, chest and abdominal motion, temperature of ventilated gas, and SaO2 were polygraphically recorded. Comparison of HA and SL data disclosed that: 1) Sleep organization was identical, with the same percentage of REM and stage 4. 2) PB (cycle length: 20 s; central apnea: 9 s) occ

Suspected myocarditis resulting from leptospirosis: A case report from Iran.

Leptospirosis is a potentially fatal disease that can lead to dysfunction across multiple organ systems. Although cardiovascular complications are relatively rare, they are frequently underestimated and may result in severe outcomes if not addressed promptly. A 46-year-old farmer presented with complaints of palpitations and chest pain. He reported a history of fever, chills, rigors, diaphoresis, myalgia, nausea, low back pain, and headaches that began 7 days prior. An electrocardiogram showed diffuse T-wave inversions and sinus tachycardia; a troponin test was positive, indicating myocardial

Myositis ossificans causing ulnar neuropathy: a case report.

Myositis ossificans (MO) can compress peripheral nerves and cause neuropathy. We herein describe a patient with ulnar neuropathy caused by MO at the medial elbow. A 28-year-old man with a drowsy mentality and multiple organ damage following a traffic accident was admitted to our hospital. After 3 weeks of postoperative care, the patient's mental status recovered. However, he complained of severe sharp pain in his left medial forearm and fourth and fifth fingers. He exhibited weak fifth finger abduction and wrist adduction. Severe elbow joint pain was elicited during range-of-motion testing of

The Right Ventricle-You May Forget it, but It Will Not Forget You.

Right ventricular (RV) dysfunction and failure are common and often overlooked causes of perioperative deterioration and adverse outcomes. Due to its unique pathophysiologic underpinnings, RV failure often does not respond to typical therapeutic measures such as volume resuscitation and often worsens when therapy is escalated and mechanical ventilation is begun, with a danger of irreversible cardiovascular collapse and death. The single most important factor in improving outcomes in the context of RV failure is anticipating and recognizing it. Once established, a vicious circle of systemic hyp

Development of a 4D numerical chest phantom with customizable breathing.

Respiratory movement information is useful for radiation therapy, and is generally obtained using 4D scanners (4DCT). In the interest of patient safety, reducing the use of 4DCT could be a significant step in reducing radiation exposure, the effects of which are not well documented. The authors propose a customized 4D numerical phantom representing the organ contours. Firstly, breathing movement can be simulated and customized according to the patient's anthroporadiametric data. Using learning sets constituted by 4D scanners, artificial neural networks can be trained to interpolate the lung co

A mathematical description of blood spiral flow in vessels: application to a numerical study of flow in arterial bending.

Local arterial haemodynamics has been associated with the pathophysiology of several cardiovascular diseases. The stable spiral blood-flows that were observed in vivo in several vessels, may play a dual role in vascular haemodynamics, beneficial since it induces stability, reducing turbulence in the arterial tree, and accounts for normal organ perfusion, but detrimental in view of the imparted tangential velocities that are involved in plaque formation and development. Being a spiral flow considered representative of the local blood dynamics in certain vessels, a method is proposed to quantify

Hydrops-induced changes in cochlear blood flow.

Laser Doppler flowmetry was used to assess cochlear blood flow (CBF) in the hydropic ear in four experiments. 1) The increase in CBF elicited by local electrical stimulation of the cochlea in the hydropic ear was compared to that observed in normal controls. The magnitude of the evoked CBF change was reduced by approximately 30% in the hydropic ear compared to the normal ear. 2) The reduction in CBF evoked by direct electrical stimulation of the superior cervical ganglion was reduced by approximately one third in the hydropic ear compared to a normal ear. 3) Rhythmic (flux motion or vasomotion

Echocardiographic evaluation of patients with clinically suspected arterial emboli.

153 patients (mean age 42 years, range 16-60) who had arterial embolic events were examined prospectively by transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography. Patients older than 60 years and those with evidence of extracranial carotid artery occlusive disease were excluded. 84 patients had a cerebral ischaemic event, 50 patients had embolic events in an abdominal organ or limb, and 19 patients had acute retinal ischaemia. The transthoracic echocardiographic examination was normal in 92 patients (60%), whereas only 65 patients (42%) had normal findings after both transthoracic and transoeso

The Role of MRI-Guided Radiotherapy for Soft Tissue Sarcomas.

Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are a rare class of tumors that originate from mesenchymal tissues and occur most frequently in the extremities, trunk, and retroperitoneum. Surgical resection with R0 margins is the primary curative treatment for most localized STS. In this setting, radiation therapy is used either pre-operatively or post-operatively to reduce the rate of local recurrence. Modern pre- or post-operative radiation therapy rely on the use of MRI sequences to guide target delineation during treatment planning. MRI-guided radiotherapy also offers unique advantages over CT-guided approach

Recovery of cardiac function after living-donor lung transplantation in a patient with primary pulmonary hypertension.

Legislation for brain death and organ transplantation was passed in Japan in 1997, but there is still a great shortage of brain-death donors. Primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH) is a progressive disease that is usually followed by death within 5 years of diagnosis. Continuous infusion of prostacyclin is effective, but some patients will ultimately require heart-lung or lung transplantation. The first case of bilateral living-donor lobar lung transplantation (LDLLT) for PPH in Japan is reported. The recipient was a 19-year-old woman who was diagnosed as PPH at the age of 14 years and began int

STAR in a Second: Ultra-High-Dose-Rate Spread-Out Bragg Peak Proton Therapy for Breath-Hold Stereotactic Arrhythmia Radioablation.

PURPOSE: Stereotactic arrhythmia radioablation (STAR) is a noninvasive treatment option for managing ventricular tachycardia (VT). Combined respiratory and cardiac motion requires management with large target volume margins or motion mitigation techniques. Techniques such as beam gating and breath-holds are limited by low-duty cycles, extending treatment times. We investigate the feasibility of ultra-high-dose-rate (UHDR) proton therapy using a spread-out Bragg peak technique with a conformal energy modulator to achieve respiratory and cardiac motion management within a single breath-hold deli

The CAM-P-OS study protocol: a prospective randomized multicenter trial evaluating an active controlled motion device in the rehabilitation of surgically treated, isolated ankle fractures of Weber types B and C.

BACKGROUND: Displaced ankle fractures classified as Weber types B and C are common across all age groups. The standard treatment involves open reduction and internal fixation, followed by a rehabilitation program that includes 6 weeks of partial weightbearing. During this period, both passive and active range-of-motion exercises are performed under the supervision of a physiotherapist. Recently, a new device has become available, allowing active controlled motion of the ankle joint at home on top of the normal rehabilitation protocol. The purpose of this controlled randomized trial was to eval

Failure modes and effects analysis of LINAC-based stereotactic arrhythmia radioablation categorized by segmental targets.

BACKGROUND: Stereotactic arrhythmia radioablation (STAR) is an emerging treatment for refractory or recurrent arrhythmias. Compared with conventional stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), STAR involves greater complexity in target delineation, motion management, and organs at risk (OARs) protection, yet it lacks established consensus clinical guidelines, and workflow-specific risk analyses remain limited. OBJECTIVE: To develop a C-arm linear accelerator (LINAC)-based STAR workflow and perform a failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA) with fault tree analysis (FTA), supplemented by an explo

The development of a population of 4D pediatric XCAT phantoms for imaging research and optimization.

PURPOSE: We previously developed a set of highly detailed 4D reference pediatric extended cardiac-torso (XCAT) phantoms at ages of newborn, 1, 5, 10, and 15 yr with organ and tissue masses matched to ICRP Publication 89 values. In this work, we extended this reference set to a series of 64 pediatric phantoms of varying age and height and body mass percentiles representative of the public at large. The models will provide a library of pediatric phantoms for optimizing pediatric imaging protocols. METHODS: High resolution positron emission tomography-computed tomography data obtained from the D

A collaborative creation framework for experimental animation pedagogy integrating generative artificial intelligence and vibe coding.

The growing use of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) in art and design has accelerated image and video automation. In this landscape, preserving media experimentation, authorial judgment, and generative unpredictability has emerged as a critical focus in experimental animation education. While existing studies mainly focus on production efficiency, limited attention has been paid to how GAI supports concept development, motion translation, media organization, and creative decision-making in classroom practice. Addressing this gap through design-based research (DBR), this study introduce

A Microstructural Investigation of Disc Disruption Induced by Low Frequency Cyclic Loading.

STUDY DESIGN: Microstructural investigation of low frequency cyclic loading and flexing of the lumbar disc. OBJECTIVE: To explore micro-level structural damage in motion segments subjected to low frequency repetitive loading and flexing at sub-acute loads. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Cumulative exposure to mechanical load has been implicated in low back pain and injury. The mechanical pathways by which cyclic loading physically affects spine tissues remain unclear, in part due to the absence of high quality microstructural evidence. METHODS: The study utilized seven intact ovine lumbar spin
